My First Ever Walking Bass Line - Improvised with my band.
BottomEndian replied to xilddx's topic in Recording
OK, so Kit wants to do a cover of Self-Righteous Suicide by System of a Down (I've never heard the original)
Like Bilbo, I'll give it a listen later (not that I'm a "cat" by any definition )... but I'm assuming it's actually "Chop Suey!" by SoaD. The phrase "self-righteous suicide" features in the chorus, but it's not the song title. Right. That's my pedantry done for the day. [Unless they actually did do a song with that name... but Google hasn't turned it up.] -
Fretless set up squier vintage modified!
I think you could be right, its not so predominant through an amp, maybe I need to man up a bit hahahaha. I only really play with it at home through as practice amp, so I'm probably getting that part acoustic part amp sound.
If you can, try it loud through headphones! -
An alternative viewpoint: My neck buzzes loads, I've learned to control it when I don't want it and to use it well when I do.
+1. One man's buzz is another man's mwaaah. Taming it when you want to is half the battle of learning to play fretless. Is the sound still coming through as an annoying buzz when you're plugged in and cranked up (masking the direct acoustic noise off the board)? Or is it just that lovely, throaty growl? Both my fretlesses can sound pretty rank acoustically (depending on how ham-fisted I'm being ), but the rattle and buzz just becomes mwaaah when I plug in. -
Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
BottomEndian replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Thanks, Jon! Enlightening, as ever. Never occurred to me to Google the product code. I'd assumed that when something got rebadged, the product code would change too! Looks like JHS and Kimbara are names to look out for too then. -

Not a bass (and obviously after the fact), but this Fresher FX-309G guitar just finished on eBay. Not really come across Fresher before, and the 3-band EQ seems pretty forward-thinking for a late-70s guitar. Any further info on Fresher guitars, anyone? Are they generally good/OK/heaps-o'-sh*te? Was this a good price? [Strange sub-plot: A friend of mine was bidding on this Fresher, but he didn't get it. He'd messaged the seller to find out if the truss rod was turning happily. The seller responded saying that it didn't seem to have a truss rod (having looked under the cover on the headstock, and everywhere else). True? False? Incompetence? I'd have thought it couldn't last 30 years under string tension without a truss rod (without bowing unplayably) unless the neck was as deep as it was wide. ] -
That's usually my cue to sit up and take notice. A little investigation required I think.
"I'll give you twenty-one... twenty-one... twenty-one..." Ahhhhh. Love it. If you find that Tilt floats your boat, try The Drift. There's one track that involves someone punching a slab of meat while Scott screams something about Mussolini.
I've allways been aware of John Giblin, didnt he do that "lady in red" thing? (it wasnt Pino)
He did. Apparently, Pino recorded the original bassline for that song, but after a load of work on the track it didn't fit in any more. John Giblin was passing through town or something and threw down a few takes, and that's what ended up on the record.
-
The man's just fantastic. He even played on Scott Walker's Tilt, which is one of my favourite albums of all time... although it's almost nobody's cup of tea.

Alan's experimenting with the new "G-clamp" headstock style for this one.
I imagine he'd be less happy about the pickup change if he'd already routed the holes for your original pickups
Nowt wrong with a "swimming pool" rout. Big black pickguard and we're away. Nah, the pup change was partially Alan's idea anyway. He's not happy with the volume changes with coil-switching the RFB humbuckers (single -> parallel -> series = quiet -> middle -> LOUD), so he suggested either losing the switching or changing to the switchable triple-coil. The triple-coil intrigued me when I first saw it, so there wasn't much deliberation for me there. With the blendable piezo, I think I've covered all sonic territory. Besides which, I've saved a bit of money off the original spec by simplifying the electronics. Win-win.
-
Oh, and kudos to Alan for having the flexibility to accommodate these changes through the build. It's an organic process, dahling. I've edited the OP to show the changes to the original spec.
-
Latest round of alterations/re-speccing on this build (although from this point it'll be set in stone): No longer two coil-switchable humbuckers... now one of Alan's triple-coils, switchable between humbucker/triple-coil/single-coil. Still with the piezo bridge. Having grown to love the piezo on my Skelf, I've realised that two humbuckers plus piezo is just madness. Unnecessary. Overkill. So it's just one big, bad mega-pickup to do all the magnetic grunt-work, and I'll get to see more of the wood as well. Oh, and I'll only have one switch to contend with, instead of three. And I'm not going to have the Xtender key on the B-string. I've realised that I don't flick between B and A in a single setting, so I can just save a bit of wedge and retune by hand in seconds. The build's coming on now!
Yeah, I saw them in Glasgow on the same tour (with Bong, from your neck of the woods, supporting).
Bong?! Bloody hell, how did they get that support slot? Never really rated them, but I haven't seen them play for a few years. Must have improved somewhat. Good on 'em!

Hell yes. I saw Sunn O))) in Gateshead last December (playing stuff from Monoliths & Dimensions), and it was the most indescribably intense experience of my musical life. It was like being crushed with sound. Apparently they peaked around 150dB in a reasonably small room. Everything was physically shuddering. Just awesome.
in this situation get a tube screameresque pedal and boost your mid range you'll cut through the mud like a chain saw through butter and add alot more definition to the mix. it's alot easier to cut through in the mids rather than try and go lower unless you have alot of money and good transport
+1 to this. If the guitars are scooped, there's loads of room in the mids to come through. The other option is to go the Meshuggah route and tune up to meet the guitarists (in Meshuggah, the 8-string guitars have F# as their low string, so Dick Lövgren tunes up a tone, playing in the same register but with a bass timbre).

I never thought I'd say this about an S2 (never been keen on the body shape)... but that S2 really is sexy as hell. EDIT: Not to mention the fella holding it, of course. RRRAAAWWWRRR.
Just bought Solar Benediction on double vinyl, should have it by Tuesday, why was it disappointing?
Had I come to it with no expectations, I probably would have thought differently, but... It's that thing that happens sometimes with supergroups like this. You know and love the musicians from their various bands, and you think they're brilliant within those bands, but when they come together... the whole just doesn't seem to match up to the sum of the parts. FWIW, much as I love Dale Crover (and I LOVE his drumming with Melvins), I think Chris Hakius (the originally intended drummer) would have worked better in Shrinebuilder, and maybe tied it all together a bit better.
-
Sounds like you need a Shrinebuilder, to make somewhere to put all the amps.
Have to say though... I found the Shrinebuilder album quite disappointing.

Sounds like you need some Sleep... EDIT: In fact, you need an unbroken hour of Sleep, but Youtube won't do that...
These not worth much then?
Oh, I haven't got a clue. I'm just poor at the moment. But there's another one on eBay at the moment at £200 (no bids yet), which might yet tempt me. Looking round the web at the few mentions there are of the Duke, prices seemed to be US$250-350 a few years back, which makes £200 look a lot more sensible. -

Do you consider yourself a BASSIST or a MUSICIAN?
I've come on leaps & bounds as a player in the last few years so I'm a lot more comfortable being described as a musician.
Funny, isn't it? I'd completely go the other way. As I improve on the bass, I feel myself becoming more comfortable describing myself as a bassist. -
