Yes yes enough of the dirty talk - 'flame maple' - 'abalone blocks' - 'blueburst' - wash your mouth out with soap(bars) and (over)water - let's rewind a bit... 'Brochure'!? Hello?! They're not even on the website yet!?! I thought I was the arch luddite but hats off to them. And where can one find this brochure of legend foretold? Didst thou summon it with sourcery? Dammit, I'm always the last to know - this can only add to my persecution complex.
It hasn't actually been printed yet, but we're getting on the dealers list, so I got an email with sneak preview pics! Chris May also said that he would be setting up the first couple of batches himself to make sure things were coming through in correct fettle. This sounds very promising indeed!

Best pickups to give a Jazz more presence/authority?
hubrad replied to Clarky's topic in Accessories and Misc
I've got a fretless Overwater J5, filled with Bartolini goodness.. dunno the model, but being a 5-string that narrows the choice down as I know the 4-string daul-coil J Barts have a gap in the middle. This bass has pretty much got rid of that unshiftable feeling that, even though I don't actually WANT one, I really SHOULD have a fretless P-bass. -
mmm...block markers....
Hehe heh! Just seen the brochure.. there'll be a Contemporary J - double soapbar, flame maple top. The brochure shows blueburst and blackburst with maple necks with what looks like abalone block markers. Looking forward to getting hold of these!
+1 on Picato - some on Ebay at the mo. G.
+1 again on Picato.. I managed to get them to do a 5 string flat DB set for me as well! Carry them regularly in the shop now.

Hi Phil, I came on here intending to put a link to the Ebay listing then realised it's in the family Anyway, just for anyone's info, I have the fretless ebony board version of this bass, and in all seriousness this would be one of my 'essentials' if we were having a baby! As you say, 'tis a weighty beast, but it's so well made that once it's on the strap it balances so well that I can play it all night without any discomfort.. and I suffer with Sciatica! Best of luck with the sale (and with the baby!) Phil, if I could cope with frets it would be coming home with me (I mean the bass!)! HUGH

Another should I leave my band thread?
hubrad replied to waynepunkdude's topic in General Discussion
The thing about guitarists that I don't get is the self-importance. There are lots of guitarists - far more than bassists, vocalists & drummers put together. So why don't they grasp quite how replaceable they are? Jon.
-
Another should I leave my band thread?
hubrad replied to waynepunkdude's topic in General Discussion
Right my band are quite established, never going to go anywhere but get some good support slots so I'm happy with that. The guitarist has just graduated as a 'graphic designer' and takes everything far too seriously and basically thinks he knows everything, he doesn't take input any more, if anyone comes up with an idea he will say "I like it but lets go my way" ...... /rant
I've struggled on with too many line-ups which started as a democracy only for one member to, basically, claim the band as 'theirs'. Leave now rather than later, IMHO! -

Nice one Dood! A pic or two as well; must get round to a computer with sound out so I can listen to the clips. It makes us realise just how good your avatar is!

Bartolini do some good J pickups; you need to make sure you get the specific 5 string models with either one coil right across or two coils (end to end) slightly imbalanced so as to cover the middle string. Their 4 string end to end hum cancelling one has a wee gap between the coils so is weak for the A.

I've got a couple - Intelli and Acoustica, both from the shop (naturally enough!) http://www.themusicroom-online.co.uk/produ...roducts_id/3001 http://www.themusicroom-online.co.uk/produ...roducts_id/4627 I sometimes put them on the bridge, but I find clipping them onto the cheek of the headstock, rather than trying for the end of the scroll, to be more reliable. Also this brings them very close for viewing without visible squinting on stage. Battery life seems really good on both, prob because they turn off after a couple of minutes of no vibration so no accidental leaving them on for the week. I think alot of modern tuners have this kind of circuit.

You say there aren't many band opportunities in your area but this might mean there are actually a lot of potential musicians waiting to be auditioned!

As I read thru your post my thoughts was and are the same as many of the answers. Start your own band with your preferred singer.

