Entwhistle Pickups - what are your thoughts?
cameltoe replied to Grangur's topic in General Discussion
I bought a set of these P bass pickups. What is the script with the bar magnets? Never seen them on the outside of a pickup before. And the covers don`t fit in a Fender size pickup hole as the lugs are larger. No bigee but they will need some alteration to the pickgaurd.
A bar magnet means they are ceramic pickups, the pole pieces themselves are not magnetised so the magnet has to sit underneath. Cheaper to make apparently, not necessarily any worse from what I hear. Some of the best jazz pickups I've heard were in my silver series jazz (ceramic). -

I was about to wade in with 'change the batteries', glad to see its solved.

Amazing. I'd love a project like this. Good luck.

Just traded a pedal for some pickups- Ben was a gent and kept in contact about when they would be posted. Perfect deal! We're also handwriting twins.

Been working away on the contours, to get them nice and deep. Nearly there! Far better than the chunky curves it came with. One of the first things I look for on a Fender bass. My JV series and Roadworn both have great, vintage spec curves. My silver series P not so much. image by William Chesterfield, on Flickr You can see the plugged neck holes in this one. Arm contour getting there too. That vice has caused me a few issues, but nothing a hot iron and wet towel hasn't rectified so far. I emailed fender when I bought my Roadworn Precision who informed me they use USA pickups in the Roadworn series.
Did the JB57 have the raised A? I know my JV62 doesn't.
Yes. Vintage correct. The 1962 P basses never had the raised A, so hence the JV62's wouldn't either.
-
I've heard complaints about the JV p'ups before but the stock p'ups on my JV '57 are monsterous. Vintage tone but with a hint of grit. Loads of output and even tone across the strings. They are the raised 'A' pickups. No signs of any mods so I'm assuming they are as standard.
If it was a Mexican Standard then yes, but these go for over £700 new, so £400-450 is the going rate for these second hand. That said, I still remember about 4-5 years back when £450 was the price of a new one, so £300 is a pretty steep price increase in such a short amount of time.
Crazy isn't it? Mine was £350 back in 2008.
I am currently in the process of building an effective/cheap Bass pedal board and I am in need of a fuzz pedal to add some grit to my tone. I am wondering if anyone could recommend a reasonably priced fuzz pedal? I am currently looking at these two http://www.ebay.co.u...-cAAOSwHnFVu0Kx http://www.gak.co.uk...nt_MaAiPG8P8HAQ Does anybody have any experience with any of these pedals? I like the options available on the Rat Tack, however I really like the size of the Mooer Cheers
The Danelectro Cool Cat Fuzz is a good bet. If you can find a V1 pedal, it's an almost-exact clone of a Frantone Peach Fuzz and sounds very similar. A nano muff would work well if muff-sounding fuzz is your thing (It's not mine, I always find it a bit clippy sounding and one dimensional) I would steer clear of the Mooer personally. As mentioned above, the EHX Bass Soul Food is excellent for just adding grit to your tone, but it's not a fuzz, more a transparent drive.

No pics, no bass! Lets have a look at it! I have a JV, and I love it. As above, keep it original as possible. However, you may be able to be clever and replace P'ups and wiring without ruining anything but a couple solder joints, which I don't think will alter a JV's value too much.

I've bought a Japanese Squier... but what exactly?
cameltoe replied to JonnyScaramanga's topic in Bass Guitars
As above, £400 is more SQ series money than 'Silver Series' (or not) money. The official 'Silver Series', as mentioned above, have the logo on the end of the headstock. I have a 3-tone sunburst Precision at the moment bought from loudandclear on here in May, it's a great bass. I previously had a Jazz which was very good as well. Both cost me well under £400. There seems to be evidence to suggest the first batches of MIJ Squiers that came through in the 90's were unofficially referred to as Silver Series (due to the silver script), before Fender made it a 'thing' and added the actual Silver Series logo to back up the good reviews they had been getting. I'm not sure whether this is true, as certainly some of the non-silver series logo'd basses I've seen over the years have later serial numbers. Mine is an M- serial and my Jazz was an L- Serial, both had the logo. There is more info here: http://planetbotch.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/original-1992-squier-silver-series-stratocaster.html Regardless, I'm willing to bet there is very little difference between your instrument and a logo'd 'Silver Series'. They were built at almost the same time, in the same factory, from most probably all the same parts. In fact, have a measure of your nut width and see if it falls at 40mm, like the Silvers. Both my Silver's had Basswood bodies. If it helps put it into perspective, I've seen both Fender badged and Squier badged E-series instruments (made 1984-1987 in Fuji-gen Gakki.) I've played both as well, and the logo really had no bearing on the quality IMO. Nice bass- the scratch plate looks high-quality from the pics? -
It is, but it's not one of the states in the USA (just to be a pedant! ;-))...
Half the population of the USA probably think it is, mind.

Yeah now I've seen a couple, I don't think it looks as good as I'd imagined. Sonic blue, or mint green, it is. Anyone have a vintage BBOT (threaded saddles) bridge kicking about?
-
Plugged the holes tonight with some hard-wood dowel, and got to work on the contours. The contours were a bit 'modern' for me. Having played enough vintage repro basses over the years I do love deep contours, so this was a must. Arm contour is now looking good, but a bit more meat to take off the belly contour yet. Managed to have the vice slip on me as well so it will need a bit of a filler skim in a couple of areas. Thinking more about the colour, and I'm leaning toward a lighter colour with a cream scratch plate, Perhaps sonic blue or something similar. I have also thought about a blue/grey colour, something a bit farrow & ball ish, like this pumpkin: Wonder how I'd get a custom rattle can of nitro made up though? A bridge will be the next purchase at the end of the month, so I can line up before painting.
Hello everybody, I am *very* new to playing Bass, but I really love it and try to practice as much as possible. I have an Aria pro II STB Jazz. If anyone has any advice, that would be very much appreciated.
Hi, In Cornwall too. Living in Lostwithiel at the moment but I'm a St Austell boy. Advice? Sell the Aria and buy a Fender. (That was a little forum in-joke) What do you need advice on? If it's playing or gear, gigs or recording you are in the right place. Lots of useful opinions on here!

To the OP- It's not always just second-hand prices. I'm having my Bravewood '57 style P bass built at a estimate of around £1500. That's a genuinely hand-made bass coming in at two-thirds the price of a Fender Custom Shop, for which the parts are still mostly off the shelf, and significantly lower than Masterbuilt prices.
