1. I once got sparks and smoke out of one of mine.. very impressive, but I have to say the sound quality suffered!
2.
Slightly off topic but the 5 string I tried had such a crappy light body wood (advertised as 'hardwood' on the website) that it had worse neck dive that a Thunderbird. Shame, as it sounded OK.
Well, technically, balsa wood classes as a hardwood.. http://science.howstuffworks.com/life/genetic/question598.htm
3. Does that mean you didn't really bump this morning? Have an extra Hup with regional pride from me:-)
4.
That would be Cass Lewis... also of Skunk Anansie and Gary Moore fame. He can play a fair bit.
Yes, I remember him going into detail about his FOUR finger plucking technique!!
5. I think that looks alone don't generally get you the gig with a decent band (thank goodness! ), although I vaguely remember a Bassist mag interview with the guy who was, at the time, Terence Trent D'Arby's bass player. He said he turned up for the audition, walked in the room, and the management said 'yes, you'll do nicely'. 'Don't you want to hear me play?' says he.. 'Nope, you look the part and you wouldn't be here if you couldn't play.'
6. Of course, as a fretless player I could only get excited about a complete fingerboard made of that stuff!
7.
They already do. What about Warwick's bell brass, and how about these!
Ooh.. I like the sound of those! For an 850 USD price tag I think they need better, larger pics, though. To my eyes they look like.. errr, frets!
8. I'd say it all makes a difference, however subtle. I'd then agree that, when it comes down to it, the technicalities are worthless in the face of 'do you actually like this bass (or guitar, mandolin etc..)' I know, through years of trying different instruments, that I have a particular liking for ash body/maple neck combination. As a fretless player I generally go for ebony board rather than rosewood, both tonally and in terms of trashing the board. That doesn't mean that just any ash/maple/ebony bass will really do it.. or that one made of mahogany will necessarily put me off. I also wouldn't claim to be able to listen blindfold and tell you what something is made of, only whether or not I like the sound. Relax.. this is music!
9. If either of those pipes handle hot water, I'd be inclined to either insulate round them like crazy, or else box them in (removable panel for access) but leave them with a vent to the outside world.. I wouldn't fancy a heated bass cupboard! Pipe insulation is also good stuff for supports padding, also that springy foam some electronics come with. That front cross-member can probably come out with impunity - it was most likely there for security of the tank. Two softwood planks at suitable angles to form a V work really nicely (and easily!) for bottom supports (oo-err!) and a third one with dowels for neck support/separators.
10. Bump to keep this in my 'last month' view, with JOLLY PRICE DROPS.. soon be Xmas ;-)
11.
1978 USA made Peavey T-40 bass in natural, very good condition for age! just some cracking to neck pickup plastic surround. Has had pickup select switch replaced other than that I believe it is all original, frets are in excellent condition! Strung with Ti flats and comes with old but robust hard case! £360.00 Cash sale only --I don't ( can't ) play long scale anymore so unfortunately it has to go! Any trial welcome! ( in Leeds near M1 M62, and A1 ) Will. Hmmm.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14aau3vj9cM
12. I have the fretless 5er of this.. one of the finest and most versatile tone-monsters going. Have a 'Hup!' on me, Grayn!
13.
nice one but you know the rules, no pictures = no bass
Oh, ye of little faith!
14. Who's been attacking Basschat? I'd be looking closely at Banjo Hangout if I were you! :-D
15. Will there be a voluntary sign-up page? Might as well go for it so I don't have to think about it again later..
16. I have to hold my hand up; I don't think I've made a donation (did buy a t-shirt!) and this does seem both reasoned and reasonable. I'm sure we'd all hate to be BC-less! Interestingly, while searching for a particular fellow, I couldn't help but notice just how many zero-post members there are on here. Why sign up in that case?
Hi, yes it's going to start probably on Monday and Worldpay about a week later. The payment screen will pop up as you list an advert - it's all built in and seamless. As soon as you have paid you won't see any difference at all to the way the site operates; this was decided to be critical from the discussion we had linked above. Thanks ped
Will we get a pop-up if we already have a 'for sale' active?
17. Certainly the 'keep your wrist straight' part is common sense rather than anything radical. Remember the early 90s, when it almost seemed that unless you could crank your wrist past 90 degrees you were sooo passé? That aspect rather explains why I tend to play standing up, as I've never found a straight-wristed sitting position (gotta be some innuendo in there.. ) that really worked for me.
18. .. and I'm back in the room! I've now changed back to Honeys, a brand new set for comparison. I was meaning to restring anyway! For as much of a comparison as poss, I changed one string at once, in order G/E/D/A, each time having a few minutes both pizz and arco. At least on my bass and to my ears, I'd say the volume is pretty much indistinguishable between the two sets. Tonally, however, I will happily go with Daf's original post in this thread: 'The idea behind them is to get a string that has a good jazz pizz sound but is as easy to bow as possible with good definition and fundamental to the note - they're not a full sustaining modern jazz string (someone described them as "Paul Chambersy") so they still have that "Innovation sound" but with a bit more brightness and low end definition.' As I said a couple of posts ago, I think I have just found my new favourite strings. Now, how to bring about the sudden demise of everyone else on the list...
19. Aye, I remember speaking to Fender a few years ago, when we were possibly interested in their acoustic and electro-acoustic mandolins. They would happily open an account for us, but only if we took more electric guitars than we carry electrics AND basses in total!
20. So, if I've understood this correctly, DV have spit the dummy out because they've been told to sell (or at least advertise) at a proper mark-up?
