You coming back to Kent Chris?
Hey mate, sorry, missed your post (notifications are a little, well, less than optimal at present). Yes, back in late January. Can't wait. When I left you were a single bass player. I'm returning to you as a married man and aTour de France contender! We'll have even more to talk about. See you soon mate

Hi folks, pics taken indoors with iPhone below. Note that it's the gain pot on the active unit that's broken. As above, I've used it as it is many times without problem. Another house move victim! It's one of these in black and it pretty much as new condition http://www.lookat.co...CFQkEwwodjUQAyQ Will need to be collected from either mid Wales or Canterbury. It can be taken apart (I can do that) but I don't want the hassle of packing and posting, it's just a little too big.
What PJB rig you getting ?
M-500 plus 6x5 plus 9x5 cabs. Something of a change in direction, but also a rig that I hope I can use for electric bass, DB, acoustic guitar and Mandolin (whilst the Ampeg is very very very good at the first of these, it ain't quite so good at the rest). I was hoping to keep both rigs but suspect that space and money are both going to become issues in the new place
oh those ampeg heads are nice! andy
Thanks mate, they are indeed. This rig, a Precision and a cable, it's all you should need really!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HEAD NOW SOLD, CAB STILL AVAILABLE AT BARGAIN £150 COLLECTED FROM CANTERBURY OR ABERYSTWYTH ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FS a lovely US made and classic bass rig. It actually hurts to sell this one as it's the rig I've always wanted on stage for electric gigs. The real deal in that it's an authentic all-tube tone, versatile enough to work in a number of genres, and small enough to do small gigs yet still get those tones (something that hasn't been the case with several other all tube rigs I've owned). I've owned Ampeg SVTs, Boogie Bass 400+/Buster etc, and all of them were simply too large, too heavy and too loud for the sort of gigs I do, that is, not generally big stages or festivals (when I say to loud, I mean that there's no point gigging with gain at 2 and master at 1). I tried a lot of hybrid heads (e.g., Boogie Walkabout/M-Pulse, Markbass R500) in an attempt to get tube tones at more manageable size and volume, but they never really did it for me one way or another, to my ear they simply had neither the authenticity or the authority that all tube rigs deliver. I did a lot of homework and all the evidence pointed to one of these. So, I set up searches on eBay and checked on BC daily, and all I found were wanted ads for about a year! Jumped on this one when it came up and absolutely love it. It's not small and it's not especially light but it's small enough and light enough. More importantly it does everything I want tone wise, B-15 through to full-on driven classic SVT (I think I'm right in saying that the original VB4s didn't have a gain control, this does, and of course it makes a hell of a lot of difference to what the amp can do). USA made, generally in very good condition, tubes all seem OK, although unlike it's bigger counterparts re-tubing is not going to break the bank anyway. With an impending house move, two very young daughters taking up a lot of my time and money, and incoming multi-instument PJB rig that I'm hoping will cover bass, double bass, guitar and mandolin, I've decided that I'm going to move this on, which is a shame but c'est la via. Will I regret it? Yes. Will I buy another one when the girls are a little older, almost certainly. The PJB is lovely and clean and surprisingly loud, but it'll never be able to do the beautiful things to an electric bass that this baby does. I'm happy to consider selling the two separately, £800 ono for the head and £200 ono for the cab.
One of the great bass lines, and in a song in which it wouldn't be expected. There's a previous thread about it on here somewhere in which the OP described it as being like a Peter, Paul and Mary session with Peter Hook on bass. Not far off!
Just heard this on the radio at a decent volume. What a glorious, glorious bass sound. The above description is however wrong, it's more like an Abba doing a Brotherhood of Man song with Jean-Jacques Burnel on bass and Jon & Vangelis doing the middle sections. Either way, if ever a song makes me regret selling my v63, this is that song

Another item that will need to go in the impending move back to an urban lifestyle. I've used these as intended (i.e., as stage monitors), and - with a Headway EDB-1 - as a vertically stacked DB rig, at which role it didn't do at all badly. I knocked the volume control off the PM-12 but all still works fine, but thought I should let you know. I can post. £60 the pair (postage will be extra). I'll post pics at the weekend when we get some decent light and it stops raining! C
You mean every thread should end on post #84? Fascinating.
#83 Although perhaps someone should audit previous threads to determine whether they do in fact peak in the mid 80's (unlike Clapton)?
Civilisation beckons again ?
Ha ha, indeed it does John, just have to admit that i don't have what it takes to live miles from almost everything! Looking forward to being able to walk to gigs again, bass on my back, head in one had, cab in the other. Hope the Bassman's working out for you mate, all the best for 2014 Chris
Some cheap Squiers are great. So are some Ritters - get over it. Oh and I don't care what you think of the paint job on barefaced cabs and don't have any strong opinions either way on the beatles.
And that's where this thread - and many others - should conclude
I don't have a Squier to compare with but I have listened to a '61P up against a modern Lull P fitted with the same strings and they sounded really different. There's a loose similarity in the core P bass sound but the general tone was quite distinct between the two. Couldn't really say which I preferred (although I'd like to own both!), lol.
You might find that the Squier sounds closer to the '61 than you'd expect. Wouldn't look, feel, smell (or cost) the same mind
My point was that the sound people are usually going for with flats is a sound that came out of simple tech and the quality of cheap gear these days is good enough to get that sound.
I think that to an extent you're right, a modern Squier Precision with flats will sound much the same as a Fender Custom Shop Precision with flats (and dare I say, a pre-CBS with flats). I'm not sure it holds true in all cases though, and I'm also not convinced that the same isn't true with rounds? But on other basses, the differences can be quite profound, and perhaps those differences are a function of the electronics, materials and build quality of more up-market instruments?
This is one fab amp. It's light, versatile and high quality. Sounded great with my double bass and Fender basses, just not quite enough EQ for my BabyBass which needs high mids squashed as it's a singular instrument. Fine price for a superb conbio that works well with most basses (just not my BB!)
Thanks Clarky, happy new year mate. It's actually a very very good amp irrespective of it's size and weight, and sounds gorgeous with all of my basses and both DBs. Whilst you needed a slightly more sensitive EQ, I wish more amps came with such simple yet effective tone controls (the only amp that comes close to it in this respect is the Mesa Walkabout with it's 3-band para). Had I not just bought this http://basschat.co.uk/topic/225523-bargain-phil-jones-pjb-m500-6t-9b-cabs/page__fromsearch__1 it would be staying, and if some of my studio gear sells I may keep it anyway! Cheers Chris -
