Hehe! I've got threee fretless, plus the one I'm wanting to shift on. And a fretted bass for memergencies, but that's for sale too!
-
I've usually found myself locking into the snare for the overall groove, but the hat work is kind of fine tuning on that.. perhaps similar to the difference between a song played on straight M/m chords and one with 9ths and such? Besides anything else, the kick is often the hardest to hear when standing alongside.
I just wondered if anyone had let it go down all the way, and if it buzzed and clacked and choked like a set of eaten up frets do.
Yup, it does eventually.

I've always had ebony board fretless; even ebony eventually wears enough to produce the fretless equivalent of fretbuzz. Then it's a skim and you're as new again. As previous posters say, it depends how you play, how hard, how much and what strings. Roundwound are the worst, but if that's your sound you live with the wear issues. These days I mostly use halfrounds and flats, but more on tone than wear - less wear is a bonus! You can always learn to do your own skimming!

Nice one! My colleagues just crowded around for an admiring look.

A mate of mine who works at a PA company in Bradford reckons Precision Design are the speakers of the moment. http://www.precision-devices.com/ I don't know off hand what Alex uses in Barefaced, but from reading his blurb the cabinet itself will make a massive difference.
I'm really looking forward to seeing the finished instruments & a 5 string fretless would really be of interest. The only thing I'm not too keen on is how pointy the top horn is, the size is fine but if it was squared off a little so it didn't look 80's (like the tip of most Overwater top horns).
I'm really into my 5 string FLs... I chopped the head off my original one, which was basically a P copy. Improved the balance no end, if you pardon the pun! The Overwater Progress III, which has that bit more pointy horn going on, balances beautifully.. it's not just held there by art, you know but still I find it pleasing to behold. Even their Jazz 5, which doesn't look so out of the ordinary, balances spot on which is great for a half-ton bass. Here's hoping for a 5FL in the range - not enough affordable ones around IMHO.

To the person that received my free set of La Bella flatwounds...
Hmm... Bad manners and taking the piss are fairly normal on here IME
I'd disagree with this; take Alex's wonderful gesture last year of letting loads of us try out a Barefaced Compact cab. For free and gratis! This is generally the coolest of fora; I suppose there will be exceptions. I've bought a few bits and bats on here, and have left feedback where requested although quite a few folks don't seem too worried about such things. Please let me know if I forgot! I get the impression that any behaviour considered too outrageous gets kinda self-policed in a name and shame operation - in a group that thrives on trust and bonhomie this seems pretty good. Long live BC! -
My opinion isn't important. I'm not likely to need one.
Doesn't sound right though! Sounds like more Es Gs and As to me.

If the source is German, H = B. Just to confuse us, B = Bb. Think that's the way round.

As an Overwater fan and player, I'm quite excited about these - Having spoken to Chris, I'm looking forward to getting me hands around one sometime to see what a job it's been possible to do at the price. Everything he says suggests he's going about this the right way and wants more than just a cheapy with the name on the headstock. If the new models are anywhere even vaguely approaching the quality of the Progress and Jazz range they'll be sock-blower-offers! As someone said earlier, if you can get a good 5 string fretless into this price range.. we could convert more players to the path of fretlessness!
-
If you change strings alot then yes! Especially useful on double bass. I made one out of scrap wood (!) then found a production model about a month later.. I'll try to find the brand.
-
Or if on a strict (or non-existent) budget, borrow an old full-range cab - PA or monitor cab and wire your existing amp to that instead of the internal speaker. The speaker is usually the especially weak link in the really basic combos. Otherwise I quite agree with all above - get a better combo as it will give instant results!

I have taken the plunge. WAV 4 on the way!

Nice one FM.. you'll have to change your name now! -
I started on a fretless and it's never let go yet! My tip would be to consciously not play the fretted one at all for a while. That way you'll get the hang of all your regular technique on the fretless. I think it was Steve Bailey who talked about the typical, normally fretted player.. pick up the fretless for one song and go all slidy because suddenly you can. Then put down the FL and back to normal. If you play FL for the whole gig you can slide if you want to but (and this is the point) YOU DON'T HAVE TO! SB said a big compliment was when people started saying 'oh, I never realised you were playing a fretless'.
After most gigs in my case ;-)
Maann! After a gig is usually the time I'm most in love with playing! Another big +1 to not selling your gear Linus; maybe thin down if you're getting into other things while you 'rest', but make sure you keep at least one full setup so it's always there to go back to. Best wishes at this trying time.

Hmm.. I'm not allowed to vote for both! My thumb comes to rest in various places and positions, depending on which string I'm playing and what kind of tone I'm after.. kinda random!
-
Even after it's been explained to me, I still don't fully understand why ply is cheaper than solid.. surely all that sawing and glueing has to cost rather alot?
-
Just run that middle line again.. getting A FEW 4 strings??

Just had the sales guy from Shine in the shop yesterday, and he mentioned that model in passing - RRP would be around the late GBP500s if that helps. He said it's really good, but then he would, wouldn't he? I've never had one in my hands, but if I can get him to pop one in the car next time he visits I fancy a tryout.
