1974 Fender Jazz on Ebay - not quite as it should be!
Beedster replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Bass Guitars
Saw this today and alarm bells rang straight away - lots not quite right with it. http://cgi.ebay.co.u...ME:B:SS:GB:1123 Should someone tell him?
Don't see a whole lot wrong, care to enlighten us? -
Bit of work on the saddles and the action would come down easily, it's not a neck problem, it's just that being a neck through there is nothing you can do about the pretty much straight line from nut to saddles. To be honest, this height issue is one of the limitations of Hipshot bridges and is why I've reverted to Rick models, despite their less than ideal intonation options! Having said this, when this arrived from the Bass Doc I was pretty surprised at just how low the action was so it might be that a tweak or two of the rods would get this back to where Clarky and Jack with their evident preference for 'not a real man's action' would prefer Worth mentioning that my reason for sale was genuine in that a rather nice v63 came my way at a price that really made it a no-brainer. I won't say that the Faker matches the v63, but it's certainly not far off (probably a similar difference in quality as you'd find between a Fender Custom Shop and a standard MIA as opposed to that between a Custom shop and a Squier/MIM). Where it does beat the v63 is the circuit (stereo and VTC), the neck (much smoother and much faster), the weight (!) and IME the appearance, which is a lovely old mojo'd patina. Goes without saying that Clarky is a true gent and probably in an even better mood to deal with than normal following his recent victory in the London Mayoral Election
That's correct, one of the feet from the metal holding down the transformer had snapped off. Since deciding to sell this has been fixed.
Ah, thanks for clarifying. Seemed odd when i read the revised post 'cos you originally said it would require a new part from Mesa? Guess their parts Dept is quicker than it used to be! Good luck with the sale. C

TC1144 sold, lots of PMs re pics of the Ampeg which I will sort tomorrow (although it looks like a SVTII-P in good condition). Re the Peavey's I'll also open them up and identify the tubes tomorrow; worth stating that they are both surprisingly good and surprisingly powerful (I gigged the 120 in a VERY loud power trio with a drummer who liked to hit hard and never got it much above mid way on the master, pretty clean tone even at that level also). As is always the case with Peavey gear, the power amps aren't light, but unlike some of their SS gear which has eft me feeling pretty ambivalent, the two power amps really impress (which is why I think I'll keep whichever one doesn't sell first) C

With exceptional generosity given that I would have paid for them, Kev sent me a set of Evah's, and in doing so got me out of a bit of a hole given that two 'retailers' of said strings had failed to send me a set. I'll be making a charitable donation on Kev's behalf for the strings (and that's not to the local bar), so Kev's act of generosity has benefitted both me and the charity in question. 100% top guy, I hope I get the chance to repay the generosity some day Chris

Anyone got any Evah's for sale?
Beedster replied to Beedster's topic in EUBs & Double Basses For Sale
Hi Chris. The set of strings that were on my bass when I bought it I think are evah mediums (bridge end silks are green with a black stripe running through it, peg ends are different colours). I've no idea how old they are but I took them off 18 months ago and won't be putting them back on, my bass is too thumpy-sounding for them and I found them hard work to play. If you want to PM me your address you can have them, gratis. - Kev
Black and green silks and hard to play, that sounds like the babies! PM sent Kev, thanks Chris -

Another +1 for Mark for dealing with a problem (my fault not his) in a very professional and understanding way. You can never really judge how someone is until you see how they react when there's a problem, and on that basis Mark's a 100% guy to deal with. C

I'm kinda interested in the history of amplifying DB; when it first started, what sort of amps, mics, PUPs etc were used, how players dealt with feedback, bleed etc? Given the problems folks on here (me included) seem to constantly face getting heard, I always find it amazing when listening to some very old recordings just how well the DB comes through, even in big bands.
To be honest, as I can see this discussion going on for months without getting anywhere, I suggest we agree to disagree.
I think all possible arguments have been aired and, on that basis, this sentiment should prevail
When I give advice about buying a bass I will point out issues to look out for, but I would never, ever completely write off a particular brand as doing so could mean that the person asking for advice may, if they took that advice, miss out on the very instrument that works for them. We're all different and we all need different things.
The sort of bad advice that stopped me playing Rics for about 30 years
