  1. There is a visceral response to high SPLs and the lower the frequency the greater the response, so yes, big bass cabs on stage have a real effect. But I doubt there's any longer a case for saying you can't get the same tone via other means, both sides of the equation - signal processing and amplification - have just moved on so much. And that's ignoring the negative effects of high SPLs
  2. Yep, fair point 👍
  3. Are you also using ear protection?
  4. Exactly 👍
  5. Not sure an 8x10 is a good idea in either a rehearsal room or studio
  6. Large cabs are getting like pianos which you petty much can't give them away. Audio technology has moved on a hell of a lot and most gigging bassists without roadies just don't need the hassle of large cabs. Good time to buy one
  7. I'm going to leave this here for the weekend and then probably keep it. In all seriousness you will not find this gear at easier terms so speak now or forever hold your peace
  8. Absolutely, £30 return if you shop around, you get to visit Margate which is a very nice place (these days), and to meet one of Kent's premier bassists. What's not to like about that 🤔 Hurry up or I'll buy it
  9. I think one of those two used to be mine! Either way, the absolute king of stage amps, nothing sounds - or feels - quite like it. The reference point for all other amps in my opinion. If you haven't owned one and had the pleasure of watching your guitarist's jaw drop at the sheer visceral power, I'd recommend it as a true bass player's bucket list entry 👍

  11. I certainly wouldn't risk it
  12. I can't escape the sense that when we discuss online retailers we want them to be more like high street music shops, and when we discuss high street shops we want them to be more like online retailers. I've had probably 18 really good experiences with Bass Direct and two bad ones, and reflecting on this thread it's the two bad ones that probably stick in people's mind.
  13. Keep me posted mate 👍
  14. Would be happy to consider trade for high quality bass or high quality amplification, some electric gigs coming up 👍
  15. I'm out as soon as anyone uses the P word
  16. Like Simon & Garfunkle reuniting without Simon
  17. @walshy is your friend still doing collections/delivery and does he ever come down south do you know? Hope all's well mate 👍
  18. Made me laugh
  19. If I could afford to own a Wal I wouldn't need to gig the Dog and Duck on free beer night 👍
  20. I'm sorry, a band that lets the singist touch the PA....? Too many questions, the main one being why?
  21. I reckon you're going down a rabbit hole here Dan, you might spend a lot of money and wait a long time and still find it doesn't feel right (neck dive, different feel/sound etc). I injured my back a few years back lifting timber and had to wear a lumbar brace for a gig, amazing how it reduced the perceived weight of the basses (one of which was a lump). I wouldn't choose to do it all the time but it made me realise that there's a lot more to the perceived weight of the bass than the actual weight of the bass (my physio said the brace also altered my posture for the better which would have made a difference also). Have you tried alternatives, wider/heavier strap etc?
  22. Nomad Bassman, for when you absolutely gotta compress the f*** outta everything 😀 Loved mine 👍
  23. For me this comes down to something more than tone. The upright bass requires (forces) the player to adopt a different style in terms of structure and timing of the parts by comparison with electric. It's less tone and more 'I can tell that's not upright because that's not how you'd play that part on an upright'. I played in a Jazz combo a few years back and the composer/keyboard player had recorded all the original demos using software (keyboard triggered) for the upright parts, he was a very competent composer and musician. He understood the limitations of the instrument he was emulating and you could hear this in what he chose to play even though he was using a keyboard to record them. It's not about sounding like an upright, but playing whatever instrument you're using as you'd play an upright.
