  1. Funnily enough as a youngster I played the saxophone before moving to bass...
  2. I had a 6 for a short while, a real cheapo just to see what they're like.. It sounded very good tone wise, active elecs and kind of emg style PUs, usual broad table of a neck etc, but played OK I guess. I soon got rid of it as for me it had no point really, I could do what I needed with a 4 and prefer the more "open spaces" of the regular 4 bass strings ( call me a stick in the mud but I wouldn't want a 5 either tbh) So I'd be an inverted Snob I guess
  3. And you're alive, even better still... 😁
  4. One thing I did, purely as a hired gun for about half a dozen gigs, required me to tune to a kind of drop C to fit with their existing music (it include synth tracks on a laptop too) this was on a normal 4 string bass, I only do 4 stringers so it was that or nowt.. It worked surprisingly well considering. If I'd been in the band ongoing I'd have probably sorted out some more suitable gauge strings or whatever
  5. I tried the drop in randomly approach but soon dropped out again after a few seconds of "guitaring" the alto player that showed up later was ok if a bit derivative. Can't say I'd describe any of it as "New Music"
  6. Anyway good plan to hit them with a good thumping refund figure to start negotiations with, I'm sure you'll end up scoring it for a decent price in the end, looks a great lil' bass too.. .... Shame you're not slicing it's head off tho! 😊
  7. With a big hammer...
  8. Thanks for the vote of confidence! πŸ‘ Certainly the initial "modification" process was a bit crude see old hunting knife and rough b'stard file.. but i did try to get it looking half way decent in the end.. Annoyingly, as I'm rubbish at spraying, I messed up paint finishing the newly done neck and had to strip it all off again and just go for a rough blow over with Halfords matt black As regards the 2 course mandola/ mandocello job, having seen the above vids I'm keen to have a go, I'd be taking a similar approach and using a "scrap" cheapo donor acoustic Git.
  9. Cool.. Those should fly... particularly if offered at a reasonable price as you envisage, look forward to seeing Grimelight evolve Just one thought, purely imo I'd avoid "jokey" h/s logos.. that'd likely rather put me off an otherwise nice "relic" type bass.. I'd maybe leave it blank with the option to apply one of the buyer's choice??
  10. That's great.. Way cooler looking than any of the short Fenders in my opinion
  11. @Smanth could we poss. have a shot of the whole instrument please? Be interested to see it in its entirety
  12. This is my crudely wrought "home made" Tenor guitar, which much to my surprise turned out working and sounding OK, bearing in mind I'm a ham fisted oaf as a "guitarist". . Plus a "work in progress" shot
  13. Epic! Happy New @rsehole is what I'm texting my mates in 11 months time.. πŸ‘
  14. Flight Risk Basses
  15. Yep that's pretty much what it'd be, acoustic guitar with a fairly skinny neck, and 4 double coursesπŸ‘
  16. I tried one of the old style round back mandolins, unfortunately my sossidge fingers wouldn't do the tiny little neck / string spacing I've got an elderly banjo that's do-able for 4 string twangy-ness, I also converted an acoustic guitar to a 4 string Tenor that worked surprisingly well for a butcher's job.. I'm now toying with the idea of doing another but with double courses of strings, mandolin/ bouzouki fashion.
  17. The name Post Metal, conjures up the idea of a group of ex striking redundant postmen who "full monty" style decide to form a Metal band.....
  18. As above with the glue, you can get black cy glue too.. Just a thought
  19. Now I'd just moan at them, try and tap them for a big partial refund, keep it and use it as is if you like it as a bass.. ^BB above beat me to it while I was typing
  20. Or a capo on the singer...
  21. Shame we can't pop back in a time machine and buy stuff.. The first rickenbacker 4001 I had was 200 quid, you could pick up a Fender P or a Jazz for about the same or maybe a few quid less..
  22. Indeed, so we're both saying he should do the same πŸ‘ A capo's a bit cheaper than some pitchshifty electrickery thing too!
  23. Or employ a (possibly scantily clad) slave/assistant to support the end (of your bass)
  24. Yes we're saying the same thing then down tune the bass to match the Gits.... but I read his orig question as having a need to switch tunings up and down, hence the G's use of capos. (and the suggestion to do likewise) I'm sure the op will be along to clarify..
  25. Indeed Laverne, but he said he'd need to drop down a semi tone in his initial question, so I'd think that'd have to be his base bass tuning, then match the Gits with his capo as req. per song/tune etc
