Never been keen on the poke a pick down the scratchplate business, often leaves a wonky scratchplate after a while. Not done any nudist gigs so I've always got a pocket somewhere 😁

If I want a really deep bassy dub type tone, I use the thumb, kind of tug bar style

Another mainly pick bloke, I've not found any great difference when swapping to fingers for an odd song or section of, certainly never needed to change vol or tone. Pick used is always JD grey .73

That's the thing, if you listen to a lot of isolated bass tracks by "famous" names / bands they often sound a bit rubbish, it's just a raw signal as far as the engineer / producer is concerned, a bit like some very rough sketching on a canvas that becomes a painting, after much work and re touching. Always interesting to listen to this stuff tho I bet many vocal performances are cringe worthy before the application of the various magic sponges...

That's kind of pretty much what I do too, with emphasis on stuff I've made up.. I'm not involved in anything that requires me to do covers these days so I'd only suss out an existing song thats "out in the world" if I fancied it for a bit of fun or whatever. Of course with original stuff the tricky part is creating a cohesive whole piece from the bits, it's very easy to knock out loads of cool riffs all day, but making them into something is more like work !
