Effing Ebay..... sent me the wrong size tuners....
cameltoe replied to cameltoe's topic in Repairs and Technical
I've got a feeling from vague bits and pieces I read online that 'Vintage' tuners are slightly bigger than modern. I've got a CV Squier, (currently being set up.....taking ages!) that I'll try the hipshot's on and see how good a fit they are on there. I've just ordered some Gotoh gbr640, which although aren't quite as light as the hipshots(not far off), should (by looking at their measurements) be indentical to the standard ones in my Road Worn. The hipshot ultralites were/are used on the most recent Fender Deluxe basses, so I think they must fit properly in modern series basses. There's too much play in my bass though, the sleeves are not tight in the headstock hole, they'll never stay in tune. Both sets were around $100 with $17 shipping. About £80 all in. -
I played a Vintage one that was sub £200 that seemed nice. I know you say don't mention Olp but they come up often enough on here & are nice for the money too
The only reason I didn't want them mentioned is because I've read a lot about them, and too often the second hand prices are inflated. If I could pick one up for the money I'm hoping to spend, I'd love to have one. The vintage copies look the real deal (bar the headstock). Not played one though
Where abouts are you cameltoe? Do you have anything nice we could do a temporary swap with for a few weeks? Im in Staffs not Button moon!
I have some nice gear, but I'm in Cornwall, so might as well be button moon!
Id save for the real thing. Try and find a mint second hand one. Trust me, they are worth it
You've got three! No need to be greedy. I just would like to get a good idea of what a Stingray is all about, before I give up my hard-earned. I've seen good ones on here for about £750, and I'd be well up for spending that on a nice one (pref. black/maple ), but at this point in time, I don't know if I'd even get on with it, whether it would sound right, or whether it would feel natural for me to play. The only other option, is to find someone who's willing to lend me one for a few weeks. I might be selling my Ashdown Little Bastard soon if the Orange bass terror I've got coming does a similar job. That should free up some cash. Seems a shame not to spend money from the sale of old gear on new gear.

I've been gassing for a stingray for a while, and although I'd love to take the plunge and just buy a second hand one (given that 2nd hand prices are very generous) I've only ever played one for about 2 minutes, unplugged. Plus I'm about to move house, have just paid for a new amp head, new tuners, and got a new Precision only a couple of months back. So, I was looking for any recommendations on Stingray copies, which can give me most of the experience of owning a Stingray, at nowhere near the cost. I'm not talking £400 SUB's, more like £200 brand-new, might find one on ebay for £100 used-type prices. A while back I passed up an OLP for £80 because I didn't have the cash, I wish I hadn't now, as they seem to be considered the best cheap copies, so far as I've read. However, even 2nd hand I've seen these fetch almost £200, because of the rave reviews I guess. This, again, is probably going to be too much. I can always chuck a Stingray P'up in to try and get a more authentic sound, but I'm hoping to find a copy that has a very similar 'feel' to a 'Ray, so in the future, if I'm considering buying one on a whim I will at least know what it's going to be like!
Cheers mate, God knows we sacrifice a lot chasing dreams! Give a guess how much my old band got when we supported My Chemical Romance when their album was #1 in the UK charts- and we were their only opening act........ £50 a night - not each - thats £50 for the whole band!!!!!!!! -a night When we questioned this the promoter (our contact at SJM Concerts) said that we should be happy because we beat plenty of bands that were offering thousands to do the tour. I often wonder if he was pocketing something???? although I have heard many similar stories on the road!!
!!!!!!!! £50 !!!!!!!!! Someone was pocketing some serious cash somewhere! Seriously, what a player You're the person I was supposed to become -

I'm about to receive one and very excited about it. I currently have an Ashdown Little Bastard, which has no gain control and is very gritty, and solved the problem here by changing the preamp valves from ECC83's to ECC81's, which lowered the gain. If the Orange proves a bit drivey for me (I really don't think it will) I'll swap the valves over for ECC81's An idea for you though, if you don't want a griity sound.

I wanted to solve neck dive on my Road Worn P bass, so I ordered some hipshot ultralites from the US. Obviously there are a couple different sizes made, the biggest size hipshot make are 1/2", with 3/8 being the next size down. I knew that one of these sizes was a direct fender replacement, so I checked my tuners and the peg looked to be around 1/2". I ended up ordering some that were advertised as a direct replacement for Fender J/P basses. They're too small! Exactly 1/2" peg, whereas on reflection mine are a bit wider. just a slight touch bigger, like 11.5mm to 13mm. Being a Road Worn, and hence using vintage-style hardware, would the tuners be a vintage size, which (possibly) were slightly bigger than modern P bass tuner sizes? The standard ones on my bass are reverse tuners. Or have Fender basses always used them same size tuners? If so, I can give them a hard time about it and try and get my money back. If not, does anybody want to buy some 1/2" Ultralites?

