1. If it's a defret, it could be a slightly proud fill-in; otherwise you do find a fretless board can wear if you repeatedly hit certain notes, kinda fretless fret-wear. Put a steel rule or straight-edge over that position and put a bright light behind, so if there's even a slight depression in the board you'll see it. Until I learned to do my own, I'd have mine skimmed every year or two as certain notes would always develop a buzz.
2.
pity they didn't fix them in very well. Hope my glue repair job lasts till next gig....
Gorilla Glue! I've just used it for the first time.. verrry sticky!
3. I have Creative Wave Studio for editing in WAV, and freac for conversion to mp3 or other formats. Both free IIRC and dead easy to use - I was just doing some when I read your thread!
4.
It's a thought. I've only ever had one headless, but the strange shaped body felt odd to me and not "captured" under my arm. I guess its all a matter of what you get used to? I know Westones are "2 a penny", but cutting the head off an 80s bass feels wrong to me.
It can work nicely.. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/44673-ibanez-roadster-megacustom/page__hl__megacustom but I'd be more inclined just to put fresh tuners on it.
5.
Thanks. I'm wondering if these cabs all use 4 ohm drivers. Having a daft idea that I could rewire it to 2 ohms and then put that in series with my existing 4 ohm load.More thinking required (and probably a bit of commonsense).
Assuming it's the same setup as the BC212, it's a pair of Chinese Eminence '16 ohms' speakers to make the '8 Ohms' cab. I changed my BC212 to USA speakers, which I prefer, but at this price someone has to grab this bargainsome cab! if I wasn't halfway through a self-build 210 I'd be on it myself.
6. Playing now.. very nice! Fretless is the way, and you handle it well. Original composition Turkish folk-rock kinda thing?
7. Do you ever bow? If so even occasionally, the smooth metal winding works way better than wirewound.
8.
Typically, if two gtrs have 412's, then you have to know why they are using them. If they can't tell you .... that is all you need to know. You can tell a hell of a lot by the gear they bring...
I occasionally play with a chap round Bradford who, in his 60s, is a really tasty bassist after some injury a couple of decades meant he can't play guitar 'as well as he could'.. should hear him on guitar! Anyway, in guitar mode his ultimate rig is a 12W combo. He was never known, on any instrument, for being unheard!
9. Depends what you call cheap.. working at Whitby folk festival at the mo, and a Luther I know said he had a brand new Schaller seize on him. Generally, the more established brands will last better, but the Korean or Chinese ones will outlast most of our ownerships.
10.
Not sure you can win this one mate
This, really. Even with basic protection (and I've done gigs on screwed up toilet tissue! ), if your ears are smarting the next day then it's too loud. Some people seem to reckon it's a good part of rock and roll. . no, it frigging isn't!
11. Wilkinson.. good point! I have one of those also. I don't know if it is still a current model, but they crop up on Ebay occasionally
12.
The Schaller 2000 might get you a narrower string spacing than the 3D but IME it's a complete bastard to get set up. I'd think twice about ever owning another bass which had one fitted.
Not actually that hard; I use a drill bit between the saddles for consistent spacing. A feeler gauge would be just as good. I have a couple of 4ers and a 5er with the 2000. I think it's one of those parts where if you really want what it gives you, you'll work it out. :-)
13.
Finally! Thanks so much! ...Not sure if I can drill with the appropriate accuracy using just a hand drill...
So not only do you have Parts Acquisition Syndrome, but now you've become infected with Tool Acquisition Syndrome! Welcome to the pack. https://www.bosch-do-it.com/gb/en/diy/ergo-home.jsp
14. Schaller 2000 is even better than the 3D. I have this on a couple of basses. You can get the spacing down to just over 15mm, and the ballend moves with the saddle so no sideways pulling. 5 screw fitting.
15. I drove a wagon for a ducting company. . They called it 'tape'. :-D
16. Tape as a temporary fix, and get on to Yamaha for a replacement cover.
17. Elixir do stainless steels nowadays as well as nickels. I have a set in the cupboard just waiting until the nickels go downwards enough to justify changing!
18. Bought a well-used pedal from Tuco.. advertised as such. The 'faults' were as described and reworkable as expected with a bit of tweaking and improvising, so an excellent deal all round. Good chap to deal with.
19.
If they do ask, tell them you took it there with you to play a gig with friends during your stay Go on, live a little
I really wouldn't say that; if the US guys think you've been working illegally they'll probably kick you out even though you're leaving, and you'll not be welcome to return!
20. GK CX210 or 210MBE are strong contenders.
21. Customs.. be prepared to pay VAT and duty - if you get let through you've won! If you post it you'll probably get charged on arrival by the carriers, quite possibly plus a handling charge. Mind you, who do you trust more, airline baggage handlers or carrier companies? Pack it for Armageddon either way, as you're most unlikely to get a bass in the cabin nowadays.
