1.
Another band got back to me a week later, said no, then 6 weeks later got in touch letting me they made a terrible mistake and would I still be interested? I thought it was a bit cheeky, but the answer was yes.
You have to remember that, from the band's point of view, they get to meet the prospective new members for maybe an hour. It's only once you start regular practices and gigs that the true extent of the relationship shows - first impressions can be quite wrong, too!
2. Hi Daf, so are these the hybrid/prototype set, or am I going to have to try a new set? :-D
3. Drop them down a bit; if you can fit a little bit of masking tape on the side of them you could put a mark on each one to remind you where they were so it's all reversible. You might have to up the gain slightly, but the main thing is to keep them in balance.
4. Cheers, chaps! The weight is really no issue - surprisingly heavy for the size, but really not that much. I'd prefer to keep the full range capability.. made a couple of phone calls, and was given the number for RMJ Loudspeakers, who do a full-on recone service. Roy is actually making a new coil from scratch; as he put it 'it'll be better put together than Eminence did it'! http://recones.com/ Will let you know how it all goes.
5.
Aw man, I used to love my trace stack I sold it for a markbass after my keys player (who used to drive it around) had a heart attack next to me onstage at 27! I've never looked back in many ways, but I do miss the preamp and the cool green/uv stage presence. If they made a modern take of it in a small package I'd be all over it!
Excellent rig.. must have been the bright box that just tipped your keys guy over the edge.
6. Tons of such things on Ebay.. I just searched Allen grub screw.. item 321247066609
7.
Without being pedantic, they were all built in the UK possibly with the exception of some of the later Boxer range (TE engineering badges) and maybe some of the Goldtone guitar amps with Gibson badges.. All GP7, GP12, V-Type and Commando ranges were built in the UK.
Ah, my misunderstanding! So when was the British manufacturing actually stopped? The modern amps are, I believe, PRC built and have less of a reputation. If I had to find a new head I'd probably look at the old ones first. . daft prejudice?
8. Martin Barre says in his Gear history that he bought a Gibson Les Paul Custom back in 1970 that turned out to be a fake.. 'it was a fake and didn’t stay in the collection very long! But I used it on Benefit.' I've never listened to that album and thought there was anything wrong with the guitar tones - did the fakeness matter to anyone but Martin?
9. Have you considered the head-and-cab route? It's what I've done for ages, so only the one head to learn for tone settings etc, with different cabs (tweaks to amp settings, perhaps) for different uses. 1x10 great for practice/small gig, up to two cabs for loud gigs.
10. Gawd! No surprise there, then. Luggage handlers are renowned for really not being bothered, in fact the more fuss you make about how precious something is the more likely they are to throw it or drop things on it. This is why so many DB players resort to an EUB or arrange to rent/borrow locally.
11. ... which is to say it's an excellent piece of kit! ;-)
12. Hi GB.. are you sure they're 10"? I feel sure they're 8s, and the 'missing' panel was a 100W power amp.. I have a complete one that I can't seem to part with 'cos it's so useful.. even done the odd small gig on it!
13.
Then again, I wasn't fashionable in 1988 either.
Yup, I know that one!
14. I have the AH250SMX, got it new in about '93. Belting - I keep looking around, as you do, but I can get my sound with the TE so no need to change. I use it through a EA 1x12 with tweeter, sounds superb. Used to have various other cabs, always sounded great. By reputation, all the English made ones are well worth getting.. well built and repairable. I think the rep slipped after the Gibson takeover, but I have no direct experience of those or later.
15.
I've got a fretless that was given to me by another bassist which I keep 'just in case' I'm ever called up and asked to play a fretless specifically, but can't see it ever getting used outside my living room.
I've got a 'couple' of fretted basses which I keep 'just in case' I'm ever...
16.
The situations in which I can play fretless are all created by myself... I bring a fretless to gigs or studio-sessions without being asked for because otherwise no one would ask. As it is said above : everything which is sometimes adventurous like slap or fretless has been banned and I miss the spirit of the eighties, the best time ever for electric bass.
Likewise.. I almost exclusively play fretless, so I take a fretless to gigs. Never been a problem - fretless isn't ALL slidy slidy!
17. Ibanez BTB have 35" scale and tend to be rather good, even the basic ones which often crop up for a song. I've seen both new and used crop up in your budget range. I have a 4 string 600 series with ash body (still 35" scale). Quite remarkable, really!
18. Just found this thread.. this afternoon's gigging lex to my CXL110 main driver failing. Sod's Law.. I just replaced the tweeter diaphragm one of the CXL112s. John at EA was really helpful in the first case, so I'll drop him a line first to see if the options are still the same. The 110 was my first EA cab bought used about 9 or 10 years ago and well gigged since, so I don't feel hard done by.
19. By way of a trial, pop on a guitar capo at fret 1 or 2 and downtune.. if it feels good but rattles, go up a gauge in strings. If it doesn't work out you have lost nothing.
20.
A beauty. String spacing?
That's a Schaller 2000 bridge with fully adjustable width, down to about 15mm.
21. I would have thought, judging by BTB series which I've looked at a fair load, that they would be the same except the 300 bolt-on neck and the 370 through-neck.
22. Ah yes, that'll be it; I was on my phone!
23.
With your thumb on the centre of the hump on the back of the neck, you can use that as a pivot point and move your fingers up and down the neck and get a longer reach. With your thumb over the top of the neck, as shown here, anyone will struggle
Quite so.. if you've never tried this it can be surprising how much extra reach you gain!
