Frozen Let It Go...oodles of thirds over the bass line...normal?
cameltoe replied to iconic's topic in Theory and Technique
Have a go at 'Love is an Open Door'. Cool bassline in that one! I have sat down and ploughed through it a couple times, a bit jerky so would like to get it smoother, as it's a very smooth sounding technique, whoever the guy is. My daughter loves Frozen too. -
Sourced myself a pillar drill, so the next job will be plugging the body. Have a trade pending on a set of pickups too. In my Colours thread I mentioned a solid grey, military-like colour. Wondering how this would look as I've not seen a solid grey on a fender before and I think it could work. I have seen a Fiat colour, there is also an Audi colour called Nimbus Grey which I quite like;

His DIY tele headstocks crack me up. How much is a decent jigsaw these days? He looks like he's using a hacksaw on them.

He's wound it down quite a bit from his last description, and taken the price down! It was up for £750!! http://basschat.co.uk/topic/265898-nice-description-what-a-load-of-old-tosh/page__fromsearch__1

For sale or trade. Trade options: Decent Jazz bass pickups Jazz bass pickguard Decent quality Fender-style tuners, or aftermarket jobbies such as hipshot ultralites. 11/16" peg diameter. Fender 4-string bridge- EITHER- vintage reissue with threaded saddles or modern string-thru high mass bridge. VFE Triumvirate Version 2 of the pedal, including internal trimpot for high-band and LED. Very good order, 9.5/10 with some velcro on the bottom. This is not the bass specific version, but this works very well for bass- has an insane amount of low end, almost sub frequency, and the reason they created a bass version in the first place is because bassists were using the guitar version! Separate level and drive for bass, mid and treble, so you can really dial in your tone. Very versatile. V2 version out of stock everywhere but around £140 new. I have misplaced the box, so will send well packed and forward the box when/if I locate it. Only selling as it doesn't fit my folk rock band, when I was just after a bit of edge to my tone. This thing would suit hard rock/metal and really thumps. £50 firm or willing to trade with cash either way on any of the above. Thanks, Will image by William Chesterfield, on Flickr

Hello all, I'm embarking on a stack knob Jazz build and thought i'd document it here! The inspiration? Gas. And that I had a Jazz neck lying around. So far I've collected a Basswood body, and stack knob control plates and knobs from obbm. Annoyingly, the neck holes in the basswood body will need to be filled and redrilled, as they are way out of line. The body is actually quite good, with a very tight fitting neck pocket, but the contours are more chunky and modern than I'd like, so with a bit of hand sanding I'm hoping to take these back to vintage spec deep contours. Why basswood? Well I've always liked the way basswood bodies tend to sound (if you buy into that), the expense, and that they come in fairly light. Alder can vary massively and I wanted this bass to come in at a good weight. So, my shopping list for the next few months looks like this: Bridge (either vintage, or maybe a more modern string-thru? haven't decided yet.) Vintagey sounding pickups Decent tuners Pickguard 'F' logo bridge cover KiOgon stack knob wiring loom, with earth strap Strap pins I need to decide on a colour (see my other thread here http://basschat.co.u...b-jazz-colours/) but I'm leaning in the direction of a 60's blue, aged white (banana), capri orange, or perhaps an original colour scheme- I'm digging the Fiat colour Tech House grey. This is the body, with wonky holes image by William Chesterfield, on Flickr image by William Chesterfield, on Flickr This is the neck. It is a 2010 Jazz neck from a 60's reissue 'Classic Series' MIM. A decent neck. I've had it lying around for a bit, and have worked on it to make it look a bit more roadworn. I stripped the heavy poly finish and rubbed the back down with danish oil, which feels lovely and also makes it look a bit worn. I've heavily rolled the fingerboard edges and taken the fret edges in bit, to make it feel well played. I'll document my plugging and redrilling of the neck holes when I can find a pillar drill to use!

Right guys, I'm turning this beast into a build thread. I've created a couple of Bitsa's over the years, but never documented them properly, and now i fancy it.

