1.
I like the videos below, they show off that amazing Kubicki slap sound. Perhaps the best one I heard was a cover of a guy playing 'Heathrow' by Level 42 on a Kubicki Ex Factor, it sounded incredible. The video doesn't appear to be on youtube anymore though!
I sold my Kubicki to Jan Hollberg, a very nice chap indeed - they are the best traditional sounding slap basses, Status/Modulus is a different world - I've personally never liked a thru neck bass' slap tone
2.
I was always a reluctant admirer of fretless bass until I heard Rick Danko
This is my kinda music!
3. Do love the fretless on the John Martyn songs. Talk Talk's fretless stingray tone is just brilliance.
4. Still listening to part exchange offers on this. The ebay ad has better pictures also.
5. Why does the Zender bass have to be ugly
6. Aww wicked! Thanks guys i've got a sod of an assignment to write for University, these should keep me awake until the morning! I love ink illusian by Alain Caron and Michael Manring's enormous room but the rest have yet to be heard! My mum's a massive fan of Paul Young and Kate Bush so maybe i'll recognise those from uncountable car journeys . Thanks again! Keep em coming!
7. This has to be my favourite fretless bass recording to date if I take Jaco out of the equation. One of the best Santana songs IMHO, made me dip my hand in my pocket to get my Cort A4 defretted by Overwater. That said, i've never transcribed it! I made an attempt 4 years ago and remember giving up because my hi-fi speakers were shot. Tonight I'll be grabbing the sennheiser headphones and giving it another go! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfh3p0qcSLs What outstanding fretless bass tracks spring to your mind?? No Jaco !!
8. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Peavey-Cirrus-USA-4-...=item255ff7aee2 Just wanted to flag this for people with a budget looking for a pro bass, these are underrated, undervalued yet fantastic and getting rare - custom shop only now . I had one of these and the build quality, weight, playability and electronics were flawless the only niggles I had were that the 35" scale took a little getting used to, thought the tension was great. The preamp could do with a passive bypass switch - wouldn't need a backup then. I also prefer the dark finish shown here, mine was a pale maple quilt top - stunning but I don't like pale wood. I'll tell you what, you won't find anything this good for that starting price, very funky indeed. GO PEAVEY USA!! Hope someone picks up on it All the best guys! Oli Matt
9. Van Halen's Michael Anthony - they only have him because he's a nice guy, Wolfgang Van Halen is worse still.
10. Ahh that just looks great fun, I miss my flatwound shortscale
11. Thats the price I have in my head for stingray 5 and its definately worth the same. Top seller too, kindly offered to let me trial this when I was in the market for a G&L. Bump on me!
12. Love the shape of these basses, traditional finish! I'd change the pickguard to black only because I think it looks better with the maple. Jack of all trade electronics kind of like a G&L. Congratulations on the duty charges!! I got stiffed 100 or so quid importing a guitar
13. Billy Sheehan's book and DVD was really helpful to me - I don't play his style but the whole three finger technique and warm up exercises are a gem. I prefer the rockschool/Ed Friedland/Hal Leonard books for bass - the DVD's are pretty awful (and expensive!), All star right and left hand techniques were gash, Tony somebodies groove techniques were just as bad. Lick Library is fantastic for guitar tuition, they have just 3 for bass - mark king, john paul jones and john deacon, I haven't bought them as I can work out the latter twos stuff myself and Mark King leaves me cold. No patience for youtube lessons.
14. Is it burgundy mist? I do like the Shuker Jazz shape, saw a baby blue one a while back that was lurvely! Congrats!
15. This looks like something Janek Gwizdala would play. Bump on me!
16.
I've never played a Marleaux 6 string. My Marleaux 5 is ridiculously light though.
Ah I missed the boat on the singlecut, lovely bass!
17. Lovely looking jazz! Whats the scale on sadowsky 5's?
18.
I can't vouch for the Marleaux, but get the right builder and the right wood and a light 6 string is all good. I only play 6's now really and weight has been a big factor in finding the right bass. My Roscoe Fretless 6 is 9.1lbs and my RIM Marseer 6 is 8.6lbs. Both very light for 35" scale pro instruments (both lighter than an average Fender jazz 4). When Robbie built the RIM I had the option of having it chambered as well which would of made it even lighter!! Since I've been using a Comfort Strapp as well all basses feel about 1lb lighter than they really are! Shep
Thanks Shep! Someone recommended Roscoe to me recently, I'm not so keen on the shape but they have a spec that suits me well. I'll have to look up RIM I've never heard of those!! Does chambering bring up balance issues? I've gotta get me one of those comfort Strapp's just got to work out the length I need lol
19. I've just come into possession of a pearwood/sutkina bodied Marleaux consat custom 5 and its 7.7lbs (by the bathroom scales!). I don't even notice its there, i haven't had this much comfort playability-wise since I owned a Kubicki!! 6 strings have been a write off for me after my experience of a solid thru neck maple Cort A6, I also injured my back in a tyre factory a while back making it difficult for me to play anything heavy. I enjoyed playing a six and liked the C string for chords even if I did use it rarely, ultimate versatility is my goal! Does anyone own a Marleaux Consat Custom 6 on BC? What does it weigh??
20. If anyones worried about the B string theres plenty of reviews on their website from various magazines etc http://www.marleaux-bass.de/testbericht_co..._custom_50.html Think Musicman Stingray 5 or better.
21. I bet Hellborg finds Stevens (a male whoopie goldberg) really irritating but keeps getting forced by Warwick to play with him. Whats this about new Warwicks having massive necks?? The streamers i've played are well comfy and have thin necks - they have been only 4 strings though. EDIT: Oh yeah I like the chrome finish too! lol, I wanted one years back for a Judas Priest tribute band, solar angels! etc
22.
MB1. ...Stealth Mode on this? Turns into a Six string semi acoustic at the flick of a switch? Cool! BUMP!
Stealth Mode at the flick of a light switch. I've got a semi acoustic! probably why I haven't hunted down that setting so far...it'll be there though
23. Interesting bridge, what does it do? Added tension/string height?
24. Story of my life as a bassist: I was content with a Cort A4 after I got it defretted by overwater but it lacked aggression, I owned a fretted A6 for the B (also fab but lacking aggression). Now I love my Marleaux Fretless, flawless... but its not a guitar . I no longer play bass in a band so although fretless makes it much more fun, I enjoy playing guitars alone. I also loved my Bravewood '56 Precision being a rocker but as I can only afford one bass at a time - it really required that bridge jazz pickup at times.
