[/quote] I'd be surprised if it is genuine Fender, especially given the era in which he says he bought it (Fender made quite a fuss after all of their recemnt decision to sell original necks and bodies, I always get the impression that previous parts were 'licensed by' as opposed to 'made by'). I may of course be wrong, Wateroftyne is probably the man to confirm ..... And yes, one ugly bass for sure. Might sound awesome, might be a total plank, but always gonna be ugly

    Aw, the perfect Christmas present, all blue and sparkly, would look so great under my Christmas tree. Despite being a Precision man through and through, if i were a pro this would be my bass of choice. Amazing playability and amazing tone, put a set of flats on and you have the most incredible funky retro groove tones through to incredible slap and rock grind. Perfect

[/quote] Kinda prefer chunky necks John I've not played a Sterling, I am interested in whether it's substantially different to a Ray. I owned a Ray 4 and Ray 5 at the same time a few years back and was surprised (in fact dismayed) at how different the 5 was to the 'true' (IMO) sound of a Stingray. Wondering how the Sterling sits in relation to those two really?

    IME flats get better with age almost indefinitely, most rounds get better for a while and then just start to intonate badly

    That would be mu dream bass if it's a Precision neck, which I don't think it is. I reckon it'll go for £400 to be honest, good basses are selling low at the moment so that rather mongrel, fugly and abused thing will struggle. At £400 I would take it though

    I didn't clean this bass before I photographed it so it doesn't look at its best in the first post and the pics in the post above are from the original eBay listing, clearly not cleaned there either! It is however in extremely good condition that I guess could be described as almost mint. In short, it's a truly stunning example, which is in part the reason I'm moving it on, it's unlikely to stay in such good condition with two young daughters who treat Daddy's studio as their stomping ground. Given there are other similar examples of 70's maple fretless Precisions on sale elsewhere for between £1600 and £1900, and considering their relative rarity and collectibility, this is a good opportunity to buy an investment instrument at a price that you're unlikely to find anywhere else (and of course it will be sold with original receipts including serial number). I got very lucky when I bought this bass on eBay, so I'm very happy to pass that luck on to another BCer. If it goes back to eBay I won't be so charitable I've had lots of trade offers. Many thanks but I really do not want any fretted basses. I am interested in a cheaper fretless, ideally a Fender or MM, plus cash. I'd also consider a straight trade for a fretless Ric. I'm also always interested in high quality amplification for DB and other acoustic instruments (guitar, mandolin). My preference however is for a cash sale. C

    That is still lovely! How does a fretless Sterling sound in comparison with a fretless 'Ray?

    Quite keen to trade this for a less expensive fretless with cash my way, in fact I quite fancy an Ibanez Musician at present, although an MIJ '62 RI Jazz would also do the job. C

    This is sitting at our guitarist's house in Cobham, Surrey. I can't be a***d to go and get it and the chances of him bringing it back up here in the foreseeable future are slim! I'll take £250 collected from Cobham for it. This is a serious bargain.

[/quote] Yep, like my current Precision (probably my longest tenure with a bass), a £300 MIJ that, for me, beats all my other Precisions hands down, and that includes many from the 70's and a few from the 60's that cost substantially more. Nearly every bass for which I've has GAS has disappointed me eventually

Problem I found - as did Clarky above - is that AI doesn't have the grunt for nice clean DB tone in a noisy room (and I had a combo and extension cab also). I found exactly the same problem with PJB rigs.

[/quote] I've two wedge monitors that I stack vertically and with a good pre-amp they can do a decent job of amplifying DB, plus you get the sound off the floor. Downside is a relatively heavy and unstable rig situated next to a relatively breakable instrument. Throw in the inevitable blend of beer, punters, other musicians and a drummer.....