String Thru conversion- Best (and cheapest) bridge to get?
cameltoe replied to cameltoe's topic in Repairs and Technical
Can anyone point me in the direction of where to get a standard Fender fitment bridge that allows for string-through? Most of the ones I've seen on ebay don't look like they cater for it. Cheers -
The Gotoh tuners weigh 62g each. The Gotoh bushes and screws weigh about 35g a set. I had my set forwarded via a US mail forwarding company and did not pay duty/tax. If you import direct you probably will.
Good man, cheers.
Why would you lose money everytime you played a vintage Fender?
Really? Ok, you play it a few times..... Oh where did that ding come from? It was mint before. Big wedge off the value for that. Get it refinished? Forget it, you'll lose even more money. Play it a bit more.......Oh it's stopped working. Turns out a piece of solder has broken in the electrics and it will need resoldering. There's another wedge off the value right there. If I bought a vintage fender where money was no object, it would lose value just by me looking at it. I'd be scared to take it out of the case.

It seems the Hipshot ultralites are not as light as they claim if you plump for Clover-leaf style, and 1/2" size. They are more like 57 grams then. Gotoh it is then. Contacted domo_intl, and waiting for him to set something up. BB2000 did you get stung for import tax? Any chance of this happening?

If I had a big budget for a bass I'd want a custom build. Shuker, 33" scale, Vintage Precision bass profile neck but just a wee bit thinner front to back, made to be perfectly balanced, maple neck and headstock, either black/sonic blue/candy cola red nitro body, passive electrics, P/J pickup configuration, and the body shaped on either a Jazz bass or a Precision bass. Can't decide on that one. I'd love a vintage Fender, but I'd be afraid of all the money I was losing everytime I played it. Maybe a Nash Precision in that case. Or a Squier Classic Vibe

Me too No problem, I'm still trying to work out which tuners are the best to go for. I've seen that Fender do their own Lightweight Vintage tuners now (probably made by Schaller), and I've also noticed that when removing a tuner from the headstock I already have the two countersunk button holes pre-drilled to allow for lightweight tuners.
Yes, I'd also like to keep the original appearance (excluding the finish !) of my Roadworn P too. If the Gotoh's are significantly lighter, I'd pay the extra, as the bass is worth it (to me at least) T
That's the thing, I'm trying to get a definitive answer of how heavy the Gotoh's are. If the bare tuner is 64 grams that'll take about 40gram off each tuner, not accounting for the fact the sleeves and screws may be lighter also. Looking just at that, I'd save 160 grams from the headstock. Taking two tuners out saved me 210 grams and was about enough. Would 160 grams do it? Hmmm. If the Hipshot bare tuner weight is 47grams, going by what I can find online, I'd be saving 232 grams from the headstock, again not accounting they may come with lighter sleeves and screws. This would solve the problem. And they are a fair bit cheaper. But as you say, it'd be nice to have standard-look tuners. The hipshots do look dreadful. Plus the Gotoh's come in reverse, to retain originality. You'd never need to take them off again.
Try domo_intl on ebay (US) if you go for the GB640 ones. He will create an ebay BIN listing for you if he does not currently have any listed. I have a set on my AV62.
Thanks dude I think I may do this. Any chance you can do me a huge favour and take one out to see what it weighs? (On it's own, and with sleeves and screws) I'll know for sure how much weight I'll be saving then. No worries if not. If I decide to plump for the Gotoh's, do you want to come in on the order to save on postage essexbasscat?
Did you find out what the Gotoh's weight ? are they an exact replacement ? (but just look new!) T
Exact replacement, 64 grams each, although this doesn't state whether they include sleeves, etc. The hipshots come in at 47grams, but that's the bare tuner. Some sources online from the info I've dug around for say the Gotoh's are lighter than the Hipshots, but the Hipshots are so damn small, I wouldn't be surprised if they were a bit lighter. The Gotoh's will fit, exactly, in the place of the Fender tuners, whereas the Hipshots will look a bit crap, but the Hipshots are cheaper, (£90 to £130) and could be lighter. I'd normally just plump for the Hipshots, but I'd really like a set of tuners that don't look crap.
