  1. All things considered I've never regretted letting a bass or amplification go, as what I have now is probably as good as I could ever need. My dabbling with some seriously nice basses from Wal, Sadowsky, Musicman, Fender Custom Shop, Rickenbacker, Status, etc, and equally good amps by Mesa, Ampeg, Aguilar, Phil Jones, Musicman etc has allowed me to calibrate very precisely the sweet spot between what I like and what I don't like and what I need and what I don't need. I now have two very different electric basses (one fretted one fretless), two very different double basses (one wood, one aluminium), and two very different rigs (one very rude Californian and one very polite Scandinavian). Do I miss all the other gear? Not really. Do I regret selling any of it? Possibly on a financial and an ego basis, but certainly not in terms of instrumental value no 👍
  2. So is "Damn I wish I'd bought it when I had the chance" remorse 👍
  3. Bit of a thread resurrection here, but this came up again the other day, and I realised that the files downloaded locally are in fact the same (rather poor) quality as the files downloaded from the Zencastr website. Our tech guy is looking at Loopback today as we're about to start a wave of remote interviews and it may enable us to record both centrally to Zencastr and locally to the speaker's hard drive at the same time, which I would much prefer (i.e., asking people to send me the locally stored file with the Zencastr file as backup only), but any suggestions for better platforms than Zencastr also welcome.
  4. Oh dear, band suicide, a singer hissy fit live on the internet
  5. Was just wondering why/how he has gone unstopped for so long, and realised that perhaps the clue's in the surname 🤔 And with reference to this, and all joking aside @hiram.k.hackenbacker advice, and especially 'alleged' needs to be noted. Anyone attempting to take the law into their own hands is, ironically I know, breaking the law and potentially far more serious laws than Mason has broken to date. This guy hasn't been nicked because he's probably got all sorts of alibis/excuses/mitigations (and potentially a few friends in other places.....), a mob showing up on Saturday - one that are clearly the protagonists with an internet site clearly publicising their intention - gives the Police little choice and sufficient evidence. He might even contact the Police and tell them that you are making threats with reference to a specific time and place anyway, he will know the inside-outs of the law in these situations quite well I expect, and it appears he really is that slippery. And of course, he might have more mates with him than you can take with you, and he will no doubt be filming the whole thing to prove his innocence. There really are cleverer ways of getting this guy 🤔
  6. That’s not BC, that’s just human nature 👍

    In Memoriam

I know, I see it at the top of 'Unread Content' and I have a huge sinking feeling. We lost a member a few years back who although I'd never met in person I'd spoken to on the phone many times, and I sat absolutely stunned when I read it, and it seemed so odd given I didn't even know what he looked like. I guess one of the downsides of the huge number of people you meet via the internet compared to the old days of only knowing the people who lived in your street
  8. Beautiful instruments, well worth that money by a long shot. I used to gig mine when a DB was either too big or just not right for the band, and it can do DB better than most, surprisingly good for - dare I say it - slap
  9. That would be glorious, as you say he plays the part well. Turner plus a possible Oscar 👍
  10. Beautiful ensemble playing but, given they are a Beatles tribute act, do they really need the charts ?
  11. All good advice above, but to be honest I'd rent one for a few months so that your son really gets a feel for it and then do the rounds to buy one. £120 spent on 3-months rental could save you significantly more down the line if your son is better able to discriminate an instrument he likes and can play from one he doesn't and can't. I'm obviously unaware of how tall your son is but going straight to 3/4, which is the size played by most adults, might be quite a big step also. It might be what he's playing at school but that doesn't mean it's the best size for him to develop on 👍
  12. I had the pleasure of 20 minutes in an audition room with Tina and an agent in the late 80's, a glorious lady with the most infectious laugh and energy. I still smile when I think about it, I was young and crap, she knew it but she still made me feel I'd done well. One of the all time greats, and what a life she had. RIP Tina ❤️
  13. A decent luthier could build you something close to an SLB-100 for a whole lot less. I have a mate who's a carpenter and we were considering a 4/4 EUB custom build using commercially available neck, bridge, and tailpiece with a carved SLB-100 style body (i.e., removable treble and bass side bouts) using very high quality wood. It would have been passive, but let's face it the pre-amp has never been the selling point of any of the SLBs, even the 300. He quoted £1000 for the work (parts on top of that), but it was before lockdown and wood has gone up a bit since then (and I found an SLB-100 at £1200 used which made more sense than a 12-month lead time). But at even £2k it would save you £3k and probably still lose a lot less money if you needed to sell.
  14. Wow, lucky you, not an easy amp to come by these days it would seem 👍
  15. Suspect seeing if there's one you can borrow is the best starting point, what size does he need and where are you based. I used to know a guy who looked after orchestral instruments for the local education authority and he couldn't give double basses away fast enough, no one plays them any more apparently, so you might get lucky 👍
  16. Bought a lovely unit new last week which at £300 was around the same price it was being sold by two sellers here used Sometimes people pay over the odds new, sometimes prices drop especially digital audio, sometimes sellers are naive, sometimes they’re greedy, but I have noticed more of it here recently. Put another way, the days of unexpected -or even expected - bargains seem to be behind us, I hope temporarily 👍
