1. I had one briefly, a while back. An amazing piece of kit, but with all those knobs and switches my poor brain just couldn't compute in real time so I sold it on and went for a simple bass/treble job. If the reason you're considering this move is harshness in a Fender J (albeit a US DLX), this is the third time in a few days I've come across this comment. I'd also consider other aspects such as strings. Tone-wise, so as to suss out whether a change of pre would actually have the desired effect, why not get hold of a parametric eq? If you can reshape your tone suitably then at least you know just which frequency(-ies) your pre needs to work on.
2. +1 for bonding! My 'ultrabond' bass is here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/44673-ibanez-roadster-megacustom/page__hl__ibanez%20roadster I have so much time and soul invested in that bass that it took me a loooong time to find anything else; I mention part way through that process that I finally got an Overwater.. played a particular model and something in me went 'bump'. It took me about four years to justify pressing the button on the same model, but once it finally arrived it didn't disappoint in any way.. still got that, and it will be in action at the end of the week. A very interesting experiment is to go to one of the specialist places such as Bass Direct and play a variety of basses. You either soon start to realise what all this talk of bonding is about, or you are happy enough playing anything. We're not all the same, thank goodness!
3. I did loads of gigs on a 210. Especially with modern, more efficient speakers and cab design there are some brill cabs. Traded my last 210 with Beneath It All a few years ago. . great cab, often wonder where it is now. Oak-faced MDF with front port; I had a knife and fork sticker on the front.

J dilemma

We had a used USA Jazz, mid-2000s, in the shop a little while back. The tone with steel Rotos as fitted was just painfully bright for my taste, both acoustically and hence electrically. With so much acoustic brightness, I'd say pickups wouldn't mellow it down. I'd have put halfrounds on for myself.
5. What manner of bass are you thinking of for this? It occurs to me that the standard shaft is spot on for plate mounting or a thinner top, while those longer shafts are probably ideal for more of a thicker range of tops.
6.
Sorry for being dozy. One of these? http://www.ebay.co.u...K%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
That would work, but the long shaft might get in the way unless you use either a spacer or both nuts on the one shaft. The standard length one is thus: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/One-Genuine-USA-EMG-Short-Brass-Split-Shaft-25K-Volume-Tone-Potentiometer-Pot-/161595674719?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item259fda505f This one is the solderless version: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EMG-25K-Tone-Pot-with-short-split-shaft-Cables-4-pin-Solderless/370724797133?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D30111%26meid%3D888d45c01a4442b6a657f79ac59557fa%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D3%26sd%3D321727835981&rt=nc and I just saw they now do a 25K with push-pull switch (ideal for the active-passive EQ): http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EMG-25K-Push-Pull-Pot-with-short-split-shaft-Cables-6-pin-Solderless-/371176804444?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item566bdc905c Running at a higher voltage doesn't so much raise the volume as the headroom. Just that bit clearer, especially if you play hard.
7. Most welcome, Dood.. if I could justify it it would be mine already! Located near Predator Country?
8. Yup, you can even install a kind of active passive switch, except in this case it would refer to the EQ. You need the usual 'passive' tone pot as per EMG, i.e. 25k with tone capacitor.
9. This one, in BFS..http://basschat.co.uk/topic/258666-overwater-progress-series-i-5-string/page__p__2756211__hl__overwater__fromsearch__1#entry2756211 with 16.5mm string spacing and 36" scale.. and it'll be typically superb quality.
10. Is that Billy Sheeran, cousin of the famous... ? GLWTS!
11.
But, if the seller can't be arsed to read what's clearly printed on the headstock, are they going to get my address right?
Henc eth ementio no fvariance. You're in with a far better chance on BC than the 'bay!
12.
Thought I may venture out of the 'Basses for sale' thread and see what happens elsewhere on Basschat.
You too, huh? I've had to set my default to New Content.. ;-) Great stuff.. that looked like fun, and sounded good!
13. It strikes me, as an extra benefit, that preset tags also gets us round either spelling mistakes (not so common on BC, but we've all browsed on Ebay and chortled at the Finder Precocious basses, I'm sure!) or variance (is it 5string or 5 string? Or strings? Or Five?) I think most on here are either fairly knowledgeable about their gear, or at least interested enough to learn from others.
