1. As an idea of how often they gig, ask yourself "just how many workingmans' clubs are there in the M25 area"
2. I like the specificity of genre, blues funk rock country, gospel, soul, groove Worryingly i think I used to play in this band, and at the time I had a Markbass cab, albeit a 6x10 (this association alone, and not Markbass technology per se, might explain the anti-Markbass sentiment). If it's the same guys - how many guys spell Chris 'Cris' after all - I seriously can't recommend it
3.
Well, I've got a decent Zeller hybrid and my trusty Mo Clifton EUB, complete with flight case .....but I'll have to do some thinking! I did noodle on your bass while it was still with Greg, and it made me smile.......hmmmmm Edit - had a quick think - that could work, PM for discussion!
I'm liking the sound of this more and more Duncan, PM'd
4.
You should have a look a Alan's "Voila" at www.bassix.net . He's right on your doorstep and a lovely fellow who's be making folding/portable EUB's for 40years. I just had a lone of one and was very tempted.Wish I had 3k,Chris!
Thanks Julian, I've no doubt he makes great instruments but I've always found them something of an acquired taste aesthetically
5.
If I sell my Stignray between now and Sunday Chris, I'll make you a serious offer!!
Or a PX........?
6. I'll entertain serious offers between now and Sunday* then it's off to eBay, and I'd put money on it going from there to Holland C * or Clarky will send the boys round
7. [s]I have something of a problem in that I have a new gig that is going to require travel to That London, and quite possibly overseas, and my nly DB is my lovely old German, ex Keith (Mr Bassman) and Greg Cordez. I had hoped to fund the purchase of an EUB or more portable DB though other means, but it ain't going to happen, so with my new found un-sentimental approach to these things, I'm going to offer the Flatback for sale (£3000) or for PX with a portable DB or EUB, ideally up to no more than £1500 so that I can also fund a new but cheaper DB. I might also consider a PX with cash my way for a cheaper DB allowing me to buy an EUB. In short, I need to get rid of the German and come away with a DB and an EUB or similar.[/s] So, the bass. I bought it after a recording session in which the engineer came clean about my old double bass along the lines "You're not going to get the sound you're after with that bass". 6 weeks later and after Greg had very kindly delivered it to Canterbury, I was back in the same studio with a smiling engineer and a completely different recorded sound, very full and rich with - certainly strung with Evah's - a hint of darkness (I'm going to try it with some Silver Slaps this weekend so will report back on that tone). It has an Eb stop, what feels like a long scale (I'll measure when I get home tonight) and a pretty thin neck, which I'd say compares to other DBs in similar fashion to how Fender Jazz necks compare with Precisions, a small difference to the ruler but a significant difference to the player. I can't say whether that makes the neck any 'faster' or 'easier' as - as is the case with all DBs - there are so many other variables. I would guess that if you have small hands, this is probably an advantage. I'm going to wait for some sunshine to take pics Seriously, I'll do my best tonight but will spend some time Saturday getting some done properly. Greg and Keith were both kind enough to send me sound-clips and vids which, with their permission I'll pass on to any interested parties, and of course, tryouts in Canterbury are welcome. I'm in no great rush with this and recognise that it's a lot of money in cash-stripped times, but I'm hoping that the PX option might work for someone here. Chris PS pics later
8. Ha ha, thanks guys, she's a beaut isn't she. Don't be fooled by her looks though, there's something of a brute under that pretty facade I'll reply to PMs this evening Chris PS and Clarky, as discussed previously, it's your ergonomics, not Rics'
9. And I'm flexible on PX, but a decent passive fretless or even an EUB would do it for me at present. C
10. Bought from Stacker a few months back it's a stunning looker and player but hasn't quite managed to replace my hybrid 4003 as 'Number 1 Bass' in the way I thought it would. Having just bought (well, not quite 'bought' as I haven't actually paid him for it yet) my old Faker back from Clarky, I find myself once again in the more basses that I need situation. I'd love to keep it but you know how things are Compared with my 4003 this bass really does feel like an authentically old instrument, in that respect it's quite unlike the Fender Re-issues that IME tend to look old but feel quite new. It also has a lovely chunky neck. possibly the chunkiest I've owned, so if you're looking for a skinny, look away now. Only issue are the two small dinks in the back of the neck (see 5th or 6th pic down). You notice these when you first play but they quickly become part of the feel as opposed to a problem. Having said that, I would probably have had them refinished at some stage were I keeping the bass. And in keeping with tradition, I didn't realise that I hadn't polished the bass until after I'd taken the pics Please excuse the somewhat tired TIs in the pic belo Cheers Chris
11.
