Good answer !! Guess I'll have to leave them in the useless pile and stick to the set of EMGs. Ive also got a '91 SR600 and a '91 SR800, both with knackered preamps too !! I dont have a great track record with active IBZ stuff although they are awesome basses all round !!
-
No, just a standard 9 volt square battery. Why would they fit 9 volt batteries as stock then if it was wrong ?

I have an Ibanez Sabre SB900, had it about 10 years. The original preamp crapped out and has never worked so I stuck a set of EMGs in it. (its one of 4 of the 5 Ibanez basses Ive had, that the electronics have crapped out, you'd think I'd learn) I'd like to get a replacement / upgrade preamp for the original IBZ LO-Z P and J pickups. As far as Im aware those are active pickups (not passive with an active pre) so I'll need a preamp with pot values that will work with the original pickups ? I just want the damn thing to work !! Budget of up to £100. Whats the best course to take or any suggestions where to start ?

I've got an old 1991 Ibanez SR600 and the circuit crapped out (as they do) so I stuck a single EMG P. in it with the included VOL / TONE controls. I'd like to add the jazz bridge pick up to it so I'll need a pickup and an extra volume pot for a VOL / VOL / TONE circuit for the PJ set. Its an old EMG that was soldered in, not clip joints. What can be done to add the extra J pickup now ? Do I try to find a solder type pot and older pickup or will a modern clippy joint one work combined ? I appreciate I may have to cut the clip off a connector wire and solder here and there.

I remember seeing a white 4 string SB301 fretless at a guitar shop in Chester around 25 years ago. I loved the look of it and stood staring for ages.....

Todd from Propagandhi is prodigiously talented but if you want busy widdly fiddly as some seem to find this important, then Karl Alvarez from Descendents / All. Fat Mike from NoFX dosent hang about either !!

Ibanez magazine advert from around 1992 ?
Wayne Firefly replied to Wayne Firefly's topic in General Discussion
Ha ha brilliant, am I correct in thinking there was a blonde 'scientist' in a lab coat too or was that a different ad ? -
I seem to remember an Ibanez magazine advert on the back cover of either Guitarist or Guitar World for an Ibanez Soundgear SR950 in transparent teal. It was made to look like it was on a lab table with dorky scientists around it. I have searched online but alas to no avail. Of course fiding a copy with this ad in is pretty much impossible but if anyone could scan it or indeed confirm such an advert DID exist, at least I'll know it wasnt a figment of my imagination. Of course, it set me off on a lifetime lead of GAS for this particular specimen !!

[quote name='GremlinAndy' timestamp='1493767182' post='3290585'] Oh. Sorry. I only just noticed this thread. It was me who had difficulty getting my hyperbass... Mine is almost the exact same story as yours. Paid upfront. Ended up being about 8 months late as I recall. No mails or explanations. In the end Joe had said it was being packed for delivery. Still didn't arrive. I tried phoning, and more emails... eventually they said, it's being finalised (?) and that they didn't want it to go out until they were happy with it... All of which would have been perfectly fine, if they'd just told me a date with 8 extra months built into it. Like you, I was over four grand into them, and wasn't getting the customer service I felt I deserved. Just semi regular emails and all would have been fine. In the end it did turn up, and it's awesome. As is the 6 string fretless (non-hipshot) hyperbass I got later. And the Old Legacy I picked up later still, at a good used price... great basses. Are Zons worth the wait? Possibly, if you build a ridiculous amount of time contingency into your expectations of how long it's *REALLY* going to take! [/quote] I agree with everything you have said here. If I'd known it was going to take so long upfront, I'd have just gotten on with waiting. If I could find a good used price Legacy or another good Sonus, I'd probably go for it haha !! -

[quote name='Dad3353' timestamp='1493731335' post='3290216'] Maybe your 'Attachments' quota is all used up..? Try this... Go to your 'My Profile' (your pseudo, top right...). Select 'Edit my Profile' (black button a bit below...). Select 'Manage Attachments' (in the list on the left...). They are listed in date order. Navigate to oldest, select those to be deleted (tick boxes on the right...). Select 'Delete Selected' (grey button at bottom right of list...). Repeat, page by page, until all unwanted attachments are deleted. Using the BBCode link supplied by an external photo account such as Imgur or Flickr is a good idea, of course; even more so if using higher resolution photos. Your quota limit would never be reached using this method, and the photos are better presented. Just sayin'; that's what I do, and never need to worry about quotas. Hope this helps; meanwhile... Have a nice day Douglas [/quote] Thanks Douglas, it was that !!! Here it is. -

