Decently made Wiring Harnesses, Are they worth it?
hubrad replied to Shockwave's topic in Repairs and Technical
Yup, go for the more reliable option. Also, if you're paying someone to make a harness up for you, you'll be paying the same for their time so you may as well get the more rliable pots etc and only pay once for the labour. I worked a stand at a guitar show a few years ago.. chap came up and looked at Strat switches. We had decent quality Japanese ones, at the time about 5 or 6 quid (still inexpensive compared to Switchcraft). 'I'm not paying that much for a switch; I'll only pay 2 pounds because I get through at least 3 a year.' Well, Duuhh! -
Decently made Wiring Harnesses, Are they worth it?

+1 for having an experiment yourself.. you either learn how this stuff works (as Woodinblack says, pretty straightforward stuff once you get the hang of it) or you realise what you pay others to do! This book is brill.. taught me all the basics I needed to get down and dirty with my guitars! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Guitar-Electronics-for-Musicians-by-Donald-Brosnac-Paperback-1983-/331165569559?pt=Non_Fiction&hash=item4d1b019217 -
Decently made Wiring Harnesses, Are they worth it?
hubrad replied to Shockwave's topic in Repairs and Technical
Personally, I'd replace the pickups first, but it stands to reason that if every part of your signal path is as good as possible then the cumulative effect of even the most subtle improvements is a way better sound. As for any specific player's tone, Scott Devine's vid on tone has a very valid point to make.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vUNUo3TbyI -
and a lot of hygienically Challenged people!
Sat next to a local one of those on a bus the other week. 35 minutes bus journey. Had to wash all my clothes, take a shower and wash the INSIDE of my nose to get rid of the whiff! Awakes my inner snob..

A couple of drops of super glue, job done. It seeks its way into gaps, so if you go steady it'll be an invisible repair.

I'm skint and in debt, a perfect time to buy a Fender Jazz right?
hubrad replied to col.decker's topic in Bass Guitars
Martin Lewis once said that if credit cards were called, much more accurately, debt cards then most likely far fewer people would get into such problems or even take one out in the first place. If you're seriously considering putting yourself in penury, make it count. . No point getting something mass produced; if you really want one of those just save for a while as they'll be on the second hand market (probably on here!) anyway once you can actually afford one. -
To fretless or not to fretless, that is the question!
hubrad replied to Damonjames's topic in Bass Guitars
As Steve Bailey said, you don't have to wobble and slide on EVERY note! Take only the fretless on a gig, in the style of Sting, and see what happens. . I said nothing! -
Seymour Duncan P-Rails.. best of both worlds: http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/electric/humbucker/medium-output/prails_shpr1/ I have one in the neck position on a PRS, and it's brilliant in both humbucker and P-90 modes.

I'm probably not alone in getting put off by a lack of track record, but by way of character reference, Dave has been a really good friend of mine for many years. In fact my DB came from him ages ago, after soooo much effort to prise it from his hands! One of the really good guys and a very respected bass player (he'll most likely cringe on reading that bit..). Mr.Bassman also knows him well, I believe. I did get an unplugged go on this bass quite a while ago, and despite it completely lacking a 5th string I do remember thinking it was rather splendid. I'd recommend taking Dave up on the viewing offer - he's also no slouch on the kettle!
This is the best [s]excuse[/s] reason to have another bass in your collection, so yes go out and get another Jazz!
Yup!

The only way to find out is to play one.. if you can really feel the difference, you'll know it's worth the extra money. If you can't feel it, you'll be just as happy with the 1025 without having spent a load more. What's the difference between a Squier and a CS Fender? etc..

someone selling my band's CD on ebay ? wierd
hubrad replied to artisan's topic in General Discussion
The description does say 'Great collectors item:- promotional CDr as given to Radio Stations and Music Reviewers, limited availability. 100% original, I do not sell copies.', so it looks like that's the way of it. -
Peavey T-40 wiring on basses that aren't Peavey T-40s
hubrad replied to mrdreadful's topic in Repairs and Technical
Excellent.. well done! I love experimentation in such matters.. just because it was made in a particular way, are we all constrained to only ever use it like that? #bagofworms -
I've just had a CD playback on a £350,000 Hi-Fi system
hubrad replied to yorks5stringer's topic in General Discussion
Flanders and Swann.. 'People make an awful lot of fuss, anyway about the quality of the sound they listen to. Have you noticed; they spend all that time trying to get the exact effect of an orchestra actually playing in their sitting room. Personally, I can't think of anything I should hate more than an orchestra actually playing in my sitting room.' :-D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_DptPvj7ts -
Great description. . NOT! Well, I certainly wouldn't go there..

Black nylons on a fretless.. I use the Picato ones but most brands do them. Closest I've got to an amplified d.b.tone from an electric bass.

Here's a gig in which I don't even get to play bass! The bass duties are more than amply covered by Mal Siswick, so I'm on g88t'r and flute. Now with the addition of top-notch saxophonist Peadar Long, here's a snippet pre-sax: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpZo8A2xAHk and the Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/448589335268597/ Adlington Community Centre Railway Rd Adlington Chorley PR6 9RF Don't fear the dancing (although it can be quite energetic) as full instruction is given!

You have to take the tension off! I have one of these. . just think of the mechanics of it. . P.s. brilliant piece of kit.

Also, looking at your avatar list, don't go near the Zoom until you have your basic tone nailed! Think of it as icing on the cake. . you need a decent cake to make the icing worthwhile. A good starting point is a smiley eq if the amp is at all muddy. TE have presets built in, but only you will know when the tone is just right for you and your band.
The last thing I would want to do with any song I was playing would be "drop in a bit of Muse". Why would anybody want to spoil a nice simple but tasty meal by stirring dog sh*t into it?
Aaand the Best Chortle Of The Day award goes to.. Decades ago, I used to loathe the idea of root-fifth on the 1 and 3. Then I got a Bluegrass gig.. it's the perfect bassline!

Smallest car (cheap insurance) that you can fit a double bass in?
hubrad replied to SevenSeas's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I currently drive a Fiesta, and besides a few years of a luxuriously large Xantia estate the previous cars were a Fiat Punto and Rover Metro. The record in the Punto was three of us (each safely seat-belted) plus the DB and amplification, plus the 3rd chap's guitar in hardcase! Split rear seats are really good for that kind of activity. The Punto tailgate was steep enough to allow the DB to stand on its side, whereas the Fiesta only allows mine to lay flat in the back.. max 2 people including driver! -
I have 17 mm bridge can I fit in Nordstrand DC?
hubrad replied to matejj53's topic in Repairs and Technical
I'd give it a try; the only thing that will make them really unusable is if they are slit coils with the split directly under one string (e.g. using a P-bass pickup on a 5-string). Going from 19mm to 17mm spacing, as long as string 3 is right in the middle of the pickup, the outer strings are shifted by 4mm. If you measure from the middle of the string 3 position on the pickup to string 1 or 5 it should be 38mm (19 x 2). As long as 34mm (17 x 2 ) still leaves the 1 and 5 strings over one of the poles it will work, albeit not perfect according to the manufacturers. If you have the pickups anyway, and you are making the bass, I'd try it - what's to lose? I've used non-ideal pickups myself with 17mm spacing on both 4- and 5-strings and it's been fine. Good luck! -
Sadowsky Metro to relic or not to relic?
hubrad replied to JazzBassfreak's topic in Repairs and Technical
I do, but it never seems to progress towards that lovingly worn in feel
Use it more, then! ;-) -
Surgical spirit for me. Seems to do the job on rosin deposits and no signs of finish damage. Added bonus. .the house smells like an old fashioned chemist's!
