Cheers mate, if I had anything else to trade I'd be heading to That London ASAP. The Gherson really has got a great retro tone that I struggle - ironically - to get from the v63 (as we've discussed before, the Riv TVC circuit in the Gherson is far more versatile than that in the v63). Good luck fella, I think it's underpriced though
Miming...The Stranglers rarely took their own kit to TV performances, using whatever they could scrounge.Hence the Jazz, and the aforementioned use of a Rickenbacker on a German TV show.
Yep, I was starting to wonder if the Beeb had a standard 4001 they used for punk bands (like the old Telecaster Bass that always cropped up with prog bands on the OGWT), but they were all different instruments on the Punk show last Friday. And re JJB's Jazz, agreed, you can't draw any real conclusions about what the guys actually played live or in the studio from what they have with them at a TV appearance, especially given that sometimes all the musicians in one entire edition of a programme would be playing the same gear!
JJ = James Jamerson?
That's the obvious solution, although he's not especially well known for his punk repertoire?
Think you`re right there, some of the spark has definitely gone. Watching the bands from then, the singers had their own style of moving on stage, not the mass produced moves that "have to be done" that are the norm now. Plus, yes, some of the musicianship, especially the sounds, were a bit here and there, but, it all sounded so good and exciting, instead of polished and refined. I reckon if todays equipment had been used, punk wouldn`t have been so good, and JJB especially would probably have never found that classic bass sound.
Agree with all of that, especially the 'mass produced moves' bit. Was really refreshing to see Ian Curtis. Richard Jobson et al giving it large without a choreographer - or at least a generic X-Factor style choreographer - in sight. So much of the energy and emotion of music went out with the bathwater in the post-punk 80's and in many genres it's yet to return. There are of course exceptions.
Indeed.I don't recall seeing JJB on the Punk Brittania programmes either, but his name was brought up earlier.
Yeh, he was early on in the second programme (which may have been 'Punk at The BBC' or similar). Not sure what the post above about 'JJ' or his playing a Ric or Jazz is about at all
-
When you say JJB do you mean jean jacques burnel ? Ive seen both of them punk progs but not a sniff of the god of bass (JJ) let alone playing a jazz and rick..
Yep JJB = Jean Jacques. Who's JJ?
Hmm, starting to think this programme should be retitled Power Pop Britannia.
It certainly stretched the definition of punk. Most of the acts themselves probably wouldn't have used the term to describe their music at the time or now. And the Count Bishops were surely Showaddywaddy in very poor disguise?

XTC = punk? I'm off to the pub
No I would have agreed with that but I think it may be more due to the 'iconic' images of Sid and his white precision. BB
Amazing how that image, along with Simenon's, endures? Certainly Fender are in the minority on tonight's showing? Ans isn't that the young Clarky on lead in The Members? Joy Division; another Ric
-
And to cap it all...... Wobble on Ampeg
-
And there you go. 2 in a row. Steve Severin now there was a bass player I liked and I was never big on punk BB
Yep, the more, shall we say 'prog' players seem to be on Jazzes?
-
Undertones, another Ric? I must have been dreaming my association between Precisions and punk?
-
Best tone so far is Cooper Clarke but can't see the bass?
-
Rics way ahead of Precision (although the definition of 'Punk' is quite loose). Not a Jazz to be seen either How did they afford them? They're probably all Fakers
-
Kinda talking to myself here aren't I
-
No, scrap that, Magazine, Lurkers & Vibrators on Rics. They look so wrong in punk?
-
Ah, JJB & Simenon, normal service resumed
-
I was expecting lots of Precisions. Quite a few Rics and Gibsons so far?

Mesa Boogie 1516B Diesel EV-Loaded 450W Cab W/Flightcase £100
Beedster replied to TheButler's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
So what's going on with this rather odd thread then? If there's guys lining up has it sold? Are you prepared to split and sell drivers (not hard to test whether an individual driver is or is not the problem after all)? If not, would another enterprising local BCer like to buy it and part out (I expect you'd get more than £100 for the unloaded cab)? Or is anyone driving from up there to down here anytime soon -
Innovation golden slap strings sold

DB strings are horses for courses though, some strings just work on an instrument irrespective of price; don't just assume that because they're the original that they're not as good as a £100 set on that instrument. First question; are you happy with the sound? If not, ask whether it's strings or the instrument, 'cos with the cost of double bass strings relative to a cheapish EUB, if there's going to be trail and error it might be best to do it with second hand EUBs that you can sell on for the same price. I went from Dean to Stagg to Aria to Yamaha EUBs in less than 6 months and only the Yamaha worked for me. In my experience the strings on an EUB are far less of an issue than the EUB itself. And now I don't even have an EUB as once you've played DB blah blah blah -
Very interesting and thanks for the reply, I'm going to take a look over the weekend. Good thread C
I gig with a 30watt fender champ (handmade, not fender) and it's well loud enough. Guitar not bass, though the amp would be fine for bass with a couple more cabs.
Depending on the type of sound you're after, there's a big difference between guitar watts and bass watts. I use over 200w of Mesa tubes to get the tone I want alongside a guitarist using 20w of Fender tubes. OK, if I was happy with less control over tone and a lot more drive I might be able to use less, but I'm not. Personally I think that you'd need to be playing in a pretty quiet band for a 30w bass amp to do the job well. Wiser heads may of course disagree.....
Threadjack warning Chris, have you used these strings before? How do they compare with the stock strings on the Stagg? Reason I ask is that Daf has very kindly lent me a set, but I'm going to have to file the nut on the Stagg to try them. So unless I'm confident that they're an improvement it's a bit of a risk. Any thoughts?
Hello mate, good to hear from you. I've used the Silvers which according to Clarky are the same thing. I only had a Stagg for about a week and didn't like it very much so may not be the best person to advise, but I don't think they would be my string of choice for an EUB; I get quite a lot of finger noise from them, they tend to need a high action to play anything but slap (as in my experience - and with my fairly crude technique - they can be quite rattly at low action), and they're very low tension. I used to go for the opposite on my old EUB (Yamaha SLB) as it just sounded muddy with guts or similar. They also don't work with a mag PUP? In short I wouldn't file the nut unless someone else here gives you the confidence to do so. Hope I haven't pissed on your barbecue mate, and hope all's well C
