I don't imagine a cab would come from factory with 1 and 2 shorted together but someone might have 'improved' it? It still wouldn't require a 1 to 2 speakon but would explain why the cable works only 1 way. Suspect doofus involved.

I think the footprint of the BT is a red herring. It's barely bigger than any other 12" cab, only maybe 3'' wider than a 210 with a shelf port sat on its end. You really just want something semi disposable to use on this gig. There is a GK212 500w combo for 540 quid in the classifieds.

Only thing I can think of is you could be getting a momentary bad ground condition by thwacking a string against a pickup, akin to the pop that can occur with engaging pedals from standby sometimes when they don't maintain the same ground potential as one another.

That is strange. Maybe your idea of gain down is still a boost going into the 2nd pedal. What happens if you bypass the 2nd pedal?

You'll have to explain the problem with £££'s worth of gear on this gig. Eg I have a problem with leaving my good stuff overnight at venues I know to be insecure. As far as worrying about my stuff under supervision goes, I don't allow any beverage storage on top and that takes care of it. It's very hard to knock over two 210s that are ratchet strapped together.

What's the need for the Big Twin if two 210's can get the job done and solve the stage footprint issue?

A pair of BF 210 stood up tall would be pretty much as capable as your big twin cab. Trading in wouldn't cost too much if you keep the amp. Run a ratchet strap around the stack to make it resistant to a shoulder charge if you are that concerned about shenanigans.

Not just for the power handling imbalance is it usually a fool's paradise of a stack. Most often the 410 has such a superior sensitivity that when it's on top the 115 is completely inaudible to the player, and barely contributing to the overall output out front either way.
