Why Doesn't Anyone Change the Bridge on a MM Stingray ?
BottomEndian replied to WHUFC BASS's topic in Bass Guitars
A lot of Rays have the serial number on the bridge. You change the bridge, you remove the verifiability of provenance/authenticity/whatever. Of course, you could just swap bridges with another Ray to make yours look older/newer/more desirable. -
Use a credit card to push the string down on the 12th!
That's a great idea! Nice small contact area. -
You should have sent them outside and told them to come back in and say it properly.
I amaze myself with my ability to keep my mouth shut sometimes. The only time I've ever lost it with a customer was one who walked in and greeted me thus: "Hello, boy."

setting intonation on fretless bass
Well, instead of using my finger to fret at the 12th, I put the capo on which I can make sure is perpendicular to the neck across all the strings and each time I put it back on it goes it goes in the same place. Whenever I just finger the 12th fret I end up with some variation as I work down the strings... Might just be me though eh
Ah, right, I'm with you. I'll have to try that next time I'm having a tweak! -
Harmonics is the only way I know but there are some subtleties to setting up a fretless. This page from the Gary Willis setup manual may be useful: http://www.garywillis.com/pages/bass/bassm...ntonation4.html
Y'see, I've seen that Gary Willis thing a few times, and I've heard people say that as well, but I've had a few lined fretlesses and not one of them has had me changing my finger position in relation to the lines as I move up or down the neck. They've all been possible to set up so they're bang-on in tune with the middle of my finger on each line (and that's with an accurate strobe tuner). You can, of course, set it up like Gary Willis so your finger's in the same position behind the line as it would be on a fretted bass, but IME/IMO it's just personal preference. And I don't really use harmonics to set intonation. Just make sure the open string's in tune, and then use your tuner to make sure the 12th fret's in tune. -
How do you get a bass into that kind of state? I can understand that the finish might wear in the areas where it comes into contact with moving arms etc., but how do you wear the finish off the whole front of the bass?
-
Why oh why oh why oh why do people put "brought" when they mean "bought". I see it all the bleedin' time and it gets on my hairy tits. I'm not being racist or facetious with this but as a Scot I wonder if it is a thing that English people commonly say?
Not round these parts... but then again, I don't understand half the things that get said round these parts.
Last time I played there the set-up did not include drums, but we had a big PA rig and every member of the band was either mic'd, playing with a pick-up or DI'd from an amp in it, so they are pretty reasonable. REALLY nice venue to play too, good atmosphere and good space (maybe a bit small, but you want intimate gigs for acoustic stuff )
Excellent! Good to know.
