It's stuff like this that makes me want a DB
BottomEndian replied to BottomEndian's topic in General Discussion
I'd buy one if I thought I could play it as well as Danny Thompson does. That, however, is extremely unlikely.....
+1 That should have been my thread subheading... -
That is all.

Best reasonably priced fretted ibanez to defret?
BottomEndian replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
The obvious question that seems to be missing at the moment is: what the budget?
The other obvious question is... how many strings? I know you're Sarah5string, but I remember you mentioning (elsewhere) that you were thinking of a fretless 4-string. -
At a guess (completely uneducated mind you) I would say that the four 12AX7 valves go in the top four wholes of the picture, and the other 2 go in the erm... other two. Just makes sense to e as it looks like the lower two are on the preamp board and the upper four are on the poweramp board Don't take my word as gospel though! I'll try and find something to back up my guesses. EDIT: If you can decipher them, schematics are on post 7 here
Schematics seem to give*: J11 = 12AX7 J12 = 12AU7 J14 = 12AX7 J39 = 12AU7 J2 and J3 aren't specified, so presumably you can whack the two remaining 12AX7s down there. They're the preamp valves, so that kind of makes sense (half the fun of a valve preamp being the testing of different valves). * Caveat: I can read a schematic, but I'm no engineer. I take no responsibility for anything, including my own life.
I bought mine direct from the UK importer which is Sounds Great in Manchester I believe. Speak to Gary up there and if you can't find the number then let me know as I have it on an invoice somewhere!
Cheers. I may have the need to get hold of a hard case soon, so that's good to know. -
I made the same move a month or so back and do have to say that the PT2 is infinitely better as it is angled and also really easy to hide cables and power supply etc. The flight case is a nightmare it is well made but just really big and heavy! I kept that but then also bought a new soft case which I seem to use all the time now and it is great.
Just wondering... where can you buy the Pedaltrain cases separately? -
I don't think I've ever heard any rock that I'd consider truly experimental.

the term covers a vast range: Zorn, Zappa, Can, Throbbing Gristle, Helios Creed, Tomas Kerner etc etc, all can honestly claim to be experimental
Actually, yes. I eat my words. I'm a BIG Zappa fan too. Also, something else I've thought of: put the location in the thread title. When I'm skimming through the "View New Posts" thing, if I see "Bassist wanted" I'll usually not even think about clicking, because the vast, vast majority of such posts on Basschat are based further south. On the other hand, if I see the words Newcastle, Sunderland, Northumberland or North-East, I'll usually click through to the thread, even if it's something I wouldn't usually be interested in. Just a thought.
Im not sure if its the area (sunderland/newcastle area) or the style of music (experimental rock) or if its just a worldwide shortage of good bassists.
Dunno about anyone else, but I find "experimental rock" to be far too nebulous a description. (Besides which, I don't think I've ever heard any rock that I'd consider truly experimental. I suppose something like Sunn O))) might come close... but then again it's still just a couple of guys with guitars.) If you gave a list of influences, or at least bands that you like, that might help give us an idea of what you're up to. Also, I think that most of the Basschatters from the North-East (and there aren't a huge number of us) are pretty much fixed up for bands. And we're mainly too old. Hope that helps. I did appreciate the Fry & Laurie quote though.
Eude, have you checked out the new TC electronic combos? Also here
I considered them for myself, but they're HEAVY. Over 30kg.

I know it doesn't tick a couple of your boxes (only 60W, no speaker out AFAIK), but there's the EBS Session 60. And I dunno if it fits in with your notion of "pro level", but I think there's a Line 6 Lowdown tiltback combo around the 100-150W range. Depends on whether you like the models. I've just parted from a Line 6 Lowdown Studio 110 in favour of a TC RS112 to pair with my LMII, purely because I prefer the sounds I can get from the MarkBass. Knowing that you like the MarkBass sound, you might not like the Lowdown models. Both the EBS and Line 6 would leave you change to spare from your budget. EDIT: This is the Line 6 (LD150), but it's over 40lbs. So I've given you two suggestions that don't really fulfil your criteria. I'll STFU now.
easy 1 person lift ... 30kgs
Does... not... compute... Maybe I'm a weedy little thing (in fact, I know I am), but 30kg ain't an easy lift for me.
Did a gig on Sunday... one of those acoustic freaky things occurred in that bass was inauduble where I was standing, but fine out front. I know the set off-by-heart, but I couldn't hear a note I was playing.
I sincerely hope you weren't playing fretless...

Gaf bought my Line 6 Lowdown Studio 110. What a top guy. Simple, smooth stuff with quick payment and good communication. Wouldn't hesitate to do business with Gaf again. He even waited for a week while I waited for my RS112 to turn up, because I didn't want to be mini-rig-less.

Hipshot Bass Xtender / D-Tuner owners
Thanks for your help, guys. Cheers.
Smut aside (for once in my life), if you have nut-related tuning issues with the Xtender, follow Dave's sage advice: Tune the E-string slightly flat, flick down then up again, and you're set. Also, this feels strangely appropriate to this thread: -
Use Vaseline on the extender's contact points and put a wee bit of pencil lead dust in the nut groove for dry lubrication.
:brow: -
That's what I ended up ordering yesterday evening.
Another few basses have caught my eye. Its the Ibanez BTB300...

In a couple of months or so, when I have the money, I'm going to check out ebay and the forum for a used bass like the BTB400 or something.
I used to have a BTB-range Ibanez. Great-looking and great-sounding bass, but just be aware that they're 35" scale and they feel like it. Standard scale length (distance from nut to bridge) on your average bog-standard bass is 34", which isn't an enormous difference on a well-designed bass... but the BTB range basses feel huge. It's a long, long way to the nut. If you're a big person, you'll probably be fine, but the combination of wider fret spacings and the reach down to the lower frets was just too much for me. Just something to bear in mind. Try before you buy!
