1.
The Comfort Strapp has that bouncey thing...going on.. also they wear out & become painfull ive found. I now use the Neotec Megabass which is far better for comfort & design. I arrived at this via' Levys Leather straps which are well made & expensive also...but not as comfortable as the Megabass Strapp for myself. Now im looking @ the Gruv gear Neo... which is expensive' plus they say it has faux leather?...@ nearly £50.00 that is a little trashy...i feel.
Among mine, I have an Overwater one with the elastic section at the front, bought best part of 15 years ago and used loads. Still comfortable, still on the go, sadly discontinued! Had a Neotech, overall elastic-ish vibe with the neoprene, but shock absorbing rather than comedy stretch. Brilliant. More recently got into Mono, of which I now have a few, bought both new and used. No elastic vibe, but very comfortable. Not had particular slippage problems meself. No leather at all.. they say it's the same rubber as used in US Navy Seals' boats! Deffo not a cheap feel. As one of my basses is around 13lbs weight, and I've been a sciatica sufferer for 15 years plus, good straps are essential. However, if your bass doesn't balance well it'll still all sit on one shoulder. Yon 13 pounder balances beautifully!
2. As above, really.. those soft leather, a bit wider at 2 1/2", adjustable by changing how the tail sits in the slots. £10 posted per strap, o̶r̶ ̶b̶o̶t̶h̶ ̶f̶o̶r̶ ̶£̶1̶6̶.̶
3. As someone asked, this is the ACOUSTIC version of the Trace compressor, rather than the bass SMX; although I have used it on bass (it has 1/4" jacks, right) the voicing is more guitarry.
4. I'm just not using this enough, and since the arrival of the TC Hypergravity that one has taken over as my go-to compressor. Runs from a 9V power supply, or via a suitable adaptor cable you can work it from a battery - did it years ago! Grab a classic!
5.
I suppose the other thing would be to get a preamp/pickup set which needed 18 volts - which would need a two-battery route, which would be bigger, which would obliterate the evidence of this foulup.
EMG actually work even better on 18V.. not so much louder, just better headroom.
6.
Do you know what model EMGs you have? If they are soapbars then all other EMG soapbars of the same size will fit - you might find that a different EMG model would suit you without having to rip everything out.
Quite a few brands make soapbars the same size as EMG, so the world is your oyster and Other Musically Related Items For Sale is your friend!
7. I have EMG J5s in a fretless Overwater, run it into a Gallien Krueger Fusion 550.. no lack of grunt and it kicks like a mule!
8. I have quite a selection of such things, built up over the years. One of the best for me, even with a low B, is the Planet Waves NS Micro Tuner. Tiny, so I've almost lost it a couple of times, but it's size means it can stay on the bass when putting it back in the case.
9.
What does GAS mean? Yeah, I bought another precision down the road last night at 10pm
I think you just answered your own question. Welcome to Basschat!
10. I have the guitar version of this, which is not for sale anyway, but just to say it's so good, and really easy for editing on the hoof! I assume the bass version to be equally so. GLWTS. :-)
11. A 'HUP!' for the price INCLUDES POSTAGE!! (Mainland only, but open to discussion..)
12. Somebody was after one in Items Wanted in the last few days.
13. I got a TE AH250SMX new in the early 90s, and it's still very much alive! Last year I just wanted more headroom for one band in particular, and after much thought, discussion and agonising I took the plunge with a GK Fusion 550 from Bassgear. Fantastic amp with all the edginess you could want but the versatility to dial it out if you wish. The SMX is now my 'home practice ' setup, except when I feel guilty and gig it as happily as before. Pondering a GK MB series as a compact practice /backup head..
14.
Pm'd
And replied!
15.
Thanks for that. Looks grand. Can you point me to any recordings online where I can hear it too?
Cheers! Click on the Myspace link in my sig, and The Gift and When It's All Over are on that bass. Crumbs.. recorded over 8 years ago! Rather like this one as well, although glad to report I've had a haircut since! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3AfKFkErR4
16. I need to (ahem) clear some space, so up for grabs first off is a Cruiser by Crafter Jazz type, which I defretted myself. Slots filled with epoxy and rosewood dust. Plays nicely, in fact I've been keeping this one at work for breaktime noodling. Condition is used but good. Currently strung with roundwounds. I'm in West Yorkshire, but can also ship. I have another of these, still with frets for now, with upgrade Japanese made pickups (the originals do the job nicely, but the bass really does justify the upgrade) and series - parallel switching. If you fancy, I can arrange such things for an extra charge. Let's talk!
17. Sadly, low tension does tend to lead to easier rattle; you can possibly educate yourself to play more lightly. Another (IMHO better) possibility is to stay with normal tension and have the bass set up better. I sometimes get to play with Gary Boyle, who's a stupendous guitarist but uses 14 gauge strings on an electric! No rattle, and a feather light setup - you can't get a credit card under his strings. A good setup is a wondrous thing!
18.
Or some sleeves
Sleeves are de rigeur, dear boy!
19. One band I play in occasionally gets too too loud, and a couple of times now I've been faced with a) turn up further and compete, thereby making the noise even worse, or b)turn the bass completely off and mime for the audience's sake. B wins each time, as it also removes a bit of sound pressure, but it's usually about 3 songs before the buggers notice! Maybe next time it happens, I'll be armed with an orange.
20.
Thanks Hubrad. I see you are in West Yorkshire, I live in Wakefield. Can you recommend anyone I could take it to? I know a couple but I haven't used them in a while. Cheers!
I've just spoken to an excellent fellow in Bradford, and will PM you his number. He also said the first choice would actually be the string(!) Slacken off the E string and look for signs of a kink in the place where there's a buzz. Sounds a bit extreme, but he showed me this once on a guitar in the shop and he was bloomin' right!
