1. Here's some ideas based on what I've played in similar bands! Modern: Molly's Chambers-KOL Go with the Flow/Lost Art of keeping a secret- QOTSA Hero/Everlong- Foo Fighters Mountain at my gates- Foals (current!) Seven Nation Army- White Stripes Cochise-Audioslave Steady as she goes-Raconteurs Kelly Affair-Be your own pet (fun song) Even Flow-Pearl Jam Ruby/ Love's not a competition- Kaiser Chiefs Classics: Sanctuary-The Cult Get It On/20th Century Boy- T Rex Should I Stay or should I Go- The Clash Pretty Vacant-Sex Pistols Folsom Prison- Johnny Cash For What it's worth- Buffalo Springfield Come Together- Beatles All Over Now- Stones I can't explain- The Who Rock n Roll- Led Zep Have Love, Will Travel- Sonics Tush- ZZ Top Waiting for the man- Velvet Underground Stop Me- Smiths
2. Reef- Replenish Before all the place your hands rubbish, this was a proper riff rock album which sounded vintage and new at the same time. RHCP-One Hot Minute Blood Sugar gets all the attention, but I'm really fond of this album. Quirky with some great pop songs and just enough of the old chili's still in there.
3. Mine is a 2008, they are incredible. And very light! I've not heard of the first series being more sought after, but I have picked up a couple of later models and I didn't like them as much as mine.
4. Great price, for one of the best looking limelights i've seen!
5. This is what I hate about weddings. We play in a folk rock band, (think Pogues, Flogging Molly, etc) and people will come see us, love it, and book us for their wedding. Out of nowhere, they will then ask us as part of the set, to play (real individual examples); A Bryan Adams song A Stereophonics song A Guns and Roses song Sweet Home Alabama An Adele song The Final Countdown A Will Young song Plus many more songs that I can't remember off the top of my head.
6.
Scored myself a CV jazz the other day, not had a CV before and it feels very different from my other Squiers.....
How so? Better or worse? What are your other squiers?
7.
Think you answer a lot of the questions here C, if I'd had £1500 I might have gone for a Bravewood but it was more than I wanted to pay for a fashion statement/foray into relics. As it is the bass has surprised me, and a few bassist friends regarding it's playability and sound. The stock parts suit me fine so paying a lot more for more period correct stuff like the fretboard radius would have been wasted on me (my current basses are all over the place on radius/width so it doesn't really bother me). On the Numbers coming into the market place I can only think it's the normal 'emperor's new clothes' jobbie, and People buying on a whim and repenting at leisure.
I think you're right, my initial foray into relics was more to do with feel and playability though- as a fashion statement I couldn't care less, but having played a worn-in feeling Fender bass for me, there was no way back. In Bravewood I can get a local builder (Cornwall) to make me the exact spec I require, from a few bits of wood exactly as Leo would have done, which represents better value for money for me personally than a Limelight. The other thing which put me off, so to speak, is knowing I could attempt to assemble a bass from the same parts as Limelight and finish myself to save costs. I couldn't do that with a Bravewood. On the whole though, I think they represent amazing value for money considering what you get. I trust in my fellow basschatters that they feel as good as they look.
8. The idea of a custom build for the price is the attraction I think, but I have questioned like DarkHeart (and asked, actually) how come so many are coming back onto the marketplace, often very quickly, after such glowing feedback. I do believe from the reviews I've read and the pictures I've seen that the basses are fantastic and being the owner of a Roadworn P, I know how good these fender instruments can feel when they are 'worn-in'. Needless to say though they are 'parts' basses so options are limited- if Mark could have supplied me with vintage correct 7.25" fretboard radius and my preferred nut width I may have been tempted. As it is, I'm paying several hundred pounds more to have the exact spec I want from Bravewood, where the bass will be built entirely from scratch and local to me.
9.
Is it too early to mention Nicki Minaj?
It's never too early for that. She featured as the answer to 'who would you most like to spend one night with?' in a boyfriend/girlfriend quiz on my now-wife's hen night. Needless to say, lead balloon.
10. Don't ask him what Jack White's beef is! Do ask him if he has plans to do another Blakroc album.
11. 885
12. I would go used, and try and pick up two active 12's and a small desk. There was a decent little Mackie one on the marketplace recently.
