Hi all, I am looking at doing some recordings of my self playing the bass parts along to my fav tunes! I have a decent laptop, what do I need to get eg software, camera mixers ect....? Any advice, info would be greatfully recieved!
Depends on the quality to you are expecting. I suppose the cheapest option is aim a camcorder at yourself and use it for both audio and video BUT I would expect the audio to be poor. Next step would be to record the audio separate using a USB audio adaptor and then add the recording onto the video you have recorded using your camcorder. Most video editing suites will allow you to add multiple audio layers, so you can add a layer for your bass and a layer for the original song (+ video layer of you playing). I use final cut express, but if you are using a PC, not sure what is available. Pinnacle studio maybe? [A good tip to syncing up audio/video is to use something that makes a noise at the start of the video (those wooden clapper boards they use in movies) and then sync the peak of the audio with the video of the noise being made.]
Thanks for that. I 'll probably have to get from Apple tho' ,as I'm mac and the cheaper ones are pc. Geetting annoyed when my tutorial book refers to loops that are not on version 7 . Either my files are corrupted ,or it's just basic loops. I did checkout that guys you tube site, but what I'm after isn't on there (ie beginning logic 7 etc) Maybe it's just me Will probably order upgrade to logic 9 tomorrow. Cheers for now
You will be fine getting the upgrade from Amazon to V9. Logic is not available for PC, so maybe it's someone's typo on amazon. V7's layout is horrible and confusing compared to V8/9. Well worth the upgrade IMO. I'm saving to buy V9 for at home, I've got 7 on my work laptop and I really struggle with it.
Basses are one thing, But cars?!?!?! Those guys have got balls!
A friend of mine goes mountain biking regularly and likes to get new ones using the 'bike to work' scheme. All was going well until he went out for a ride one day. His wife went in the garage and noticed that both of his expensive bikes were still hanging on the wall. That was when she found out he'd just spent a grand on bike number 3! She was unimpressed. A few months have passed and he's got his eye on bike number 4, although a little more wary about it this time.

I like how the small inset one near the top on the right is actually a guitar hero controller
Quite into Steampunk Art after visiting the exibition in Oxford at the weekend. Sorry these are mostly Guit@rz and mostly art rather than functional instruments but pretty cool none the less. IMHO.

easy and to the point can i ask how you record drums? do you just record in mono with one mic?
To be fair, I've not actually recorded drums with it yet as my kit lives at church most of the time. My plan was to record as midi. Next upgrade was to buy logic express as I believe it has a better set of drum samples to use. Although you can apparantly record as midi and then send the midi back to the kit and record using the line in f you want the sound off the drum module.
I don't know TBH I'm really enjoying just playing it at the moment, I'm sure I'll get an aesthetic idea for it at some point that'll probably involve little squares.
Wayne, I admit that I like the design of your other 'custom' basses, but from a very envious bass player - you don't need to do anything to this one. It's beautiful just as it is. [drool]

Mine is a little more spread out around the flat. Any recording has to take place in the living room. Drum kit in the loft. Instruments spread around the other rooms! Machine is a Mac mini 2Ghz Core 2 duo, 4gig ram. 320Gb hard drive. + 750Gb MY Book studio firewire drive. Recording straight in using an m-audio fast track USB. No fancy control surfaces, but the shuttle xPress which I bought for video editing comes in very handy. Monitor everything through my sennheiser headphones. Digital piano goes through an M-audio Midi Uno USB adaptor. Drums (not shown) are Roland TD3 V-Drums. I think that about covers it. Here are a few pics.... BUMP - lots of views but nothing yet. Whats putting you off, the price or the location. Or both? Maybe I'd be able to arrange postage if needed. I've got a hardcase that I bought with a bass to have it shipped in from Moos3h. Maybe, I could sell you the hard case for £20 (which Is what I paid for it) and postage could be arranged.
Hi. Am looking for a small portable mixer to use in church for a music group. Needs to be pretty flexible (up to 12 inputs of various types), sophisticated enough to compress vocals, gate channels etc, easy enough to use by occasional users and robust enough to survive being stuffed chuck into cupboards etc when not in use. Budget probably up to three hundred quid . Any suggestions? Thanks
I've not used a mixer with (good) on board compression. I'd get a behringer xenyx like a 1202FX (or similar) mixer as I've been really impressed with them (despite the usual behringer bashing), and a rack compressor like an alesis 3630 or a behringer one - you could alway stick it in a rack with a top bit to rack the mixer, then it would be well protected.
I keep thinking I'll buy a Squier Classic Vibe Jazz as my next and main bass, but then I also see the the Vintage AV4 in white and love it. I like the overall look of the Squier the best, but love the unsual "take" on the Jazz by Vintage. I'd also have another V940, THAT was a nice bass!
I've not played a Vintage Jazz bass, but this precision is nice to play. Having said that, I've just bought a Squier Classic Vibe Jazz and it plays a lot nicer (IMO) and is soon to become my main bass, making my yamaha a backup bass. But I'm not a huge fan of precisions anyway.