14. Following my previous post, I've been looking more closely at tags.. in the first couple of pages, only a handful of sellers are even using them. However, hovering over a tag brings up a little sign which says 'Find more content tagged 'xxx''. Even clicking on some definite repeats, such as 'Fender', 'Overwater' and '5 string', I get a page which tells me that no restults are found. Are the tags actually active at all? On a quick read down these first couple of pages I see some obvious ones (see above) getting repeated use, but then our combined creativity takes over.. there's one, which is totally valid, tagged as F bass Fretless Alain Caron.. as I say a valid tag, but if the next person to be selling such a thing changes one letter or space while trying to advertise theirs it will be a different specific tag. This is why I suggested a template of tags, from which one might choose by brand, colour, number of strings etc. Of course the tags actually have to be active for this to work, but then the default position if that the whole BFS section shows. After that we are free to click on a tag of choice if we wish to narrow our search. When it comes to listing our BFS, it's up to the seller.. want to make your bass more visible in a more specific search? Use tags. Just want to fire it up in the BFS section? Don't bother.
15. moving on.. When you list something for sale, you can put a number of tags in as well.. how does the searching for tags thing work? It strikes me that tags could actually be the way of putting your bass in any categories you fancy, then it's down to the browser or buyer as to whether they just want to look across the whole section or by tag. At the mo, I believe we can tag as we wish; perhaps a preset list of tags could be used by way of subdivisions? This is already part of the site software, so the onus is on us to learn (maybe a masterclass in the offing?) how to use it to its full potential before worrying about new (and time-consuming and expensive!) software.
16.
Beer mats under the feet
Awaiting obvious jokes about standing on beermats while playing..
17. My Trace head used to do this (not mega-heavy, but deffo not light either) until I changed the hard plastic feet to much better grippy rubber ones. Problem solved! :-)
18.
What's the budget? I think you could be looking at the Ibanez BTB675 or maybe the Peavey Grind 5, Ibanez is just under 17mm not sure about the spacing on the Peavey. Another option might be the SRFF805. Until you mentioned the spacing, I was going to say forget about neck-through and look for an MTD Kingston. I've just picked one up from the forum and the low B is immense!
Sadly, the BTB series 5ers are 19mm spacing according to all their blurb. If you find something which is good in all but the string spacing, and it has a surface-mount bridge (rather than the BTB routed-in saddles) then a replacement bridge is dead easy. I have a few things with the Schaller 2000, both 4 and 5 string - adjustable from about 15.5mm upwards. :-) http://basschat.co.uk/topic/92918-schaller-2000-bridge-ft-ill-keep-it/
19. I'd say go for it if you're up for an experiment! Look at pics on #32 here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/44673-ibanez-roadster-megacustom/page__hl__ibanez%20roadster Mine was 4-string headed when I bought it!
20. Fretless.. just go for it! You'll either never look back or not take to it, but at least you'll know. Me? Played a fretless first, and I'm still in love! :-)
21. I love these pickups.. got emgs in a couple of basses. Not oldschool, which is not to everyone's taste. The DC is fixed dual coil side by side. If you want switchable you need the TW ones.. http://www.emgpickups.com/bass/extended-series/5-string/40tw.html I've thought about these, but really I've never actually needed them. I particularly like the DC and P models.. make sure to get the P for the right number of strings!
22. On the bright side, if you're going along thinking it's going to be a crappy night, you could come away more pleased with the outcome.. Personally I don't like those kinda gigs any more, and there has to be a verry convincing reason for doing such a one, even if it's just 'first gig, so we'll record it and analyse for tightening up purposes'.
23. Easy enough to fit a narrower spacing bridge, and those EMGs will work fine at any spacing.. ;-)
24.
Solid as a rock, heavy and brutish but some great sounds. I found I only ever used mine one pickup at a time though, it sounded too 'hollow' with both on at once for me.
Isn't that out-of-phase? IIRC when I had one it had a toggle phase switch. Very interesting tone control.. rather than just a treble bleed, it went from full tone single coil to treble-bled humbucker (or vice-versa - long time ago!). I got rid of the capacitors on mine, as those pickups sounded great either way full tone.
25. It took me ages to come to terms with it. It eventually sunk in that it wasn't all end-of-the-night drunks who will say anything just to have been seen talking to the band! If I keep getting re-bookings, I must be doing something right for somebody; if I'm enjoying it too, then that's all grand! :-) There's still far too many folks that I consider well ahead of me, so I'm not going to get conceited about it.