13. Good price! This won't be here long.
14. Unbass prices have been high for a while. I had one and sold it because I hated it!
15. Nope. I had a Wizard Thumper (old company-same p'up) and it had perfect bite and output for my needs. Compared to my Roadworn P bass, (which Fender say uses a U.S. Standard pickup- I emailed them and asked) it had slightly more of both. It should have plenty of heft with a nice thump and a touch of grit. Either it's wired up wrong or the pickup is defective. Maybe try and measure the output if you have a meter?
16. Damn.... love it!
17. I want you back by Jackson 5
18.
Yeah, you're not wrong. Did you adjust your truss rod at all?
Probably. I have a pretty good eye for the kind of relief I like to see so if this was increased by the BT's I would have countered it with a tweak.
19.
I'm having this problem at the moment, and all I did qas change my strings. My bass is all rattley and my left hand seems to have lost most of its dexterity. The gauge is more or less the same, but I"ve gone from Dunlop Super Brights to D"Addario Balanced Tension, and my playing has just.....gone....
BT's are a stiffer feeling string, the benefit being you have a more consistent feel across all strings and in some cases allows you to set the action a touch lower. My instruments definitely required the action to be tweaked with the BT's so maybe a set up is in order?
20.
I'll put some pics up tomorrow. But meanwhile, heres a stock picture.
I thought the Nate Mendel had a 70's TV logo? I'm glad someone else is as happy using BBOT bridges as I am, can't go wrong! Happy NBD!
21. Very good build quality and feel, but do try a Roadworn if you get the chance. A completely different feeling instrument.
22. It's like these people have never seen Spinal Tap.
23.
Hi Gadgie, I found it hard not to comment on this thread as I own both a Bravewood and a Limelight so will try to give some feedback on both. The Bravewood is actually a Stratocaster guitar and not a bass as I have a regular weekly gig in a working soul band so it gets quite a lot of use. I also didn’t order it specially, it just appeared on the Bravewood site in early 2014 so I snapped it up as I needed a guitar fairly quickly. I think it may have been either an uncollected/cancelled order or maybe he builds a model of his own choosing during quiet times? However, how glad I am that I did buy it! It is hands down the best “stratocaster” I have ever played. As far as I can tell, it is pretty close to an original-spec early 60s strat except for the addition of a slightly flatter radius fretboard, two-way truss rod and more modern Dunlop 6105 frets. The aging looks convincing though I probably would have ordered something a little less extreme but this isn’t a deal breaker. The main thing is the feel of the guitar. From day one, it just felt “right” to me. Considering the equivalent model would cost £3k+ from the big F, I think it’s also very good VFM. I think a special ordered Bravewood is around the £1600 mark but I could be wrong and remember these are made from “scratch” and not generic parts as would a similar priced “Nash Guitar” be. As for the limelight, I wanted a “Jamerson-type” spec P Bass and my Black/Tort 1963 RI was for sale on the limelight site. Again, a lovely bit of kit. The finish is much thinner on the Limelight than the Bravewood and he has obviously used a different process for the “ageing”. Limelights are made from Fender-licensed parts and I think maybe some of them are made “upcycled” bodies/necks from older guitars but I cannot be sure of this. The only thing I didn’t like about the Limelight was that the bridge/saddles were too tarnished for my liking and they were difficult to adjust resulting in one or two shearing off. In the end, I replaced all of them with brass replacements at a cost of about £10 so not a problem at all! I think the limelight is potentially my favourite bass – at least when I eventually find the “right” flatwound strings for my liking! As a side note: I’m thinking of trying La Bella Deep Talkin’ Flats next so any advice on these from anyone reading would be much appreciated! Pound for pound, the Bravewood I think has the edge on quality/build etc but then it is twice the price of the Limelight. Both are fantastic instruments and IMHO both are worth the cost so it’s down to how much you want to pay! I have no intention of selling either! In regards to re-sale value: I can imagine that, to the right people (i.e. those “in the know” on forums such as this or “The Fretboard” etc ) both Bravewood and Limleight will have good re-sale value but on the street or EvilBay, gumtree etc, most regular punters will simply see these as “Fakes” and want the “Real Thing”. But then, we all “know”…….don’t we? Cheers, Steve
Good to know but seriously- pics!
24.
I,ve never heard anybody say that an Orange Terror bass is short in the underpants department. I use a SP212 cab isobaric and it carries and slams no problem.
I clicked on this thread to leave the same comment. I have heard people describe class D as lacking weight or heft in the sound, but the OBT has it in spades. This thing defies the class D myth, if it exists at all. Great amps, loads of punch and meat to the sound. The downside is they are not the most versatile amp and I would recommend swapping the ECC83's for some NOS 81's.
