Your RV5 is precisely the same as mine. Nice, aren't they? Massive tone, and very slappable for a 5er.
-
Interesting to see that he actually slaps the bit where I wimp out and use hammer ons. Great looking/sounding Precision.
-
I love them to bits, and maybe that's why I find the whole Specials reunion thing a bit depressing. Terry H looks very old these days and his voice isn't what it was. The sight of them with Lily Allen at Glastonbury made me want to vom tbh.

Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. The verse part is pretty straightforward, albeit with some timing subtleties. But the notoriously tricky horn break (which repeats every chorus) was a right b*st*rd. Took about four hours to nail it. Being able to play it is sweeeet though, and now I'm annoying the hell out of my girlfriend with it. Sounds great on a Precision.

I had the temerity to mildly question his version of 'Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick' and got pretty flamed by others for it - both in the comments section and by him privately. He is very good technically, but no more perfect than the rest of us.

A few months ago I was in Charlie Chandler's shop noodling away on an original mojo-laden 67 Precision. I thought I'd try the '62 MIJ reissue hanging next to it by way of comparison. It was no contest. I walked out with the MIJ, £1000 price difference, and a big grin on my face. Since then I've hardly played any of my other basses - that MIJ '62 reissue is incredibly well built and sounds completely perfect. To say that if it's not US then it's not a proper Precision is bollocks IMHO...
I hadn't considered Sadowsky, a quick look on the Gallery website reveals this pretty looking thing. http://www.thebassgallery.com/sadowskyuv70.html Very nice !.
I own that bass. In fact I bought it about a year and a half ago, but they never updated the pics... Sadowskys cut through a mix like no other Jazz. I like my US '78 and Jap 72 reissues, but they haven't had much playtime since I bought the Sado.

Prices for some basses and/or manufacturers seem to have fallen further than others. Stingrays have had a bad time, as have (I suspect) Warwicks. Perhaps good Fenders and some others may hold up a little better. Perhaps that's just wishful thinking...

How do you mean WoT? Do you prefer the original bridges? Just wondering about upgrading my Jap '62 reissue to a Badass y'see... Thanks
Hello! Brother Jones wanted me to keep it for him until the end of the month, but he is not replying to my private messages, and the end of the month is in two days! So yes, it is still on the shelf! Please PM me for more details.
Sorry - only got back from holiday yesterday and forgot about this. My bad...

The later model US Fender 5s were a big improvement on the early ones - not least because they changed the string retainer layout on the headstock and gave the B string (or the B and the E...can't remember) it's own retainer. The early ones were very hit and miss. I was lucky enought to find a mint second-hand Sadowsky Metro 5 on the 'bay a few months ago. Can't recommend them enough.
-
Chaps - I'm really loving my Jap '62 Precision at the moment. But the sizeable drop in output between it and my Sadowskys is becoming a problem, and I'd like to find a pickup with a bit more oomph. Can anyone make some recommendations please? I'm not mad keen on anything too 'hi-fi' ish and don't want to be fitting matteries - just looking for a good, high output passive, vaguely 'vintage sounding' passive pup. Many thanks Jones

The bass cellar - denmark street
Brother Jones replied to budget bassist's topic in General Discussion
The Bass Cellar fully deserve to go out of business ASAP. The most useless, unhelpful bunch of nonentities around. Music Ground in Leeds were pretty similar as far as I recall from twenty years ago. i wonder if they are in some way related? Big up for the Gallery. Nice guys; helpful and knowledgeable. That's why I bought me Sadowsky there tbh... -
