Home studio monitors & practice speakers
Leonard Smalls replied to Salt on your Bass?'s topic in Recording
I sometimes practice through my Helix and Adam monitors - I've got the predecessors of these and they sound excellent - £400/pair. If you go for teh 7" woofer version you can get a pair for £359 including cables and stands from Inta... https://www.andertons.co.uk/adam-t-series-t8v-nearfield-monitor-2-way-8-woofer-each-t8v?msclkid=9e340124d7b6187f10ce6384574375f8&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=IMP || Main Catalogue || PLA 2 [Brand]&utm_term=4575755087676380&utm_content=adam -
That's Anarchy for you! 😎😁

Perhaps... But what it did do was encourage kids to get up and start playing in bands in a DoWhatTheFeckYouWant sort of way, where creativity, or at least Being Out There, was valued over absolute musical ability. Which, as a 14-15 year old at the time, I loved! Though of course nowadays, while Punk's Not Dead, it is often Formulaic Nostalgia...

I'm a great lover of the works of the Grimshaws, especially Todd and Eileen. And the pic looks like it needs some sort of screaming deathcore. So I've made a start...

What gives you the most MUSICAL pleasure?
Leonard Smalls replied to Mykesbass's topic in General Discussion
For me, it's when music has cojones - whether it's on record, disc, live or with me playing. And by cojones I mean something about it, which may be a pumpin' beat, the sort of out there playing that gives you the Stank Face * , being funky as hell, being completely crazed or just joyously beautiful. Which could be anything from Derek Bailey's "Mirakle" to Suicidal's "Su Casa", from Parliament's "Down Stroke" to a Schubert Impromtu. * -
Unpopular Musical Opinions: What are Yours?

While he was very good on that, I'd say Flea's best performance was seen by only a few hundred people.... And that was at an early UK gig, at the Mean Fiddler in Harlesden. Hillel Slovak only played on the 1st couple of songs, then disappeared (this was not long before he died). So it was up to Flea to fill in - and it was awesome, in the truest sense of the word! -
He was in Suburbia in 1983... Hammy dialogue, cliched but great fun!

A bit from our gig at Nice'n'Sleazy Fest 2nd June:
-
It's upcoming, but about 6 months away! After a good gig at Nice'n'Sleazy Festival in Morecambe we've been asked to come and support Vomit and Knock Off ( @Lozz196 's old band!) on New Year's Eve at the Star and Garter, Manchester.
-
We played the Nice'n'sleazy Festival in Morecambe yesterday... We were on at about 1800, there were probably a hundred folks in there, none of whom appeared to hate us! Not a single bottle of piddle was thrown, there were in fact people shaking about in a rhythmic fashion... 'Twas our 2nd gig with the 2 bass line up which worked very well - gnat's chuff'n'all. And I had the slight disadvantage of a broken leg, so had to sit. Which I enjoyed! I felt like a jazzer... And even more excitingly, I used my new (eBay!) Line 6 Helix LT. I like that too!

In what may also be an unpopular opinion, I prefer Youth-era Killing Joke to any other. Especially this: -
Bugger! I forgot to vote... Too tied up in my Whole New World of Hurt 😁 Either way, well done Mr Skank!

Embarrassing gigging moments: whats yours? :)
Leonard Smalls replied to Greg.Bassman's topic in General Discussion
In the early 90s we were going to play a gig at (iirc) the King's Head in Fulham... We were told that a number of record company scouts were specifically coming to see us as we'd somehow built a bit of a following. So we rehearsed like crazy, tight as a gnat's etc, and on the night someone had the bright idea that we should have a few beers so we might be just that little bit more stage-showey. About 6 pints later someone sparked up some serious grass reefs, after which we were all a touch spacey and drunk. So in order to alleviate this, some other bright spark brought out the coke, which we imbibed freely before going on. Needless to say, the whole band was completely Merded - falling about, out of time, unable to see properly and so playing everything wrong. But what was worse, being full of Executive Powder, we thought we were playing brilliantly. We weren't signed, and no record company scouts came to see us again! A valuable lesson was learned... -

Amazing how many times you hear folks saying "in 1000 years time, folks will still be playing The Beatles songs... Funnily enough, Bach himself was largely forgotten until re-popularised by Mendelsohn nearly 80 years after JS's death. So I don't hold out much hope for JohnPaulGeorgeandRingo (at least I hope not to 😁) -

He could write a good choon, but like with Bob Dylan, covers are better! 👌😁 -

I suspect that's overstating it somewhat! I don't think even a noticeable minority of BCers are ParkerBaileyBrotzmann fans! And talking of gateway drugs, here's one to Derek... -

Clichéd songs you feel you got to play, but don't want to
Leonard Smalls replied to Buddster's topic in General Discussion
To some extent! Some punters will only ever like what they know, they're usually the sort of punters who don't really like music and wouldn't go to a specific music venue. Last thing they'd want is new music they've never heard before - what they want is a nice easy sing a long and plenty beer. That's fair enough! However, I wouldn't go to the sort of place where everybody stands next to each other, shouting in their mates' faces, due to being an equal opportunities misanthrope. Dedicated music venue with new bands? Yes. Big packed boozer with covers bands, and large screens showing football at all other times? No. That's why I play in a shouty punkfunk band - last thing we want is an audience!
