1.
Yeah, but if it's a Japanese made product, to Ibanez Japan standards. . . it'll be a serious bass.
At that price I can't see it being Japanese, but looks good!
2. The G rang a bell, so I went a-looking.. sure enough, that's a Guitar pickup! Probably nowt wrong with it, but better balanced on a 6-stringer. http://www.giggear.co.uk/p/EMG-Select-Designed-by-EMG-SEHG-Humbucker/ I know some brands like Shadow and Select(EMG passive cheapies) used to do a bass humbucker size, so I'd be inclined to try such a one or rout for a new pickup completely. Just went further.. THIS is what you want! http://www.emgpickups.com/bass/hb-models.html
3.
I disagree with pretty much all of this post. "Playing with a pick requires a tweeter"?????? C'mon!!!!!
The 'playing with a pick' comment is the only part of HazBeen's post that I would disagree with, but I'm right with you on that, Jenny. A couple of my cabs have tweeters, but I usually either turn them partly down or even dial them out. Even stripped a few out completely, crossovers and all, over the years. Depends how I want to sound just then. I'd say that on the odd occasion I play with a pick the tweeter would just sound a bit too harsh for my taste. Great for an extra bit of edge with a fretless in a rock band, mind. ;-) I've been through alot of experimentation over the years, and I definitely prefer the tonality of 10s or 12s rather than 15s standalone. I'd occasionally use a 15 to beef out the bottom end, but 12s are my staple these days. There are some surprisingly light cabs out there.. carry as many as you can be bothered, or end up with something of a selection so you can speaker up differently depending on the gig. Sometimes even a single 10 is more than enough, other times you need lots of cones. Enjoy! Edit: Excellent review of your experience with the BF cabs so far, btw. :-)
4.
... Oh and FFS..no trainers.
Unless you're in an 80s metal tribute act, in which case I suppose they would be de rigeur.
5. I work selling instruments. To me, the look of an instrument is the lowest priority, but I have to recognise that the look is often what makes someone pick the thing off the wall in the first place. Similarly, a band will usually try to have the right kind of image for their scene. Weddings are an interesting one.. pretty much any musical style, and unless it's a particularly raawwk wedding you dress at least fairly smart - only polite for one thing, and who wants a bunch of scruffs at their otherwise smart reception? (One ceilidh band I'm in has had complaints on this re a particular couple of members who insist on their jeans and tees!) True, it really makes no difference to the quality of the music, but it can surely make a difference to your bookings!
6. I've been using the M1 Active for the last couple of years, and I've lost count of the times I was complimented on my tone. Brilliant pickup! Trouble is, I've just got hold of the M80. Really brilliant pickup! First time in ages I've felt excited about a guitar pickup. Currently I've got both in the same guitar - bit of a squeeze to put it mildly - for comparison. Trying to work out how to show this to anyone not actually in the shop..
7. I joined a band about a year ago, and before the first gig (no chance for a full band rehearsal or such) I checked out a few pics and vids of them in action.. it was painfully obvious who were the regular members and who the occasional standins. A couple of trips to the charity shops later I had amassed what I thought would fit in visually.. good move, judging by the reaction, even got quite a few mentions to the audience - 'we've had some people who can play before, but this one actually made the effort to look like a member of the band!'
8.
If it were me I'd remove the full pocket shim (which raises the fret board but keeps it parallel) and replace it with a much smaller shim at the bridge end of the pocket. This will alter the angle of the neck rather than just raise it, and have a much, much, greater effect than a parallel shim. Set the bridge height adjustments to around half way, fiddle with the shim depth to get the action somewhere close, and then use the bridge to fine adjust it. You'd probably find that less than 1 mm would have the desired effect. If the old shim is easily removable then this is a job you could do yourself for no cost. I presume that the neck relief and the nut are set about right?
I was thinking the same. If you're not into such thing yourself then get it done by one who is. The 'new' shim would be a fraction of the thickness and most likely invisible.
9. Don't blame you. . Excellent straps. Mine is at least 10 years old and going strong!
10. Fretless, flats or even better black nylons, possibly something to reduce the sustain or else do that manually. I wouldn't particularly bother with effects unless you want those sounds, but now I'm wondering whether an acoustic simulator might be pleasant. .
11. The Stagg can be bowed.. IIRC it's on the scratchy side for my tastes when set to a good pizz tone, but that's personal taste and suitable EQing (p'raps with an EQ pedal for ease of switching back and forth) may well yield results pleasing to your own ears.
12.
Cheers Paul, I've got about half a dozen tracks to record yet, then we'll see what happens. I'm torn between building a garden shed in the style of a 15th c timber-framed building or redeveloping the attic as a Sherlock Holmes type study.
A Sherlock Holmes style recording/practice studio will turn into rehearsal space, somebody's mate will turn out to be a drummer and away you go again! ;-)
13. We have Pops and Super-Sensitive Clarity hypoallergenic in at the mo.. link below. :-) I mostly use Pops myself, so try to keep that one around as much of the time as possible. Just in case. Others crop up as and when possible depending on who we're ordering with at the time.
14. A further 'thanks' for having done all that leg-work, Daf. Nice to get to converse with your good self, too! :-)
15. The Fishman Pro-EQ II preamp has 4-band EQ plus a sub-bass control on the back. They crop up used for not much money. Recently discontinued. http://www.fishman.com/files/513_300_152_ra_user_guide_preamp_family_web.pdf
16.
Oddly, I'm in exactly the same boat as StingrayPete. I really fancy a five and have been trying to narrow down the options before I try and hunt some down to try. I have a couple of four string Jazzes - both Fenders - and I like them both, although I'm not too bothered about the name on the headstock - but if I'm going to pay over a thou, there has to be a noticeable improvement in quality, tone and comfort for me to justify it to myself. One name not mentioned on here so far is Overwater. There are a couple in the FS section on here although neither does it for me colour-wise. Thoughts? Thus far, my wish list is black block inlays, maple neck, Olympic White with White guard or CAR with white guard. That Sei is beautiful - but then a white Squier VM also fits the bill looks wise and is only £300 - plus an after market pickguard..... So I have to ask myself whether I'm prepared to pay £1800 for that Sei. Or an American Deluxe..... So, what's the view on Overwater?
I have a fretless OW J5, just the most tone monster of anything I've owned! If I were in the market for a fretted 5, I'd be looking at one of those two myself..
17.
And I bet some unprofessional 14 year old lad was still such an idiot to not take a spare wall of sound too, I'd not even lend him a plectrum just to teach him a lesson!
Excellent.. the very concept of a SPARE Wall Of Sound!
18. I'd call it flamed maple top. I have an ebony board fretless just like this.. tone monster!! GLWTS, at this price it's a steal! :-)
19. Gina LeFaux is near Halifax; she's done a couple of mine over the years. 01422316961 :-)
20. 50 quid for a bass you seem to like ? Winner! :-) The Japanese ones usually go for rather more.
21. Pretty bog standard blues-rock kinda riff, really. I'd be surprised if it wasn't already in use before Budgie as well. It's all about context.
22. I don't think they specify the strings until you get a few rungs up the ladder. If I get chance I'll check when I see the Stentor catalogue.
23. The photos are just not clear enough. . That pickup looks at this distance like a Select by EMG.
24.
Yes... or Araldite Rapid Steel. Halford's description does actually say it's for heavy metal fans... http://www.halfords....l-tubes-2x-15ml ...but not the musical kind. So Metallica fans then, I'm guessing.
Now THIS is what I like about BC!