Here is a vintage branded precision bass. From what I know about it, it is about 10 years old and has spent the last 7+ year unused at a friends house. I took the bass off his last week, stripped it down, checked everything, changed the strings and gave it a setup. It plays nicely and looks very tidy. There are a few light scratches on the scratch plate from a pick, but this is very minor. The only damage is a thin gouge out of the back of the bass which is about 1 1/2" long. It has been painted black to cover it up. Included is a material strap. Ideally, I'm looking for £80. Does anyone know how much my 'vintage' precision would be worth? http://gallery.me.com/james.cartwright#100094 I've now stripped the bass down and cleaned it all up - and I've change my mind, now it been polished up, the sunburst looks pretty nice - you can see the wood grain through it. Changed the strings, set it up nicely. I plays pretty good (not that I've ever owned a precision before). The are a few little scratches on the front, but there is one gouge out of the back - I've taken a picture of it. If the answer is £20 then I'l keep it, but if I could get £100 for it, then I'd sell it as I don't really need 3 basses!
Electro Music Services in Doncaster have always served me well Real Time Music in Chesterfield are a decent bunch of lads as well.
+1 For Real time music. Great guys. Especially Mark if he still works there - top bloke, done me many a good deal over the years.

Yeah it is the wood grain - I've just taken all the hardware off it and given the body a really good polish. I'm actually surprised how much better the body looks. I'm thinking I might just leave the body as it is. I've also polished the bridge and neck and it all looks nice and tidy now. Amazing what a bit of TLC will do Upon taking the pick guard off, I've noticed that there is nowhere to adjust the truss rod. It would appear that the allen key is at the body end of the neck, but there is no cut out in the body to get to it. Is this normal? (I might add that I don't need to adjust it, just thought that it was weird) I've restrung the bass with a set of Rotosound strings I had licking about and managed to follow the 'ultimate setup guide' in this months Bass Guitar Magazine, so feeling quite chuffed with myself. Now I just need to replace the pick guard screws with some new ones as someone has put some nasty screws in as replacements and get some silver barrel knobs. I think it's safe to say that this is no longer a 'build diary' just an evening of tidying up!
no not just you, ive always done this. i use cheapo web straps with a slidey buckle so i can change really quick with one hand.
Me too. Although, I used to make the strap as long as it would go and leave it, but back then I always payed with a pick and only simple stuff. When I play with my finger I need the body higher. Recently, I just tend to leave the strap sort of in between and just use my fingers.

I've now got my 'Vintage' bass. http://gallery.me.com/james.cartwright#100086. I'm guessing it's a V4 then. Seems fairly tidy looking, a few rusty screws, but the colour of the sunburst is awful.

So, I've managed to get hold of this bass which I have offered to 'tidy' up. I was going to just chuck some new strings and knobs on it and use it to practice setting a bass up as I've not done one before. Now I'm wondering whether to refinish the body as it looks really nasty. Problem is, I've never done this before and I'm not really sure where to start. I'd be happy with the electrics / swapping parts etc, but the thought of sanding and painting freaks me out a bit. How easy is it and would I need to go and buy many thinks to do a good job of it? Any advice would be great. Photos here: http://gallery.me.com/james.cartwright#100086

I'm getting a 'vintage' precision copy tonight from a friend who has had it lying around for years. I suspect it must be 10+ years old, but don't really know much about it. How do I identify it? Also, does anyone know if a squier/fender scratchplate will fit on it, cos I'm thinking of using it as the basis of my first every project bass - so I can have practice at setting a bass up etc and then keep it as a spare for our church band I also need to get to some replacement knobs for the control as it doesn't come with any - where is a good place to get some - I don't care what make they are as long as they are reasonable quality and very cheap. I don't really have any money to spend on the project at the mo' so cheap is good.
I love Fat Mike´s stuff. The basslines to ´My Vagina´ and ´The Brews´ are great. love jamming along with them. His Gimme Gimmes stuff is brilliant! Love ´I only wanna be with you´-unreal intro! Really easy to get that tone, just harder to play like him. He and Matt Freeman are constantly underrated players with amazing ability!
I'm just listening to 'All Outta Angst' by NOFX and I've never realised how nice the bass line is to it. Went to see the gimme gimme's in nottingham a few years back - again just brilliant!
I can't play it, but it's one of my favourite NOFX tunes. I was lucky enough to see them play it live in Bristol, the whole thing, start to finish!
Ok so I'm jealous that you saw them play the decline. I saw them in about 99/2000ish play at Manchest Apollo with a load of other bands off Fat Wreck (guttermouth, bosstones etc). They were amazing. I'm not doing so great with the decline, got up to about 2mins into the song, but my memory is crap. I have to play along to the tab. Also trying to learn a few rancid songs. I'm loving the bass to 'fall back down', but most of my efforts are on the solo part of 'maxwell murder', I've learned the first half of the solo, but I cant quite get the speed right - I play it at about 1/2 speed
-
So I've been trying to learn this song. Man! The Decline Bass Tab I've found the tab, but you've gotta have a good memory - the tab is 5 pages long! Anyway, Fat Mike is a great bass player. Can anyone else play this? Any good tips?

Great bloke! Bought his Squier CV Jazz (seems to be a few now in his feedback ) Expertly packaging like a ninja - quick delivery and very good communication. Would recommend any time. Pleasure doing business with you James
As much as that?
I lasted just over a minute.... But don't you think that they are pushing the boundaries

If you are based in Lincs, there was a lovely New Fender 09 American Standard Jazz bass in a music shop in lincoln (not Music Rooms - the one thats past the train station) last time I went in. Sounds and played lovely, but about £900 new. Worth going and having a play. Music rooms in lincoln had the fender precision equivalent which is equally tasty.