Loving these suggestions. Weirdly, I've had an urge to do a flat grey bass for a while, and had seen this colour on a car a while back, which I really like It's called Tech House Grey. Can you even paint a bass in automotive lacquer? Again I think this colour might lend itself more to maple fretboard and would look a bit heavy with rosewood. Whilst I'm on Fiat 500's, they do a pretty sweet mint green: A nice duck egg blue might work also.

Many, many have sought to find tonal heaven before realising it was staring them in the face all along. The P bass- when done well, there is nothing better. (IMO smiley)
Wow! That's some serious birdseye!
If there is one reason I've ever lusted after a Stingray, it's that ernie ball know how to make a good looking neck. That's on a par- is it a Custom Shop?

Pre-drilled holes for neck in body are wonky!
cameltoe replied to cameltoe's topic in Repairs and Technical
All great advice, thanks! Think I'll try for the pins/felt tip approach. I will have a look at measuring against a genuine F body with neck plate location, but if the neck pocket in my replica body is slightly deeper then presumably this will cock that all up! Re: scale length, the bridge holes aren't drilled. That's another job I'll have to do once I've mounted the neck. Expect to see a separate thread on that! -
Hi, Picked up a J body, in basswood. It's actually fairly decent, but they've completely lashed up drilling the neck holes in the body, to the point where it won't even accept a neck plate with all 4 screws (without trying to fit neck, just trying to get all 4 screws through the body!) Needless to say, it doesn't line up with the neck I'm planning to use. In fact none of the holes individually line up with any of the holes in the neck. Now, if the holes in the body had been fairly square, but they just didn't line up with the neck holes, I'd have filled the neck holes and re drilled the neck, but in this instance I'm going to have to redrill the body holes. I'm planning to dowel, glue and fill the holes before redrilling but my question is- will I need to also redrill the neck holes, or is there a way I can measure where the body holes need to be, so I can avoid this? The neck is genuine fender and all 4 holes are straight and true, but I can't figure out how to work out where the new holes in the body would need to be positioned to line up with them. Am I just going to have to do the neck as well? Thanks in advance

Any band is only as good as their rhythm section. Seriously. If Jeff Buckley's drummer had been sh1t no one would have batted an eyelid. And for the record- no ones listening!

Ever had a cheapo bass that you just keep going back to?
cameltoe replied to yondergo's topic in Bass Guitars
Squier Silver Series P bass I bought from here in May. Had previously owned a Silver J bass, but the ceramic pickups made it difficult to use as they were so uneven in volume. Traded it on. Great player though so swore I'd get a P one day. The only things I can fault with this bass were the weak pickups (sorted now), the fact I'd prefer a 7.25 radius, and that the contours are a little bulky compared to the vintage deep ones I like. Other than that, it's light, incredibly well put together, and plays great. Oh and the bridge screws are a little long. I'd say these basses are easily worth the £300 they go for on eBay with no hesitation and having played MIJ and CIJ fenders, this is right up there. -

Awwww yeah!! Really works with the maple though. Not sure rosewood would be as good.

Good suggestions guys! There is a stack knob jazz in the Show is yer limelight thread that I love- in Orange! It's fantastic but it has a maple neck. I fear it wouldn't look as good with Rosewood. I can't post the pic here as BC won't allow it.

Bought a stack knob jazz set up off Dave, paid him and it turned up the next day. Also had a nice chat. Great bloke.
I've got an ocean turquoise/white pick guard/rosewood board model. It's a fender Japanese '62 reissue with chrome stack knobs. Very nice.
Pics!! Never heard of ocean turquoise!

Let's get this out of the way- I don't play Jazz basses. I'm a P player through and through. However, over a year ago I acquired a decent Jazz neck which I intended to use on a JV P bass on which I'd snapped the truss. Long story short, I fixed the truss, so the neck then became obsolete. Fast forward to now, and I have weirdly and suddenly developed jazz bass gas. Knowing I have this neck to use has led me on a mission to gather the rest of the parts needed to make a killer Jazz bass. I know I want it to be a stack knob (which thanks to obbm it will be), but I'm stuck on the colour. I've ruled out Fiesta Red and Sunburst, and I'm a big fan of the funky sixties colours like Daphne, Seafoam etc, but I'd like BC'ers options on the best stack knob/rosewood Jazz colour choices!! Post your faves please, so I can get this project started. Cheers!
