There seems to be two "first bass" threads going at the mo, tho this one has much more traffic. I had a look round on the internet at cheap 70s jap basses, and found this, which is pretty much exactly the first thing I had. As mentioned in the other one, I've absolutely no recollection of what became of it unfortunately, knowing me I likely swapped it for something or other. I continued after this with a borrowed bass for a bit, and subsequently bought a slightly better P bass copy.

Don't these effectively have frets, also made of gut ( or other string material) that are tied around the neck in the appropriate positions.. ?

Don't know if it constitutes "learning" but I was messing about with the "Dr Who" theme last night.. Much entertainment trying various daft "FX" ..

Interesting fact.....Apparently Hitler's party number was 555, not no.1 as you'd expect. This was in fact a phoney ( surprise, surprise !) as they started numbering from 500 to make themselves appear to be a larger party initially. He was still only member 55 though... Not that there's any similarities between our Greek friend above and Hitler of course !

A rather later, but interesting, offering from XTC. banned by the Yanks from MTV apparently ...

P Bass Scratchplate - Template Help
Waddo Soqable replied to PaulThePlug's topic in Repairs and Technical
Just a thought, blow up an image off t'internet to real size, and trace off the screen? I did this with a couple of headstock shapes. -
I guess most of us that started in the 70s had a variant of the short scale Jap / Woolworths crap things, mine was a nasty red/black 'burst' single PU effort with a neck from that funny mid brown grainy wood stuff ! It was only used by me once for any kind of live performance, I subsequently borrowed a quite decent Jazz copy from a mate, and was well annoyed when he wanted it back ..in fact having looked on t'internet at 70s junk basses....this is pretty much the one I had, but I don't seem to remember the scratchplate being at a wonky angle like that.. Then again it was 45 years ago or something! ..if you took the ashtray off as I recall there was a very nasty sharp metal bracket thing sticking up, just for you to rip your hand to shreds on... I've no idea what became of it, I probably just swapped it for something random I expect..

Probably could've done yesterday ! Too much else been thru the brain since then.. Now if I'd had a ratty acoustic bass in the motor I could've grabbed the bass line at least.

Only kind of 'put my head round the corner' of basschat for a couple of days so still got a bunch of these to catch up with...! ps I was out and about yesterday and these kids were playing a really awesome tune ( reggae obviously) and I've no clue what it was... and i didn't have the chance to ask em. Really frustrating those that get away from you like that, it was a real bangin tune too.

Looks like I've got a few to go thru again, when I've got an hour or so free ! 👍

The first ever bass I owned was a rather simplfied version of this, the pickguard was one piece black and didn't have the top section on the " upper horn". It was in a crude 2 colour red to black "sunburst" and the PUs looked plainer.. I think it appeared only once in public performance with our improvised punk "ensemble" I swapped it with someone for a plastic clarinet that I had, they most certainly got the better deal ..

I forgot a name, you can call it Orchestral Piece 4 if you like.. ( Takt 8 is not it's name but the name I gave the SC channel incidentally ) it's very Lo-Fi I'm afraid, as it was created on a £10 keyboard from a boot fair and I preferred the rough version anyway ( plus I've resisted slapping loads of 'lush' effects on it )

Boxing gloves are good for that, plus they can use up their surplus energy belting each other.. It's a win -win..

NABD - New Acoustic Bass Day - Harley Benton HBO850
Waddo Soqable replied to PaulThePlug's topic in Bass Guitars
That's a result then.. easier than having to laboriously file a bit off the bottom of the bridge ( and then find you've hacked too much off) ps.. No one listens to the bass in metal.. -
I've certainly been pleased with mine ! Just a thought, there was someone on here very recently selling one for £40 posted if you've not ordered it yet may be worth a look
