1. Picked up in a trade with Greg (Shaggy) a while back but not going to be needed. Please see details/pics in the original thread. 2. Nicely put together by, I believe Rasta, and recently acquired from Telebass, it's a lovely high spec bass that's going to fund a fretless Precision (and to keep the highly repetitive cycle of Fender basses in and out of Beedster Towers going). Link to original sale and details here http://basschat.co.u...__fromsearch__1 The neck is, as Rasta says, absolutely outstanding, seriously. Vintage tweed Fender case included. Price unchanged at £350 Trade-wise all I'm interested in is a Fretless Precision or something very similar (i.e., not a Jazz) C
3. Thanks mate, yep the VT is probably going to be the first choice, I quite like the idea of having the programmable version at my feet anyway. What do you reckon to the tone difference from the VT to the Ampeg pre going through the tube power amp?
4. Folks I'm hoping to rejoin the ranks of the gigging bass fraternity soon. I have recently acquired a lovely Ampeg 300w all tube power amp and what should be an equally lovely Ampeg tube pre, but the pre is playing up a lot and will need some technical work done, not great when you live in the stix. However, it got me to thinking about other options, and two I'm considering are a Tech 21 VT box or even an East P-Retro, both going straight into the power amp. Any thoughts? C
5. Ha ha, someone get on to the media quick; Beedster and Clarky in no transaction shock Yep, a beer would be nice mate, bring the A/E just in case though! I'll be in touch with dates, although I'm aware it's a bit of a busy summer for Clarke et al. C
6. B******s, guess the A/E is off the market now......
7.
Rewind! It is a Jazz ('A') width. I measured it at 1.5" at the nut. Which may rule it out for you Chris
Thanks mate, that's a shame, I was hoping after the post yesterday that it was a wide but flat'un like my 62 RI. However, like all things Fender, it doesn't rule it out, I've played some Jazz/A necks I've loved and some Precision B/C necks I've hated (and to be honest I tend to find width less of an issue on fretless for some reason). I hope to be in town sometime over the next couple of weeks so if it's still for sale by then perhaps we'll hook up - ideally in an evening and over a beer because despite the fact that we must have done about 10 face to face deal, the average time has been about 5 mins - and I'll give it a play.
8.
Botttom line: I would willingly swap my day job to play for Mumford & Sons.
Likewise. With your DB CV you'd probably get the gig as well Clarky
9. Re the neck, yes, Jazz width doesn't appeal, is the neck standard Fender 4-bolt Clarky?
10. M&S are a very very good live act, in fact one of the best I've seen. There's an energy and, well honesty, about them that is really unique. I don't like either of their albums because, having seen them live and having heard the early sessions they did for the BBC, the albums are to my ear overproduced and a little flat. They certainly don't come close to the band live. Last night I think they had outstanding energy but they didn't seem as on form as they did when I first saw them, perhaps due to recent events. I also don't think their 'flat 4' formation on stage work for TV. But all that aside, they were still one of the best acts I saw at Glasto this year. I'm sure many on here are jealous, and rightly so, I'd love to be in that band. I guess some of the jealousy is around the idea that what M&S have done has relied to a great part on being in the right place at the right time, a lot of BBC/luvvy-type fanboyism, and the lack of anything else that good in that bracket (Bellowhead included). But they do write a good tune, albeit a formulaic one, and they do play them well. Also their 'Coldplay for the new acoustic generation' vibe is very inclusive, and they've certainly revived interest among young players in acoustic instruments (including DB). I'm a massive Stones fan, but having seen their set Saturday, I know which of the two i'd have wanted to see live this weekend.
11.
Chris I thought you declared this bass fugly!!!!! In answer to your question, its not the original Lace Sensor but appears to be a DiMarzio P pickup and sounds like a good thumping P should. I recommend you drop a PM to Gareth (walbassist) who had it on trial and played it extensively before deciding he preferred his Veillette - he will give you an honest appraisal
It is fugly, but if I was into aesthetics, would I play Precisions? I have a lovely Jazz that I doubt I'll ever gig, a nice SWR head, and an interesting combo to sell. I reckon if sold, collectively they'd allow me to buy it mate, and although I don't like the looks at all, to be honest it's a Fender Precision model I haven't owned, and you know me
12. How close is the P-PUP solo'd to a 'proper' Precision mate?
13.
.....somebody deserves this as a centrepiece of their collection
Yep, me
14.
I think most people are too sexy for that shirt ...
It is a classic shirt Jack
15.
Erm, actually I live in Barnes, Chris. So that would be a no
OK, what if I walk up the road a little to, say Roehampton? At another time I'd have been all over this bass as - as people seem to be slowly waking up to, a fretless Precision is an absolutely magnificent instrument in every respect. The iconography of the Jaco/Jazz thing has dominated people's thinking around fretless instruments to such a degree that many see a fretless Precision as some sort of poorer substitute, which to my mind is exactly the opposite of the case. There is an authority and power to the tone that I've never found in other fretless instruments (possible exception being my ex 4003FL), and a decent fretless Precision will certainly blow most fretless Jazzes out of the water in those respects. Also - perhaps counter-intuitively - if you want DB tone, it's there in spades. Personally Clarky I think you should keep it until such time as my daughters can earn their own keep and I can justify a decent fretless again
16.
Would entertain offers close to the asking price
So you're in Hammersmith asking £2000 Clarky, how about I offer you £50 from Barnes, it's close
17.
"Sexy and I know it"
Ha ha, I thought that was an oblique reference to Jack playing it in the pic above and a certain mid-90's English band. Then the photo of the bass popped up
18. Not that he needs any more positive feedback but once again Clarky has gone out of his way to get some bass gear to me. A top guy in every respect, and like a fine wine, getting even better with age
19.
Sorry to read that tale of woe Chris, hopefully this will sell to a BCer and all will be well !
Ha ha, thanks John, on reflection all ended well with only a few quid lost (well, about £80 with fees and postage), but could have been far worse.
20. Bought a Badass from Paul and it arrived very quickly with great comms all the way, a refreshing experience following recent eBay woes. Paul's a nice guy to deal with Chris
21. I've a TI low B (and high C) not being used if you need it C
