The parrallel strings are totally weird.
+1 I've only had a quick noodle on one, but it was the oddest quick noodle I've had in my life. Odd neck profile, and the lack of taper was really disconcerting. Very "lively" feel in the hands, though, which was nice. All that said, Gareth, they had a couple of Rics in GuitarGuitar the other day when I looked in, so why don't you go and try one out? Easy!
  2.
I have heard you can't polish a jobby, but I'm going to roll this one in glitter
Splendid. Build thread? Pretty please?
  3.
Alan was helping me out with my my "project" which I think you spotted in my Promethean thread a few weeks ago
Ah, the 6-string fretless? Eeeeexcellent.
  4.
Hey dude, saw the component parts of your bass on Sunday last week. It's going to be loverly
You lucky, lucky bugger! Glad to hear it. I'd love to see the body in the flesh. The pictures never quite have enough resolution to make out the grain very well. But the big question is... what were you doing down at Alan's? Do I smell a new build coming on? Anyway, just got this from Alan last night. Holy crap, it's a whole neck: Admittedly, it's not carved yet, but we're getting there.
  5.
funny how it got to £677 then a brand new bidder ( 2...a (0) ) turned up and put down 5 bids in a row to get it...
Place your bets on it being quietly relisted within a few days... I'm such a cynic these days.
  6.
LX is bolt-on. Stage I is neck-thru clearly visible from the front nearly always has PJ pups. Stage II is neck-thru and has a cleverly hidden neck (i.e. from front it looks like a BO) and has JJ pups. You are now forever in my debt.

To add the LX BO 4 string generally has PJ pups (same as NT) whereas the LX and NT 5 strings have JJ/Soapbar pups; SSII will have JJ whether it is a 4 or 5 string... more debt!
The debt grows... but the confusion diminishes. Thanks for the info, you Warwick legend you. It's quite obvious now it's been pointed out! It's one of those "can't see the wood for the trees" things. Really like the look of the Stage II. Very clever. Very expensive. (I did "look after" that P/J for you for about 4 months... does that settle my debt retrospectively? )
  7. If anyone can explain to me the differences between the Streamer LX, Stage I and Stage II (and any other Streamer variants), I'll be forever grateful. Is it just pups/electronics?
  8.
So you posted on a bass forum about a bass that was going cheap and you sound surprised that it has gone up...
I've been watching this for a few days, hoping it'd stay low. Ho hum. So, John, place your bets... what's the final price going to be, and will it be a good price?
  9.
It is actually known as Ovangkol neck, in that it leans more to the thinner side, but has descent width.
Noooo... it is actually known as an ovangkol neck, in that it's made from ovangkol.
  10.
She'll like Ruben
Who doesn't?
  11.
Cruisin' With Ruben and The Jets
Well, that'll lull her into a false sense of security! Good starting point. And probably wise to miss out the first few Mothers albums. IMO, One Size Fits All is a good starting point. Zoot Allures is also very accessible, but the material's not his best IMO. Mrs Endian will almost listen to both of those. (I also think Bongo Fury grooves like a bastard (in a very, very good way), but I know I'm almost alone in that respect.) Also, Ship Arriving Too Late..., but probably leaving out "Drowning Witch" until she's feelin' the Zappa-groove. Hell, why not sit down for a couple of hours with Joe's Garage? A storyline to follow, genuinely funny and some serious tunes on there.
  12.
...even wants me to play her a selection from Zappa's catalogue...
Which albums have you got planned?
  13. And I'll vouch for these being great workhorse amps. Brute-force simplicity. Also, they're internally identical (AFAIK) to the Peavey Max 700. Just a different faceplate. So, for anyone hankering for a Max... this is the same thing!
  14. Intriguing... and, as usual, at the wrong end of the country. I thought he'd hung up his instruments long ago?

Sad, sad news. An absolute gent, and he'll be sorely missed.
  16.
I do distinctly recall a room full of laughter as it was delivered to me. No Matter, as I have Thoroughly Enjoyed Owning this Indescribable Guitar.
I think that abomination may just need to be laid to rest. RIP, hideous tiny fish-bass thingy.
  17. Actually... wasn't this on eBay a few days ago? EDIT: Yes it was, and it sold.
  18.
Someone rip this guys arm off!
I'm thinkin' about it...
  19.
I still don't understand why bass strings are so expensive though, I can't imagine the extra metal and time used to create them equates to the massive price differences from normal guitar strings.
I assume economies of scale come into play as well. Everyone and his blind aunt plays guitar; relatively few people play bass. I imagine that's a big part of why flats are more expensive than rounds too.
  20.
I think you mean "skeptic" though

Indeed I do
Only if you're American! US: skeptic; UK: sceptic. Vive la différence!
  21.
A bit of fine wet and dry (400 or higher maybe? I'd probably start with 800) used wet with a firm block should be able to sort that.
Would that be alright on the ebonol (synthetic) board?
  22.
Surely time to learn to build your own instrument at this point
When it comes to all things woodworky, DIY-ish or even remotely practical, some people have it: And some people don't have it: I don't have it.
  23.
In that situation, it's essentially the only bass available to me in the whole world, and to refuse it would be bonkers.
To be honest, if the only option in the world was a stick with a rubber band nailed to it, I'd take it as long as it could go low enough.
  24.
Who on BC would accept this bass as their one and only if forced to give up the rest of their gear?
If forced to give up the rest of my gear, and someone gave me that as my only bass option, then hell yes. In that situation, it's essentially the only bass available to me in the whole world, and to refuse it would be bonkers. It's still a bass, and not a bad one at that. Not my first choice by any stretch (lacking a string and riddled with frets ), but I'd make it work for me. After all, I'd have the whole of the rest of my life with just the one bass.
