  1. I get it, and a lot of that is true. But for some folks that versatility is important, not just within a single set or recording, but more commonly between them, it's bloody useful to have a single bass that can do multiple classic tones at the flick of a switch (and you can turn the lights off BTW) πŸ‘
  2. Here's mine BTW
  3. I'm selling an Enfield as I'm no longer playing electric bass. The reason you don't see many for sale is because they are THAT good, seriously, people who have them hang onto them. And yes, while pre-amp selection makes a difference, the Quads replicate Jazz, Precision, and Stingray basses perfectly, as well as offering a whole range of other options. Mine's fretless but as a Fender fit instrument you can pretty much put any aftermarket neck on it. I suspect the reason they were discontinued is similar to for example the EBMM US SUB range, combination of the costs of making such good instruments plus competitive market forces etc, so often the case in audio gear.
  4. Perhaps post in items wanted section Peter πŸ‘
  5. Get a pro setup and start experimenting with changes from there Andy πŸ‘
  6. Rabbit meet hole πŸ˜€
  7. I'll try and get on to it at the weekend Brian, busy week πŸ‘
  8. Yes, nicely put, that pretty much sums it up @pn_day πŸ‘
  9. Hi Brian, I see no reason why not, I’m not sure how well the existing nut would accommodate but can check, and I’ve a couple of 5-string sets around the place I could try if the nut does permit πŸ‘
  10. Far too many outstanding instruments sitting unsold on this site at present, and with work to do on my studio and a double bass to restore I could use the money tied up in this bass far more effectively at present (it's been pretty much unplayed for 6-months). So, I'm going to offer it for Β£1000, no trades no PX, ideally collected or handed over in person assuming you're not in Aberdeen (although I'm still happy to post), and on the understanding that if money I'm owed and have been waiting on for a few months comes in I will put the price back up again
  11. Thanks @agedhorse πŸ‘
  12. Hey Paul, I'm not looking to work on an amplifier, I'm simply checking whether an off the shelf switching cable cable will work, and if not whether it'll do any damage to the amp in question, I think you've misread the posts πŸ‘
  13. Yep white vinegar is very good, I've just removed a load of PVA from a DB neck joint. You do need to be patient and take your time πŸ‘
  14. I'd like to offer an opinion but in my case 'subtleties' and 'double bass' do not sit in the same conversation. Having said that, and assuming it's working as it should and set up well, I really doubt you, the band members, or the punters would notice any difference in tone.
  15. Yep, that's an F for sure πŸ‘
  16. Thanks Rabbie much appreciated mate πŸ‘
  17. Just found this 4/4 board but it ain't cheap https://www.woodbrass.com/en-gb/fingerboard-gewa-4-4-double-bass-fingerboard-ebony-quality-1a-p241917.html As @JoeEvans says, best bet might be to get it planed and see how it goes
  18. Thanks Rabbie, much appreciated, it would put my mind at rest if you could check the G is the same, and I'll start measuring at my end πŸ‘
  19. BTW I looked for off the shelf boards for the 4/4 bass I'm working on and didn't have much luck. Most blanks from decent suppliers only appear to go up to 3/4, although given how much basses vary in size, it might still work https://caswells-strings.co.uk/product/fingerboards-ebony-bass/
  20. Ha ha,. sorry mate I assume you're thinking of doing it yourself? The board wood, even shaped blanks, is pretty cheap, it's fitting it and setting it up that's the real challenge as the chances of even quite a well shaped blank being a close fit are slim. While I have no idea how skilled you are in the shed, I'm competent, there are woodworking jobs I can do, and there are those I can't, and I'd put it firmly in the latter, especially as any change in thickness and/or shape will have implications for the bridge and the nut and I wouldn't want to have to reshape those also. I suspect it's a job best left to the pros Jack, others may however be more optimistic πŸ‘
  21. ...either way thinning an already unstable board will likely make it more unstable?
  22. Great minds Joe
  23. Crikey, that's a but of a shocker Jack. Is it the board only or board and neck that have moved? I'm currently restoring an old German upright and while the board has moved a little the neck itself hasn't. If your's is the same, given the board wood in question has moved so much in so little time, might a new - and possibly more stable - board be an option?
  24. Hey Rabbie, I get the impression that quite a few folks playing 4/4s use Olivs, so unless they make/used to make a 4/4 set I'm assuming these might do the trick, any chance you could measure them for me, and possibly let me know the playable length also i.e., without silk? No rush mate πŸ‘
