question from a tube initiate, why isnt my little bastard breaking up!
cameltoe replied to cycrowave's topic in Amps and Cabs
Yeah, there must be something wrong somewhere. The LB should break up very, very easily. It should allow slightly more output from the 'high' input, which is for passive basses, but the 'low' input, which I use, breaks up at around 1/3 on the output, using a Precision bass. Hmmm. I'd try it with a different bass first and foremost, then I'd ring Ashdown. It hasn't had less gainy preamp tubes installed has it? -
Ok, REALLY pop, but I was in the Gym the other day and this came on the TV. Click Thought the bass line was pretty cool, with some funky slides. Stays nicely where it is and doesn't overpower the song, but really the song wouldn't have much melody without it.

Hollow wooden stages make anything boom.... isn't it called 'speaker coupling' or something? I've had it a few times, and I really notice it if I'm using slightly older strings, and I often have to faff, for ages, with the EQ to get a tight sound. A grammapad might be worth investing in as well! cheers for info!

Hi all, I recently purchased one of the UK built Ashdown Little Bastards. It's great! I can gig it, provided we're not too loud- which if the pub is slightly large and carpeted, and it fills up with punters we usually are. I need to run it as loud as it will go-just before break up- to keep up even at the smaller gigs, but it's been fun to use and I've got a good idea of the venues I can and can't use it at. Along with the LB head I also bought an LB Cab, the 2x12 (4-ohm) model. I have a few combo amps which are taking up space around the house, so I figured rather than having a bunch of combos for all different situations, maybe I should buy another, louder, head to use at the bigger gigs. I love the look of the Orange Bass Terror, and like the idea of a small and portable head. I'm also growing fond of the sound of valves, and with the all-valve preamp in these I've read they do the Valve tone fairly well. I've also heard they are really loud! The only criticism I've read is that they are a bit too boomy. I don't mind boom and vintage furriness- even if I found this was a problem surely a switch to ECC81 valves should do the trick? My budget stretches only to what I could hopefully pick one of these up for second-hand. Around £375 or so. But I've never tried one, so I'd like some advice. Also who to get a second hand one from! Should I also be considering a Little Mark? Used ones are around the same price. Cheers

Monday and Tuesday. Two different bands, although we don't practice very often in the tuesday band. I just wish the Monday band would turn down a bit. We rehearse everything at full-on gig volume. All originals. So I get a "Here is my new song" and then I try my hardest to hear what the hell he's playing, and whether I'm playing in the right key or not, and generally I get it ass about face. Really not good for tightening up. Damn Guitards!

I don't know if your money has to be in the paypal account to have it refunded does it? If he's set up his bank account to paypal they'll just swipe it straight out of that. I think they can track you down if you empty and even cancel your account too- they'll pay the refund and then set the collectors on you to get it back. The ebay rules are clear, and when I've had disputes in the past it's the ebay rules they adhere to rather than the law, weirdly. If the ebay rules state the P&P charges must be reasonable, and you prove he's charged you £200 but only used a service that cost £13, I'd be amazed if paypal and ebay didn't side with you, especially considering his sole purpose of doing this was to avoid ebay fees. Hmm.... at worst you'll end up with a VM squier for £200.99 I'd be tempted to try it..... and if you've already got the bass and Paypal have access to his funds then you won't even have to get involved in the legality of it.

Can you not buy it and pay, wait for it to arrive, and then dispute it through paypal and get the postage back? Claim you never realised, just looked at the total cost. I don't see how they won't refund it, if he's only paid £13 to post it.

OK no photo's at the moment, but this can be rectified on request. First up- Nobels Bass Overdrive- Rare pedal, the Phase 1 model in surf green. Highly regarded OD pedal than can do light grit or full on droney fuzz. Look it up online. Has a DEEP dial that you can tweak to bring about lots of lovely low end, as well as a basic EQ on the pedal. Took me ages to find this pedal. Works perfect, although I managed to break a wire on the battery terminal thing. If you want to power this pedal with a battery I'll fix it. If you're not bothered I'll leave it. No box. £35 + P&P Behringer DC9 Compression- Great little black compression pedal with cool blue LED. Very good condition, barely used. No box. MXR-dynacomp clone, even in looks. Great review of the pedal Here. Cheapest I can find is about £23, not including delivery. No box. £12 + P&P

Why do you have to be so far away? I could do you a straight swap on a Hartke VX3500 combo plus a Classic Vibe 50's Precision. I also have a Trace Elliot GP7 SM 150w combo here if you didn't want the Hartke. I'd throw some pedals (or cash) in as well then. Can you not blag someone to drive you to Exeter?
Just used the LB at church tonight. Really loved the sound. Looks like its definitely a keeper Really useful having a low powered all valve head as the Hiwatt is big and heavy and its volume is not always needed
I used mine last night at a decent sized pub gig. Coped fine. I had to run it up to break up point where it's loudest (which is only about 4 on the output, pesky gainy preamp valves) but we are a fairly loud 5 piece, and the pub was a decent size and packed out. It coped well, but some headroom would be nice. it sounds AMAZING! I'm in love with Valves.

This is terrible. Always one of the first posters whenever I needed advice, and helped me out loads with our band's myspace page. Always had a nice selection of Jap P basses for sale too which gave me GAS whenever I saw him post. He will be missed here. RIP.
Have a bump on me for an amazing amp. I changed the valves over to new old stock 1960's preamp valves and put in some Harma EL84s. Audio heaven.
What difference has this made to the tone? I love the basic tone of the amp, but don't like it when it starts to break up. Any info here would be great.
And that is the honest answer I got. Thanks guys fork eepin me str8
I have gigged mine in a 5 piece band, in a medium sized venue which was packed. It kept up.
I have tried the Road Worns - both the P and the J. I bought a Red RW Jazz late last year - but sold it to buy a new USA Black/Maple. The Road Worns are very good, but FATALLY, they don't have string thru body. That is essential on a Fender P or J. I have tried many without, and you don't get the same sustain and the sound is very slightly harsher. ALL of the P basses I have tried without string thru miss a little bit of the lows. The Road Worn guitars, on the other hand, are very good - I have a 50s Strat and have just bought a new 72 Tele Road Worn Custom. The guitars hold up very well against my USA Strat. You just can't beat a good USA Jazz or P Bass. But that's just my opinion.
I wouldn't take a new USA over my Road Worn, no chance, I love the way it feels. It's ALL about the feel to me. Having said that, from my limited time with trying USA Precisions, (and not having owned one) I've not been able to grumble about the lack of string thru body from the Precisions I've had in the past. I've always wondered what difference this would make though (even going so far as to get a quote from a luthier once for having a Mexican modified in this way. £100, if you're interested). I guess I've not heard the differences you hear, but I guess that would change if I ever owned one and played it in a band situation, where most things tend to become apparent. A USA precision is on my GAS list, and I guess if I do eventually get to own one, it would be nice to know the extra cost is justified.

I can do. I have the classic 50's and it's very light indeed

Just got back from a holiday in Barcelona, where one night we decided to enter a little cavern club hosting a jam night. All good music, really laid back Jazz and lots of good players. The bassist in particular was very good. After every song the chubby host insisted on introducing every member of the band, so over and over I heard the words 'and on bass, the hardest working man in show business.......Gary Willis!' I've sinced looked him up, quite a high profile player! Luckily, I didn't drunkenly wander over to him and start talking bass nonsense. I possibly would have, if my missus hadn't had a strop on that night (cos I made her go to a jam night). I would have looked like a bit of a tit I reckon.
