Have to say I'm in the Fugly camp here, I always thought the "long horn" ones looked ridiculous, imho of course .

It's probably become a challenge now 😁

One of the few occasions I let some other band on the same bill use my bass amp, they somehow managed to blow the tweeter on a 600w 1x15 cab, as it happens I didn't miss it (and just pulled the wires off) but that's not the point. I'd absolutely never lend a bass guitar.

Is a new mass-produced bass ever worth more than £1500

Steady on.. If it was done with rabbit skin glue and egg tempera.... ( that'd be a bespoke artisan bass tho wouldn't it..) -
That's what I call ripping the plss....

They probably would, coz it sez 7ender you-ess-eh on the end 😁 -
The all nite bagel place in Brick Lane is I'm sure (hopefully!) still there. The tubby Isaacs seafood stall was good too but I don't think that's around anymore, likewise the old Pie 'n' Mash shops of which there were several in Bethnal Grn Rd. last time I looked there was one left..

I'm kind of making one. I got ( disassembled in bits) a MM US Sub which, as I'm sure you know, is effectively an American made Stingray with a slab body and crappy textured paint, and have currently as an experiment stuck a far east made Sub maple neck on it, ( jazz nut width as mentioned in the vid ) .. the neck that came with it I wasn't overly keen on, didn't like the width, profile, or anything really. Plus the crappy paint finish was damaged ( which I've now stripped btw).. I much prefer maple necks over r/w too, and the sterling Sub neck came up on the forum recently at a good price, so I snagged it for the purpose. Something I did find was that the neck's heel is about 3mm deeper than the original, and as a temp. bodge to try it, I've put shims under the bridge saddles, otherwise the saddle grub screws would be virtually out of their holes. If I go with this neck I'll plane the required amount off the bottom of the heel to the same dimensions as the original neck. I've strung it up and will play with it for a bit, and let the neck settle, if I like it I'll proceed as above. Obviously this version already has the pukka MM PU and pre amp so needs no further improvement in that dept. Here's an unfinished / work in progress rough pic..

Unless you've got untold amounts of ca$h to blow in one of the "vintage guitar" clip joints there's prob not much amusement to be had in London now. .. pity as it used to be great fun going in all the guitar shops trying out their stuff

I suspect there's not much left for our man from Dublin if he was to have a look down Charing Cross Road and Denmark St these days either

I last went in there maybe 2010 or something, it was pretty much just a bunch of basses hanging on the wall.. It was kind of weird as I recall you had to get buzzed in on the doorbell, but there was no one in the shop to meet you! I was just having a shufti really anyway, too pricy for me. .. It was quite handy that they dumped bass cardboard shipping boxes outside for the bins, which I snagged for posting a couple of times.

I'm fairly certain there's no bass shop up that way now unfortunately.

Honestly can't remember exactly, I'm thinking I went along Bishopsgate and it was up off some side street, they only did bass stuff.
-
I think it was off Bishopsgate somewhere? I remember going in there in the 90s possibly, i'm pretty sure that doesn't exist anymore

I wondered at the time tho, if they'd be problematic if you needed a re-fret or anything..? Again in hindsight another bass i shoulda hung on to!

I've only ever had one person come up to me afterwards and say "that's a really good bass sound you've got" and it turns out.. he was another bass player... I've had numerous say they like the "way I played" type thing... but that's more likely the whole "throwing shapes" performance malarkey rather than considered approval of what I actually played on the bass itself. The average punter probably doesn't know the difference between a bass and a guitar anyway. I'm firmly in the 50 to 200 quid brigade too.. I seem to make the same clanging racket on any bass, posh or not, so I'd certainly not splurge an absurd amount of dosh on one even if I could afford it ( which I can't ) -
Never knew they did kramer Ali necks as a fretless, unless someone just ground the frets down? I also recall you could pick a kramer up fairly cheap as many people didn't fancy them. My last hands on experience of them was in the early 80s, I've not seen one out in the wild for donkeys years.
