My days of playing sax in bands was going back to the late 70s, and no doubt things have moved on, but wouldn't think you'd need a dedicated amp set up? I tried at the time one of those barcus berry "bug" things attached to the reed, and wired into the PA, in the end I didn't much like it, it was very shrill & clattery sounding, so I went back to just playing into a mic thru the PA which was good enough and what most people did.. (despite sax being a bit rare in bands at that time😁)

On a slight tangent, doesn't the bloke from The Fortunes play an upside down bass with the strings still the "wrong way round"?

Mate, change the strings over and flip it.... ( you might have to buy a cheapo little file or hacksaw blade for the nut from Toolstation or something too...)

Assuming the shop's busy-ish.. You could always ask to try the bass of your choice, then subtly meander towards the door... And do a runner..

Well you pays your 300 squid and you takes your choice! As per the original question if I had to schlepp down the shops reasonably available to me, and buy a bass to gig tonight, I'd still grab a Squier and crack on with it 😁

If its got to be bought over the counter it's also going to depend where you physically are. If you are near somewhere like GAK or G4M you'll have a fairly wide choice