[quote name='RhysP' timestamp='1493719417' post='3290076'] They are superb basses, my Legacys were the best basses I've ever owned. [/quote] I'd love a Legacy but buying used is the way I would go in future !! Who knows what'll come up ??!! -

I did get it in the end. It arrived in late March, I'd assume the one on their FB page was from Jon bass on this thread as he paid for his 3 months after mine and recieved his earlier. To be fair, it is the pinnacle of the art of bassbuilding and it clanks and grinds with the best of them. Neck feels incredibly rigid. Utterly, utterly beautiful and its now out gigging hard. I dont want to say anymore about being a moaning B'tard, it WAS definitely worth the wait BUT I wish I'd had more honest information.... if they'd said upfront you could be waiting up to a year, I'd have still probably made the order. I'd paid upfront in good faith it was going to take 6 months to get built.... it took 16 months from payment to getting it. It was a happy ending whatever !!!!! -
Ampeg power stage uprate / upgrade possibilities ?
Wayne Firefly replied to Wayne Firefly's topic in Repairs and Technical
[quote name='Mottlefeeder' timestamp='1488555805' post='3250019'] Third time lucky? So for you have discussed the amplifier and the speaker. Just supposing that it is your instrument that is generating the problem - you could spend quite a lot of money on an amplifier whose power you can not use, and a speaker that farts even more because you have put it a box that was not designed for it. May I suggest that before you spend any money, you do some more testing with other signal sources - conventional bass guitar, MP3s that have a bass solo on them - anything other that a DB with a Piezo pickup - and find out if they fart too, or can be played at the higher volumes that you want. David [/quote] This may make you laugh but it sounds great, really full and punchy, no problems here. I have steel cored Eurosonic Ultralights on it and I made some aluminium mounts to fit Mustang bass pickups to the end of the fingerboard. A Lee Rocker inspired set up but an actual pickup per string if you like, rather than a P. bass pickup across all 4 strings. Theres 3 piezo contacts under the fingerboard for the slap bit, all wired to a Jazz bass style circuit. I dont have a standard style bridge piezo on it. Im doing another bass build with a similar style of pickup mounting but with custom wound Sentell pickups and a John East Stingray replica preamp so that should be fun !! So, the source isnt a problem.[attachment=239520:my old bass pickup mounts (1).JPG] -
I read somewhere that the 34 and a Stingray have the same neck pocket dimensions so should be fine.

Ampeg power stage uprate / upgrade possibilities ?
Wayne Firefly replied to Wayne Firefly's topic in Repairs and Technical
Thats good info, cheers mate !! Thats pretty much what I needed to know really. Its the Ampeg speaker not the EV. I also wondered about removing the amp head unit itself and attaching another small, more modern and powerful amp to the 'lid' and just putting a Celestion neo 15'' like a BN15 400X at 8 ohms in the cab. Save a lot of hassle. -

So the existing pre amp / tone controls would not work then ? Looks like a combo search then !! -

[quote name='Bigwan' timestamp='1488540868' post='3249781'] Afraid you're peeing upriver with this one. I wouldn't attempt this on ANY amp (and I'm an electronic engineer!). Just too much to take into consideration. With the speaker farting out it may be what's holding you back and a more efficient cab would certainly help. I'd start there. You obviously like the Ampeg sound, so if you decide to go for something louder then maybe one of their newer offerings, like the PF500. Saw one sell used locally for £170 quid last week. [/quote] Ok, lots to take on board there, great answer !! Can I just ask why ? -
I need a 1x15 combo for rockabilly upright bass. I have access to a 90's Ampeg B-15T, the transistor version. Its 100 watts and fine for rehearsing, but not loud enough for live use and the speaker gets farty. I'm considering buying a minimum 300 watts Trace / Ashdown or similar (I'd LOVE a Fender TV Bassman 1x15 !!) 1x15 combo or is spending the budget on a better, lighter more efficient 15'' driver and possibly maybe uprate the power stage to 300 / 400 or so watts. I like the amp, the pre-amp sounds great with the upright thumping through it, D.I. is fine, looks cool etc etc but I just wondered if a bigger transformer could be fitted and a speaker to match ? Any ideas, thoughts or opinions or am I peeing upriver even thinking about it ?
