Looking for a good dual band compressor for not a lot of money
BottomEndian replied to goblin's topic in Effects
Again, it requires a bit of a budget-stretch (and I believe it's actually three-band), but the TC Electronic Nova Dynamics is rather lovely and it includes a gate too. -
Guitarists who don't know what they are playing
Odd. If you can sight read for cello, shurely you can sight read for bass. Its the same clef. I guess you mean that, because the bass is tuned in fourths, you can't make the hands do what the eyes are telling you?
That's exactly it, or at least that's what I found. I've read music since I was about 6, and I consider it my second language, in which I'm pretty fluent. Stick a sheet in front of me, and I'll be able to sing it back at you, or play it on the piano, usually bang-on first time unless it's proper fly-diarrhoea. Personally (until a couple of years ago when I sat down and really started to put the effort in on bass, reading-wise), I found it difficult to make the transition to reading music on a bass guitar because of the multiple options for selecting the same note on different strings, while trying to avoid changing position every other beat. "Do I play the C at the 3rd fret on the A or the 8th fret on the E? Well... looking ahead a couple of bars, I'll need to be down at the 1st for that F, so I guess I'll stick down low." That sort of thing took me a while to get used to (especially sight-reading at speed, needing to scan a few bars ahead at all times), having come from a fixed-position background: there's only one place to play a middle C on a piano. -
I always called them stanzas! You know, music! The lines with blobs and lines drawn on them!
Ah, staves! I'm with you now. -
...I do find myself picturing stanzas in my brain when I'm jamming at home.
Are you sure you mean stanzas? I mean, I've got no problem with you visualising stanzas. I'm just... confused. -
My psychic powers relied on Google, by the way: That the right clip?

My psychic powers tell me it's a Gibson... Quite possibly a Ripper...
I had a feeling that they wouldn't offer the Contemporary J 5 in black... damn. Blue is just a tad 'in-your-face' for me. As for the Elite 5, one of the seller's in Overwaters 'suppliers' list has it listed for sale on their website... Hopefully the response will be good news and not a 'we have it listed but there's a wait of X number of weeks'
Yeah, I noticed Bass Merchant have it listed... but with a picture of a 4-string. Fingers crossed for you.
Just sent an email to one of the companies on the seller's list regarding the Elite 5. Exciting times Also, does anyone know if the Contemporary J 5 comes in Trans Black, or is just Trans Blue, because I've only seen the 5er in Trans Blue?
Not saying the Tanglewood website is pure gospel, but there's no Elite 5 listed on it yet, even though Overwater's site says the Elite is 4- or 5-string. Also no Contemporary J 5 in black.
...so if you pass tunes on by singing, humming or whistling them it's an oral tradition as well as an aural one, whereas if you pass them on by playing them, it can only really be described as 'aural' (unless you play them on a wind instrument???).
A certain Mr Hendrix begs to differ: Aaaaaaaaaaaaanyway... I've been playing recently with a guitarist who not only generally doesn't know what notes/chords she's playing, but also uses loads of non-standard tunings, multiple capos and complex voicings (so no chance of hand-watching to catch the chords). Doesn't stop her being a cracking songwriter though. It's quite a workout for my ear. Much as it irks me at times, it just wouldn't be the same if she brought along a chord sheet every time she wrote a new song. Going back to the original issue, if someone's going to try to play along to chord sheets, it behoves them to learn enough chords to get through the songs. Turning a Cadd9 into a C5 is just... no. No, no, no. -
Reverend are back in the bass business.....!
BottomEndian replied to wateroftyne's topic in Bass Guitars
They're nice-looking instruments, in a kind of retro-ish-Jetsons way... but IMO the tuner buttons look outlandish on such a small headstock, especially on the Mercalli 5ers. -
I've got a TC RS112 cab just sitting around at home if you're interested, Gareth. I was going to stick a FS thread up soon anyway. PM me if you're interested. Oh, and it's in VGC, ya picky bugger ye.

Holy moly! Just re-checked it and the title's been changed! Anybody here responsible?
It's obvious bollocks/stupidity - but these were officially licensed by Steinberger, so if they pull this they'd better get busy removing every Squier listing that mentions Fender.
It wouldn't be a problem if it mentioned Steinberger as part of a listing for a Hohner bass. It'd be good if it did, in fact; as you say, they're officially licensed, and it says "Steinberger" at least twice on the instrument. I honestly can't decide if the seller's being intentionally misleading or just colossally thick. I suspect an even mix of the two.

Behold. Check the listing title. Then check the picture. Then check the seller's username.
The reason I bought a Mactop was because all my work is on the LAMP platform and I couldn't bear the thought of wasting several weeks auditioning an infinite number of Linux window and file managers that each have something I hate about them...
You could, of course, install all of them on the MBP as a multi-boot system. Then whichever system you choose to boot into, you can revel in the fury and frustration created by its foibles. Seriously, though, I don't envy you programmers and developers. My hat goes off to you all.
It almost seems like nobody at Apple expected their users to need to manipulate a lot of files or navigate a hierarchical file structure.
Well, I think you're bang on the money there (although I've never encountered the column-view-folder-creation problem... just tried it and it works fine for me, creating folders where I expect them to go). OS X seems to be built for idiots like me* who don't really want to delve too far into the inner workings. It suits me nicely; I see it as a playground. In my day-to-day life, there are only two things that have managed to really boil my piss in OS X: 1) The inability to simply and quickly enter "special" characters like ½. Other OSs, you can usually just do Alt+0189. In OS X, you have to fanny about with character palettes. 5 keystrokes versus at least 30 seconds of clicking and scrolling? I'll take the keystrokes, thanks. 2) WiFi under Snow Leopard seems to take issue with the very concept of DHCP when it's sharing a network with a few other things. My Macs have to have manually-assigned IPs to work. * I used to be quite UNIX-literate, having spent my whole degree battling with CLIs and terrible X-Window systems, trying desperately to get L[sup]A[/sup]T[sub]E[/sub]X to simply compile a single fecking equation. Years of domestic Windows and Mac drudgery have dulled my computer senses to the point that a CLI makes me nervy. *sigh*
ahh i see what you mean and from your sig i see that it's yours now, how's it going? still in love?
For under £400, it's pure class. It's filled a little gap in my arsenal (as it were), seeing as it's my only passive bass. It's definitely going to be making an appearance on some recordings I'm starting work on soon. I'll get some porn shots up soon when I get a chance.
-
they did say that they had a passive jazz in as well but they sold it last week, they didn't mention it was a 5 though!
It wasn't. I meant they had 5 Tanglewaters in stock.
-
thought i'd post here, mainly as a note to those in the north east, core music in hexham has 4 tanglewaters in stock, went in to play the blackburst deluxe 5 (£700) and had a quick go on the natural elite 4 (£750), they also had an artist in red (£600)and a contemporary j (£580) as well, the basses were all wonderful but i'm not a great fan of the blackburst so i'm going to wait for the next batch (anyone know what other colours are being offered for the deluxe? and when the elite will be appearing in 5?)
Bwahaa! They had 5 in stock this time last week. Clearly the quality issues I took exception to aren't as obvious as I thought then. I must be a pickier bugger than I thought.

I think this is usually a pretty good indicator.
