i was at the Manchester gig and Eddie was struggling. It sort of made it fairly unique as the band did what they could to help out. Mike McCready was absolutely on fire, and Jeff Ament is one of the coolest guys on the planet. We’d arrived early and queued so were nice and close. So close I felt something hit me and realised Jeff had thrown a pick - which I happily gathered up and will keep as a prized possession (have told the wife I want to be buried with it when my time is up) and my guitarist son grabbed a Mick McCready pic, who is quite liberal at throwing handfuls out to the crowd in front of him. I’ve seen them 8 times, the first being back in’96 and despite Ed’s obvious struggles it might be my favourite show. Absolutely gutted for those who had tickets tomorrow - I was mulling over the 6+ hour drive to see them again. Hopefully they’ll be back soon as they’re just incredible live. I just hope they drop the prices significantly and consider a few more dates at arenas. It suits them better.

Can’t help with the electrickery problem, but didn’t expect to see my poor old hometown take quite a kicking! I moved away 15 years ago, but I’m still fond of the old place! Even if it is a bit of a dump

Now here's a thing. Different bands, same song different lyrics.
Harps replied to NancyJohnson's topic in General Discussion
Here’s one. Song written by guitarist Stone Gossard, recorded on the original demo tape sent to Eddie Vedder before Pearl Jam formed who did his thing and made Footsteps. At the same time, Temple of the Dog was being recorded so Chris Cornell put his mark on it for Times of Trouble -
Lanegan was brilliant. His solo albums are better than the Trees but they made some great songs. have you listened to Mad Season? He did some songs with them, Slip Away was my favourite. Funnily enough, both were bands that I didn’t get when I was younger but I love both now. One for me I regret not listening to until after they broke up was Gaslight Anthem. Apparently they were a big deal and I’d never heard of them!

I vaguely remember All Saints made a film called ‘Honest’ that was supposed to be awful. I’m looking forward to watching the Foos film. I’m not expecting anything fantastic just hoping it’s fun. I’m pretty easily amused, I liked the Trnacious D film.

Im hoping so, with some enthusiastic picking. If not, it’s not the end of the world. Plugged in it sounds great and it’s fun having it sat ready to play whenever I want to annoy the wife!

Morning all. A slightly unexpected new bass day a few days back after popping into a local shop. I had thought about getting an acoustic bass for a while, mostly to jam with a guitarist friend without having to take a load of kit. They had this in, with a good discount so couldn’t resist. If anyone can recommend a gig bag that’s not too cumbersome I’d be very interested! So without further ado - pics!

You can tell he’s a man of a certain age by the way he keeps checking his head for his glasses

That’s awesome, thanks for the info. Looking though I think considering the condition it’s in, it’s probably not worth spending too much time on!

I still have my first bass. about 8/9 years ago, I knew a guy who knew a guy who collected guitars. I said I was interested in trying a bass if he came across a dirt cheap one. a few weeks later, this arrived. No name, I’m presuming 80’sish? It’s been well played however old it is. It cost me a grand total of £20. Which seemed like a bargain, but when I eventually managed to plug it in, it didn’t work. I’ve no idea if it sounds good and I’m not technical enough to figure out what’s wrong. I’ve kept it around but I’m running out of space so it’ll have to go somewhere soon. It looks like it’s had a good life, plenty of wear in it.

After much hinting to my wife (‘that one please!’), I am now the happy owner of a Harley Benton fretless. I’ve not had much time on it yet as we visited family. Hopefully over the weekend I’ll get to have some fun with it. first impressions were that it had the worst setup I’ve ever seen, the strings were flush against the fretboard. I’ve adjusted it a bit but I’ve got a set of flats to try on it so I’ll set it up properly with then. my other bass related gift was Pearl Jam the complete scores song book, which is both amazing and a little daunting! It will allow me to get my Ament on with some fretless songs!

My morning was going quite well until I saw that!

Two favourites for me. Ayron Jones’ debut(ish) album, Child of the State - my favourite new thing to come out of Seattle since the 90’s (and boy do I love me some Seattle music!) And Jerry Cantrell, lead guitarist of Alice in Chains’ new solo album Brighten I’m going to have a listen to the other suggestions in the thread this afternoon!

Your best (and worst!) bass gear purchases of 2021?
Harps replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
The Duff is indeed passive. Switchable between the pickups and it has the TBX tone thing. As you can probably tell, I’m something of an expert! Other than wanting to play with a fretless bass, I don’t think I’ll be needing much else for a while! We’ll, maybe a five sting. And an acoustic. Here’s my slightly messy pictures. The pedalboard is homemade. Once I’ve figured out where everything’s going, I’ll try and tidy the wiring. And yes, the stupid sticker is all my own doing! -
Your best (and worst!) bass gear purchases of 2021?
Harps replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
It’s been a bit of a landmark year for me, started the year with an epi Thunderbird and a tiny practice amp, and have added a whole load of great gear, including a new bass plus TC Electronic RH750 with 410 cab and a nice selection of pedals. The best, without a doubt, was my Fender Duff McKagan sig. I absolutely love it. It plays beautifully, the drop tuner is really handy for what I play and it looks great too. I can’t think of anything that I’ve bought that’s been particularly bad, but there’s still time! -
I’ve had the new Jerry Cantrell solo album pretty much on repeat since it came out a couple of weeks ago. Black Hearts and Evil Done is my favourite off the album.

Hype! - Documentary - The Seattle (grunge) scene in the early 90s
Harps replied to Eldon Tyrell's topic in General Discussion
Great film! I was a full on grunge kid in my teens (and mostly still am, only older and podgier). The soundtrack was fantastic, I had it for years before I managed to finally see the film. the best song was Second Skin by The Gits. RIP Mia -
I’ve recently picked up a pack of these, and I’m very impressed. Dans guitar store precision picks. Nice and chunky and the shape works for me.

‘That happened, and we all let it happen’

I picked one up! Wanted a corona chorus so justified the extra cost because I won’t need any more pedals (yeah, right). anyway, first problem of many. The tuner - does it do alternate tunings? I can’t figure it out

I’ve started a deep dive into all things Duff McKagan. Liked a lot of what I’ve listened to so far, but this is my favourite:

Purchased a Darkglass compressor pedal from Douglas. It was a great price, he posted it out quickly it arrived faster than expected - and in perfect condition. A pleasure to deal with!

Hey all. I found this place thanks to a thread about a bargain TC Electronics head & cab. Since then I’ve checked here pretty much every day! I’ve had a Epiphone thunderbird for a few years now but I only really messed with it and never properly learned how to play. My son started getting guitar lessons and the tutor also teaches bass so I thought it was a good time to really learn the bass. And I love it. I’ve got a long way to go, but I look forward to playing it when I’m stuck at work. I mostly listen to rock, if it’s got guitars I’m happy. Grunge was my jam growing up and it’s still my favourite music I do like my bass but I wish I’d spent the extra on the Pro instead of the basic one, but unfortunately the shop I bought it from weren’t very helpful at the time so I didn’t really get a chance to compare the two, and it was a bit too much money to spend when. I didn’t know how much I’d use it. Hopefully I’ll find one locally to get a go on, although my current bass does everything I need perfectly well, but I can’t help looking! Anyway, hopefully I’ll start popping up in some of the other threads on here! cheers!