Sounds like your current bandmates are stopping the band progressing by their obstinate nature. You're doing all the work, so tell them it's their turn to look for a singer. Let them find someone suitable, and say you'll be ready when they are. In the meantime, start up something new with the singer you've mentioned, who sounds positive, talented and flexible. If the other two band members answer your ads, make sure you include "The Pina Colada Song" as an audition piece.
Sounds like a consensus developing here.. Decent singers and bass players are always in demand - go for it!
I also wouldn't mind a free trial being this the cab i'm aiming for my next rig but i'm not seeing it crossing the big pond for an overnight trial... i'm just gonna have to wait until i finally get the Shuttle 9.0 i'm after and take the plunge on the T'Midget. Hope i won't end up wishing for a Super12 instead... lol Alex, this is great marketing. Keep those good ideas comming
On the bright side, GB, there should be quite a few user reviews popping up once the cab gets moving, so you'll get a good bit of info from a player's point of view. If it helps, I tried the Compact on the last Barefaced tour and was well impressed; I'm just more into the tone of smaller speakers. Can't wait to get my hands on the Midget, but well busy at the mo so not bouncing off the walls just yet!

20 quid plus postage plus you might have to pay duty... buy a large amount of chocolate and 2 spare batteries!

Do they do (even slightly) different things? This sometimes helps me to have more than one of something. Of course, you could always have one of them out on semi-permanent loan.. say, to someone in the area!
You're not sure, but I am and am afraid I have to tell you you're wrong. You have a pool of capital expenditure. You add to it and claim relevant reliefs. You sell an asset from within that pool and the proceeds (up to original cost of the asset sold comes back in as a receipt in the pool, which if it has a value of nil will give you a charge, and a charge in any event when you eventually retire from gigging/making money (do we ever!). If you are lucky enough to have a bass that has appreciated in value through being a vintage rarity and make a profit over cost then that profit will be a capital gain, but probably exempt due to CGT rules on chattels EDITs to tweak the answer for correctness / hopefully help in understanding. If you are not sure ask someone in the know, which sadly nowadays probably does not mean the HMRC Telephone Helplines as recent experience suggests you will get a variety of answers that may well not be correct
Ah, nice one Walman.. 'chattels' was the word the HMRC fellow used when I asked about the occasional buying and selling of gear and its relevance (or, as he put it, lack of relevance in this case) to the tax return. That was a couple of TRs ago, before I even started to be aware of what CGT is for(!) I suppose most of us aren't in the position of our basses going up in value by quite enough to worry about then! Yup, I can imagine retiring from 'normal' work, but while ever body, mind and will are ok I can't imagine life without playing in some context.

Excellent stuff.. nearest you're coming this year is Bury and I'm already out that night, but will watch your gig list! I'll try to say hello if I get to a gig.

Al's new album has been recorded this year with a top notch drummer, Leigh Stothard, and meself on bass. We all (even the producer) had a good laugh doing the BVs. I've not been on cdbaby before, although one or two albums are available in download formats. Quite chuffed! A few second samples of each track. Fretless Overwater in action! http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/AlDickinson Edit for itunes link. Probably much ado about nothing, but nice all the same!
By the time you sell a cab for £500 and take of the VAT its just over £400 Speakers wont be quite as expensive as you quote because you will get OEM prices A sheet of ply is going to cost you £50, to which you must add glue, screws, sockets, handles, corners, speakers, a unit to build them in, telephone, rent, rates. electricity you have to market them. Its hard work selling stuff direct because people want to see and try them. If you live in Portsmouth and the stuff is made in liverpool, how do you try them out or do you beleive word of mouth. If you sell through a shop, the shop is going to want to make a profit. How many will you sell a year, Sorry, making cabs is not a short cut to making a million.
P'raps Alexclaber would like to comment here? His direct marketing has these days extended to Barefaced On Tour.. well worth getting on the list, with no commitment to buy! BEWARE.. you might just fall in love!

I ysu the EA CXL 1x10 with concentric horn, sometimes on its own for smaller gigs. Top notch.. feels to weigh as much as the 1x12 version! I think now only available used, but there's bound to be a new version.
-
I'm not 100% sure on this point, but ref. selling gear later, I think that if you've claimed it as a capital expenditure (i.e. it's machinery!) then the proceeds of selling it come under Capital Gains Tax, for which there is a separate allowance. Other items like profits (and losses) from buying and selling shares also get lumped into CGT>

Shipping prices from Ireland have gone through the ROOF
hubrad replied to Ataraxia2320's topic in Bass Guitars
Alot of the international carriers we use at the shop changed their pricing format a year or so back; rather than just weight it's down to size(!) so a guitar or bass costs half a fortune to ship around these days. Ironically it now costs almost the same to send a gigbag with no guitar! -
I use a cheap Yamaha footswitch that has metal casing, I think it came with a 4-track tape recorder I had once. I'm not sure it's exactly the right one as I do have to double-click it to mute.
That'll be a Latching switch then. Non-Latching will be the thing for both of you. We have them at Cleckheaton!
