Just f***ing love them, simple as. Saw them miming at the Olympic closing ceremony last night, and even that made me smile. Over and above always seeming to land albums at pivotal points in my life - I was living in Venice Beach when BSSM was released, fell in love to One Hot Minute only to experience a very painful break-up soundtracked by Californication, with something of a recovery to Stadium Arcadium (yep, long and tough tough break-up) - it’s probably also a combination of my being the same age as Flea, having been a slap player in a funk-rock band in 85-86, and having that strange sense that no matter how much I love mote credible styles, and especially Jazz and upright, if there was one band I’d love to have played in…. Another upside, wearing a RHCP t-shirt tends to get you served quicker in bars 😆

First gig with band in 2010, 120 miles from home, singist hasleft mic bag at home and drummer had done the same with his stick case. I sorted the former although meant no BVs from me, rhythm guitarist - I suspect with good reason - takes sticks to all gigs so sorted the latter. I only gigged with them the once

I suspect a mistake many of us make is expecting good technicians to also be good composers?

All’s well that ends well 👍

We’ll agree to disagree on that 👍

There’s a lot of truth in the above, there is some incredible music being made right now, I’m always humbled by how much of the music my kids listen to is innovative, skilfully executed, and well produced, despite being performed by artists who you might expect to be the opposite. It’s too easy to get trapped in a genre/era model and not see real innovation elsewhere

Don’t start argumentative threads then

As I’ve said before on BC, the guy’s playing inspires me, I’ve worked on some of his versions and they’ve helped my technique no end, he’s not an album musician but that’s not his thing 👍

Seriously, your views in music are not shared by everyone so you threaten people, perhaps get out on the streets and threaten some minorities while you’re at it 👍

Beautiful, a unique and quite extraordinary instrument. These sell for stupid money in the US, hard to put a ‘normal’ price on UK sales given they come up for sale around once every five years here. They also have unique tone, perfect for bluegrass and country but surprisingly good in jazz (great for rockabilly of course). Frankly I think Lawrie’s underpriced this, but he’s like that 👍 -
Ovation Magnum II Fretless with Graphic EQ

And a very chunky/deep neck profile. If I ever need to change between fretted and fretless on the same bass - happens occasionally - it's a 15-minute job to swap necks over and tweak action. Think I'll stick with that method 👍
-
When selecting a board material for a fretless bass, plastic is not my first choice..... Although of course according to many on here the material chosen makes no difference to sound
-
Yep, many lessons learned on this one 👍

Two collections within 50 miles of each other, one two Mesa Diesel cabs (not urgent) and one a bike that was time-critical as it was a gift that needed collection within a 2-hour slot on the evening in question. And yes, I paid over the odds which is why it was so frustrating that he was so poor. By paying that much I hoped to avoid the usual courier shit And yes, I'm acutely aware this is a very first world problem

Mate, you did your best and I'm very grateful, especially as you were on holiday at the time. You tried to help the guy out as he built his business, which was good of you. It however says a lot about him that despite the high quantity of work your advocacy here had brought him, he still refused to act decently when things went wrong and you intervened to try and resolve. £325 is a lot of cash for a courier delivery, in fact it was £235 more than Shipley quoted, but I need the item picked up in a small window and he agreed to do that. I suspect that by keeping my £325 in the short term he's going to lose far more in the long-term. So be it, it was all his choice.

1972 Jazz Bass - Verification of a few things
Beedster replied to TheStarsmith's topic in Bass Guitars
Most of the original finish mid-70s black Jazzes I've seen have finishes that were heavily cracked and falling off in lumps. No idea as to whether Fender had some issue with black finishes in that era, but whenever I see a relatovely decent black finish on a mid '70's Jazz it looks wrong (oddly I've not come across a Precision with similar issues)? -
1979 Yamaha Pulser - Made In Japan - *SOLD*
Beedster replied to jay-syncro's topic in Basses For Sale
I had the same model in a natural finish, and the comparison with Fenders of the era (late 70's) doesn't stand up I'm afraid. The Yamaha was infinitely better. Very good materials, very well engineered (built like a tank but not especially heavy), well finished, and evenly balanced across and up and down the strings. Lovely instrument. And as is always the case when I've found a really good bass at a decent price, I sold it in order to buy something far more expensive and of much lower quality 🤔
