Electronics; even if you can't so much hear the difference, there are better and worse parts even just considering passive circuits. Case in point, we did a guitar show a year or two back on Merseyside, and a guy came along looking at the replacement parts. Good quality Japanese Strat 5-way switch at about 7 quid. 'I'm not paying any more than two quid for a switch, cos I wear them out half a dozen a year.' Well, durrr!

Sounds to me like if you want that tone you have to get that particular type of bass, or experiment with different combinations of strings/body/neck/fingerboard until you find that thing that works under your fingers.

Hehe.. Seymour Duncan will generally make a real difference even over the USA Fender pickups! You could always sell the Jazz and go for something with a similar neck such as Ibanez SR - plenty powerful and crop up at some good prices used.

I can never remember which pin is which on a barrel jack, so I always work it out afresh with a test meter and a stereo jack plug. Most commonly you get two black wires, which form the switching part of the negative side of the battery. They go battery neg to sleeve, circuit board neg to ring.

We sell Picato, and I currently have both .100 and .105 here; others are available to special order.

If it's so tantalisingly close, possibly a slightly lighter or heavier string might just do the trick due to different stretch rates. It'll be down to experimentation.. let the fun commence!

New strings. Bizarrely - I was once shown this by one of my set-up-wizard friends - the kinking of the string caused by playing can spoil the setup. Also they stretch, and eventually that becomes uneven stretch hence causes problems with intonation.

I used to do this with 410s then 210s, now I occasionally do it with 112s. Some bands like it, some hate that they are made to hear the bass wherEVER they stand!:-D

I have a normal Antex 30W with the smallest flat tip I could find.. anything big just gets in the way. Changing the tip is dead easy. Also have a basic temperature controlled one with a pointy tip, which I use most of the time. Both excellent for guitar wiring and basic amp work.
