  1. I met one of the top session players when he came to my house to buy a bass (yes, I sold one). Even my youngest daughter who was four at the time said afterwards ‘Dad, he was really good at bass wasn’t he?’. And yes, he really was good at bass, made me realise just how far I’d need to go to even think about a pro career. And playing bass is only one of many skillsets required 🙂
  2. Expensive and ultimately unsatisfactory experiment I suspect 😕
  3. If yes even more of a bargain 👍
  4. I had a soundpost go down in a rehearsal and couldn't find anyone to the work without a 4+ week wait, so I set about doing it myself. Not only did I do it and make a decent job of it (it's still up two years later), but I learned how moving it around changes the characteristics of the bass itself. Us UPs (Upright People) can (allegedly/so I'm told) spend a lot of money on strings, PUPs, mics, preamps, and amps in the pursuit of perfect tone, while in my case 4-hours with a pair of kitchen forks, some string, and an as it transpired completely unnecessary first aid kit, was an equally interesting and varied journey, albeit cheaper 👍
  5. It's OK, you're among friends, we all know the rules 🤔
  6. Sorry @grahamd, totally missed that post, yes, bombproof, if Fender had used the same finishes in the 60's there'd be no such thing as relics today! I played this alongside my two go to basses the other night and got the action very very low indeed, which speaks volumes about the quality of the neck and fretwork on these as well, and as for the tone, the Retrovibe Stinger pre really does do the job nicely (details here https://retrovibe.co.uk/product/retrovibe-stinger-77-classic-mm-stingray-bass-eq-pre-amp-2-band-pre-eb-circuit/) I'll let you know re the pickguard 👍
  7. A tad excessive 😆
  8. In the meantime stick a capo between nut and tuners, works a treat 👍
  9. That’s a Peruvian Yucca Flute, water messes with its core tone 👍
  10. Yep but once you’ve bought the book you’ll be doing it for yourself for ever, frankly none of the jobs in question require much skill or even specialist tools, just decent materials and patience 👍
  11. Yep, although IME most studio owners wouldn't be so daft as to accept that as an excuse for not paying (although having said that, I guess bands can be pretty loose about these things when making arrangements).
  12. We've all been there, even in the most amateur of bands frontmen/women (although more so men in my experience), can be utter prats. I work in sport occasionally and there's a sense among practitioners that many athletes are at their best when their mental health - or at least their ability to rein in extremely narcissistic and egotistical traits - and therefore their ability to function in 'normal' social settings, are at their lowest. I often chuckle and say "You think this lot are bad, you should spend some time in the. music business....."
  13. There's a lot of shitiness in there @ezbass but while he was a cock to you the most shitty is not paying the studio fee. That is 100% unacceptable and I hope he gets taken to court, no matter how small the fee
  14. FWIW I allowed myself to be talked into using a musician who charged for rehearsals as well as gigs a few years back and I would never do it again 👍
  15. A Zen Master at the top of his game 🙏
  16. Buy 'The Book' and do it yourself mate, you'll get lots of help on this forum 👍
  17. So they don't really have another bass player then....
  18. Yep, there's something very solid and well-engineered about that series, the necks were especially good. This instrument has aged really nicely, the pickguard especially. Can't believe 2005 instruments are approaching vintage, feels like yesterday
  19. Wow, 2005 price as well, that’s an amazing deal 👍
  20. This (for sale on this forum) might be a better bet for you ?
  21. I always enjoy your vids @greyparrot 👍
  22. Yes, happy, another lesson learned though And I will always keep a Precision as my go to bass 👍
  23. It's all water under the bridge now @Kev. I opened opened a partial refund request with Reverb to cover a new circuit having messaged the seller, but the seller refused this so it was simply closed, no investigation or request for details from Reverb. A week or so later I opened a full refund case, again refused, so I opened up a chat with Reverb to try to resolve things, which was clearly a bot. I had to navigate a lot of time-wasting before I was able to talk to a person, who asked for further details and then indicated that the conversation needed to move to email where I would need to provide photographic evidence. It was a busy day so didn't get around to it and received an email the following evening saying the case had been closed but that I could reopen by going through the same process again. Arghh! I did wonder if they have some glitches with their IT, but either way, it seemed chaotic and rushed, and at no point offered me the opportunity to point out that photos of a circuit that doesn't work are not going to be much use if the seller simply refuses to take any responsibility. Either way, it's a rare and unique bass, and if Status are unable to replace the circuit I can probably get something interesting from John East or elsewhere. I think I got a bit hung up on the electrics, when really it's the extraordinary design and engineering of the bass itself, especially the neck which is quite unique and extraordinary, as well as it's lovely origins and history, that are key. So all in all, perhaps Reverb's crapness did me a favour 👍
