Nice one guys 👍.. looks like a viable goer then.. I've got a couple of lengths 99cm long by 65mm wide 24mm deep, plus a longer bit that's not as deep, maybe fretboard potential? The first two lumps I'd assume to be gluing together along the edge for the basic neck. I don't have power planers or bandsaws or anything, I'd have to hand plane all this, I do have some old Record planes inc a longish one to straighten the joins up. The first act will be to join those bits I guess.

I've acquired a few slim lengths of what I'm pretty sure is light coloured oak, it's from some "posh" but not antique office tables. For some insane reason I was toying with the idea of making a neck, from scratch, with these. Has anyone of the skilled builder fraternity ( unlike myself) manufactured a neck from oak? Or is it simply not suitable? My feeling would be it's OK, as it's a very hard robust wood, but..?

My "singing" is utter shlte, so other than the odd "Oi" or something, on rare occasions, I've stayed well clear.. I have the greatest respect for anyone who can sing and play a "proper" bass line simultaneously

The original Roxy Music, absolutely top stuff... Virginia Plain was one of the first singles I went out and bought with my own 50p pocket money, and even in the punk era, for some reason I always used to play it just before going out on our Sat. night "adventures".. like some little ritual.

By preference I'm a ( clangy and aggressive) pick player, but.. I will also use all sorts of finger or thumb playing methods for different sounds or whathaveyou. For a very Bassy sound I might use the soft side of the thumb 'tug bar' style kind of, I'd sometimes play with the forefinger and thumb together almost using an imaginary pick if that makes sense. I would sometimes use the thumb both ways in a strumming or flicking action.. It's very hard to describe stuff like this adequately.. Suffice to say, personally I don't just stick to one solitary "technique", I guess it's a case of experimenting with different things and see what you think works

I believe certain frequencies have been proven to have effects on the body, you can induce nausea for instance... but I'd expect you're looking at audio snake oil here..

I'd advise him to "jack it in" if I were you...

If you use wire wool btw, stick a load of masking tape over the PUs otherwise the inevitable tiny stray bits of steel wool will likely get stuck to the magnets

So an old P-bass scratchplate that someone's scribbled on with felt pen....?

You could even try some very very fine grade wire wool on the back of the neck, it would take the shine off, and arguably you could buff it back to a high polish later if you were flogging it... Just a thought

I'd say you'd certainly reduce it's resale value, but if it's a keeper and a practical player's instrument that you use.. then it's your call.
