1.
I had a good ole rant about this earlier on FB. Here's the cliff notes!! lol Edited, as it was a bit of a pre-coffee rage first thing this morning!
Nice one, Dood.. have a coffee and relax, now.
2. This one http://www.themusicroom-online.co.uk/product_info.php/cPath/303_304_446_489/products_id/4458 is really good as books go. We sell quite a few of the series, and I've had plenty of good feedback on the various titles. Can't help but agree with Bilbo though - there's no substitute for putting in the hours, whether you use books, DVDs, a teacher or just your own ears. Never stop learning!
3. Most likely around - all hands to the pumps at Folk Festival time. Always good to meet BC folks in real life!
4. Yes, and kind of.. Tribal Planet as such is sadly defunct after the death of the founder, but we now do the follow-on which off the same kind of protection.
5.
Dimensions of my Yamaha BEX4 are ... Length: 118cm Depth: 7cm Upper Bout: 29.5cm Lower bout: 39cm
We have three thicknesses of bass guitar size bag, which will nicely accomodate that - 5mm, 10mm or 20mm of the more dense foam, the last also having extra velcro-in squashy pads for extra fitting and protection. Standard prices £19.40, 28.16 and 66.36 respectively, I feel a BC special coming on..
6. Also there's the AKG C419, now morphed into the C519 Last time I asked, John Spiers of Bellowhead was using these: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INy1YqmCI5k A veritable riot of noise on stage!
7.
I have a Microvox on one of my accordions and the box player in our pogues band also uses one, and yes they do feed back a lot at higher volumes. We have had some success taming it by running it through a feedback destroyer - this is far superior to a graphic IMO, because all you have to do is press a button and off it goes. (-------) The absolute best solution is a Roland V-Accordion, but not a solution for you, it's not available as a diatonic instrument. Plus they are quite expensive.
I used to play in a touring band with accordion at the front; after I'd been in a while the accordionist got Microvox stuff, which was fine up to a certain volume. To get any louder, we learnt to tell the monitor engineer to drop the resonant frequency of his box (in his case about 550Hz) out of the monitors - worked rather well. Feedback Destroyer is supposed to do it automatically, but a parametric is manual and more controllable. The Microvox mics themselves are actually remarkably good (I was also using one on whistle in the same band) but combine an instrument-mount mic with a resonant box and trouble ensues.. The Roland FR-18 is the diatonic version.. http://www.themusicroom-online.co.uk/product_info.php/products_id/4780
8. I've duplicated this from the topic in Other Musical Items.. if I shouldn't have both listings I'll drop one! Hi all, [s]Since managing to get a deal with Picato/Innovation strings I've not needed to use my 'spare' sets of Evah Pirazzi. I keep shifting them from cupboard to cupboard.. anyone else fancy them? These are unused strings and there's TWO sets (yes, I know!), one of which is dated 03.09 and the other I got from Johnson S.I in USA about the same time. Will fit (just) on my 108cm scale Meinel.[/s] Also one set, also unused, of Savarez Corelli Tungsten 'Small Size' 100cm (1/2 size) the type I used to use on my previous Zeller 3/4 with scale length of 103.5cm. Dated 06.03 AFAIK synthetic strings don't deteriorate like gut.. some folks play the same set for years. You all know what strings/packets look like, so there doesn't seem any point in photos! [s]I'm looking for £110 per set sent by tracked courier or £100 per set collected just north or south of Bradford.[/s] [s]The Pirazzi are now £80 posted - CHEAPER than I've seen a part-used set go for on here! Grab both for £150 - less than the cheapest single set I could find on a quick shopping trawl![/s] [s]The Corelli are yours for £55 How's that grab anyone?[/s] All gone a while back; sorry!
9. Ooh, am I allowed to do that? I'll put a link on. If it's considered naughty I can always remove one.

11. I was just thinking that unless you really must move it on that should be a keeper!
12. Excellent stuff, thanks Scott.. just watched it having eaten lunch at work, and I'm now in such a floaty soporific place. Coffee 8-)
13. I got that mail, dropped in my hotmail Junk folder. My address isn't at all unique to BC, so it could have come any way round. I think alot of these spammers don't even bother harvesting real email addys these days, but make up millions of permutations of names and mail servers. I've sometimes received such stuff as one of dozens of Cc addresses which are vaguely similar to mine; never bothered checking to see if any of the others even exist!
14. OOH! If I had money to spend! I don't even need a fretted bass.. Seriously, for anyone looking, I have the fretless of this model and it's an amazing instrument, my bass of choice for the rockier gigs. Good luck with the sale KB. Where in the country are you?
15.
This is not at all obviously true. In fact, given that roundwound strings have a spherical wrap while flatwound have a tape wrap (not exactly a 'solid bar') it seems quite possible that there's less metal in a flatwound. I expect it also varies greatly between different manufacturers. But not all flatwounds do 'feel tighter' (i.e. compliance) nor do they all have higher tension (e.g. TI Jazz Flats).
The core of the string is what dictates the tension.. there's x thickness of core and y thichness of winding; x+y=gauge of string. A thicker core with less winding will give a tighter, more powerful string, whereas a thinner core with more winding will reduce the tension but give more harmonic richness as you have a more flexible string. Different makers use different (sometimes several) mixes to achieve different sounding and feeling strings. On Nylons.. I've used Picato black nylons on an Overwater fretless, which gives the closest thing to EUB tone I've ever got from a bass guitar.
16.
Ya just gotta do it. Again and again and again and again until you get it right.
+1, and +1, and +1!!
17. 'Cue the pendant'.. Isn't that the party game, favoured by children in warm countries, involving beating the cr@p out of a papier mache donkey to get at the sweets inside?
18. I wouldn't use lemon oil on the body, although it is the most usual stuff for the fingerboard. There's an excellent 'Violin Polish 1880' by Stentor.. most music shops that deal with violins will carry it, or if you can't find it we'll mail order you some. I've done my DB body all over with it twice in about 7 years or so.. the whole house smells seriously amazing for a couple of days after that!
19. Get another string, and this time allow enough length for 3 or 4 turns round the post.. You need the string to leave the post as low as possible. I've seen similar on a variety of instruments, and the above should fix your problem.
20. For that price I would be wanting a meouwing pitch generator!
21. I've gone through Victor C. Knight for years, since they were the MU official insurance agency (joined the MU for this very reason!). Give Patrick there a ring on 02083512400.. he always seems to know just what's going on. I think MU use Hencilla Canworth now, but they came up with just too many dumb-ass questions ('do you meet famous people as part of your work?') and quoted me more for the same cover with the same company. In the past I tried a couple of times to get quotes for alternatives; as soon as you mention 'Business use as a Musician' the everyday insurers would double the quote or even refuse to quote at all. They think we're all Marc Bolan or we might be carrying Sting in the passenger seat (think of the Loss Of Earnings claim..)
22. Just wait for the counterfeit brigade to jump on this!