Most of my favourite Queen songs are either played on a fretless or his lovely tobacco burst pre EB Ray with the white pick guard.
Had no idea, which tracks are fretless Pete? Loved the recent two-part documentary on BBC that - despite the best efforts of a certain drummer and certain guitarist - demonstrated just how much difference JD made to Queen's sound and success
12.
Paypal refunded me and another guy, but would not refund a third person who had paid using the "gift" option.
Which is why you should only use the Gift or Personal Payment Owed options if you know and trust the other guy. People moan about the 4% Paypal fees but it is, amongst other thing, an insurance fee for when things go wrong (and yes they do pay up occasionally). C
13.
Maybe i should change that signature to 'If it aint seated properly, widen the slot slightly'
I prefer 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it. if it is broke, don't try and fix it yourself unless you're happy for it to be even more broke', which is kinda the story of my life when it comes to most forms of DIY
14.
The transfer is made through the nut, headstock and bridge anchor points regardless of where the note is fretted. If a slot is too tight at the sides it will not allow the 100% downforce needed. Even if it looks right, it isn't right if you are forcing the string in to the slot. It is being gripped by the nut rather than sitting in the slot. Wrap some 240 round the string and work it in. In this case it isn't broke as such but will be broken eventually. Maybe i should change that signature to 'If it aint seated properly, widen the slot slightly'
Thanks, I can see the logic, and i guess that widening the slot to provide the degree of 'room' around the string that's evident with the other strings can't cause a problem. I assume 240 is fine sandpaper or similar? Thanks for your help Chris PS the problem with the notes certainly improves the further up the neck i go, to the point that the presence and sustain above the 12th fret is what i'd consider normal, is that also consistent with the nut being to tight?
15.
You shouldn't have to force it in. You could easily break the corner of the nut off. Go for it yowf.
Potentially worrying advice from a guy with 'If it ain't broke, break it" in his sig My main concern is that the problem is not the nut given that the problem isn't just open string but runs up the entire neck. I'm probably oversimplifying things but I would assume that even if the string is too tightly gripped at the nut, it would only effect the open string tone? C
16.
If the slot is too narrow, the string will not sit right and will affect the resonance.
Thanks, the string appears to sit at the right height but has to be forced in to the slot? Should I widen the slot a little? C
17. If the string sits very tightly in the nut slot would this impact on tone even if the string is fretted? I'm guessing it shouldn't, but on the bass in question the E slot seems to have been cut pretty narrow and all the E strings I've tried sound dead? Thanks C
18. Enough basses have gone back and forth between me and Clarky for the Inland Revenue to suspect some form of circular tax doge. Keep an eye open for the upcoming Jimmy Carr-esque media outrage
19. Clarky, I've had a few folks interested in the v63 so I'm pretty confident I'll have this back off you (and at the price you paid of course). Can you hold for a day or two while I sort out the process? Cheers C
20.
Sorry Chris but i am calling my relationship quits with Ricks. Break to my left hand a couple of years ago (which means I cramp up with narrow necks) has done for me - its Precisions and double basses for me (mainly ...)!
Ha ha, actually I'm happy to keep the v63, but it's testimony to this bass that I'd take it back. It doesn't have quite the finishing or grunt of the Ric, but it's close enough, and to my eye looks a whole lot better
21. Sure you don't want a v63 Clarky...........
22. Mmmm, anyone used this rig with DB, it is tempting?
23. Get the VTC installed, it adds a lot of options and really differentiates between the tone of the neck PUP and the bridge PUP. Go for the switchable circuit (push/pull bridge PUP tone pot) as opposed to the tone cap alone, as if you do the latter and don't like it, you'd have to uninstall. As for recording, I like to send the tone I want in rather than getting it afterwards as it changes how I play, but I might be the exception! Chris
24.
Hiya Chris, how are you?
Well I thought I might get a cheap Jag but now with Louis' help have realised how sad my life is so am going to enter a monastery You?
25. Crikey, what a cock this Louis guy is ......
