This might just cut it - the Rigel Acousta Bass ... if you have a spare $2200 plus shipping and tax
I saw that pic and every cell in my body screamed 'get a bloody double bass woman'
Compared to a 400+ most stuff is lightweight, even Fender Bassman, aside from the massive one.
There's a guy in one of the TB threads above who says that his 400+ is his lightest head!
I must admit there have been a couple of occasions when one guy turns up with his cajon. That has such a deep, warm tone that it cancels out the DB completely if we hit our instruments at the same time.
Which perhaps sounds to the punters like a pleasing synergy of rhythm and tone, the only problem being whether you can hear yourself sufficiently well to intonate the note correctly in the first place
I don't think I would agree with that. Our session has fiddles and banjos and flutes and whistles and guitars and accordions and the DB comes through very well. I'm told it can be heard in the bar across the hallway quite clearly. Maybe that's why I get all achy when I'm playing it.
Fair point and I agree it can happen. However, in a crowded bar, difficult acoustic or amongst certain instruments (which is why I mentioned congas) even the biggest sounding DB can get lost. Yes, I've played gigs unplugged where people at the back - including famously the sound guy who had managed to mess up our mix so badly through the PA that we gave up and went acoustic/backline - have said that the DB really cuts through and projects, but this is not something I can predict in advance of each individual gig, and I therefore can't rely on this happening. I can (generally) rely on my amp in any setting
BUT - if the double bass is audible as part of the band, without being amplified, why should an acoustic with nice, bright-sounding phosphor bronze strings be less audible? (Real question, as I don't play in a band.)
How about because it's five/six times the size? And even DB struggles against more than one instrument, especially guitars with nice bright sounding strings! Add even calmly played congas to the mix and you're pretty much gone....

A lot of the guys in that second thread seem to suggest that the M-Pulse 600 is a lot cleaner than the Walkabout. To be honest that wasn't my experience, I found that the M-Pulse had very little over the Walkabout apart from greater size and a more fiddly EQ section. That is, it wasn't hugely louder and - all things EQ-wise being equal - the sound seemed much the same as the Walkabout through the same cabs. However, there seems to be some consensus on TB so if clean and warm is your thing the M-Pulse might be worth a try over the Walkabout, and there's a couple for sale very cheap at present as well. Only downside of course is that it's still quite big and heavy, not 400+ big and heavy for sure, but neither is is Walkabout light.

I always found that the Walkabout get grunty quite quickly, so whilst it produces a lovely tone, at higher volumes it's not got the clean tubey sound that the 400+ has when you push it (I think that's what Gary was referring to above). I guess it lacks authority compared to the 400+. OK, 'lacks' is a strong word to use in relation to the Walkabout, perhaps better to say that the 400+ is one of the few amps I'd rate above it. The Walkabout is an outstanding amp, and likely ticks more boxes in relation to the problem above than most other amps, and in a smaller and very user-friendly package. I guess the only way to find out if it does the job is to give it a go.....

Thought I'd give this a good run with my electric basses this evening to provide some more info for John, and on that basis - and given nobody seems that interested at the moment - it's staying here. The cabs are actually outstanding, I ran both the AI head and a Mesa Walkabout head through them and, after a little fiddling about, was blown away. Guess I'd never really fully road tested this combo on electric bass before, and I although I need the money, I don't need it that much!

I'd agree to a point with Michael, but only to a point. I've a Walkabout and I love it, but it simply doesn't do to a bass note what the 400+ does, neither do any of the other Mesa amps I've owned. The 400+ is a PITA to get a tone from compared to the Walkabout for sure (the semi-para on the Wlakabout is lovely), it weighs a ton, is expensive to re-valve, and in a shockmount case is the same size as a small cab, but it has something special. The Walkabout is a very very very good amp (I've got three amps and the 400+ and the Walkabout are two of them), but I don't think it's in quite the same league.
If neither of the above guys take it I certainly will, coming through your neck of the woods at the weekend? Chris
Hi Callum, looks like my planned trip this weekend is off I'm afraid, I'd sure there'll be plenty of other takers. Chris

Thanks Clarky, commission on its way! It's an interesting rig John, it's excellent for DB, equally good for acoustic guitar, and even better for mandolin (which I'm playing more and more these days). In fact it seems to reproduce all acoustic instruments very well indeed. With electric bass it will depend entirely what it is you want out of it. I play my fretless 4003 through it for a DB-like tone and it's perfect. It's also very good for Macca style thump and, within reason, a lot of other clean tones ranging from slap through to Motown/Stax. It doesn't do driven tones well or clanky rock or hard funk, but of course these and almost everything else are available if you stick the right box in front of it. My only reservation with electric bass is that I'm sure I can hear very slight overtones that I don't hear with any other instrument. This might of course be that it's reproducing the output more reliably than other amps, or it might have something to do with the input impedance, who knows. My only point of reference for a small rig designed for acoustic as well as electric instruments is my old PJB Super Flightcase combo rated at 300w, and I can say with my hand on my heart that the Acoustic Image rig is infinitely better, both in terms of bass response which is far more organic, and power, projection and 'hearability' on stage (by this I mean that not only do I hear myself better but so do the rest of the band, including the drummer!). Well, I've talked myself out of selling it now! In all seriousness I really don't want to sell it, but I really want to try and work with my Walkabout head and a lightweight 2x10 for both DB and electric bass for a while, and I'm at a point in life's trajectory at which I seem to have less money than I have things i need to spend it on! I suspect however that, as has happened before, I will miss the AI and it or something very like it will find its way back into my music room! Chris
Grrrr! I just want to find a drummer who owns his own kit, has a car, is quiet and has a good sense of place in a band. Is it really that hard?
Yes

And some very nice Abbey Road preamps!
Not for the first time. Mate, I owe you one C
Um this, again Clarky, many many thanks mate, you're a true gent and it's hugely appreciated C

Crikey, this has sat around the forum for about a month pretty much unnoticed and today I receive seven PMs on it! Clarky, Len and Karl, many thanks for your help above. First dibs have been offered to the first guy to PM me this morning but I'll get back to y'all if he doesn't take it. Cheers Chris
