2. I only figured that out after doing it the wrong way round.
 3. Play all the stuff you'd usually play on a fretted bass. Don't concentrate on the differences; concentrate on the common ground. When you've got that sorted... then you can slide and swoop around like a tit.
 4.
Sorry to sound like a w***er, but apart from the bridge and headstock, i'm having a tough time distinguishing between the cutlass and a standard sort of stingray?
Cutlass = graphite-necked Stingray EDIT: Beaten by seconds!
 5.
In the grand scheme of things, not that heavy; around 25kg, IIRC. I can get it on the bathroom scales tonight for a better figure.
Well, that was the longest night of my life. Hmmm. No, I just completely forgot about this. Got it on the bathroom scales this morning. Around 28/29 kg. So... er... BUMP!

 7.
And I don't think Interparcel is a courier service as such, they forward your parcels to other actual courier companys who do the actualy delivery.
Mmmm, sort of. They're more of a broker. You give them the shipment details (number of packages, weight and dimensions) and they give you a bunch of quotes. They then book the shipment on your behalf with the courier company whose quote you choose. So if you choose one of the UPS options, it gets picked up by UPS and delivered by UPS. Just like if you'd sent it yourself via UPS, but cheaper because Interparcel deal in such large volumes that they get big bulk discounts. So the parcel doesn't go through any extra hands. I use Interparcel's UPS services all the time (and note that their "own-brand" options are the UPS ones: "Interparcel Economy" is particularly good value), and I've never had a problem. But as with all courier/delivery services, the service you receive is largely dependent on the attitude of the individual doing the pick-up and the individual doing the delivery. Round our way, we've got an absolutely top-notch UPS driver, so I'm happy with that. On the opposite side of the coin, I'd never send anything from Tynedale using the APC driver. As the Bass Doc would say... what a fathead.
 8.
Quick rule of thumb, if you don't like listening to the music, chances are you won't enjoy playing it.
I don't like listening to Spanish choral music from the Counter-Reformation period... but by 'eck I like singing it. Listening and performing are two utterly different things. Maybe I get it from years of growing up in school orchestras, bands and choirs. It was a real rarity to play something I genuinely liked to listen to, but the buzz of performing in an ensemble made that dwindle into insignificance for me. That's always stuck with me. I'd be happy playing anything, as long as I was playing with people.
 9. Gah, image. We're cursed by the fact that we play heavy stuff, but we're a couple of short-haired, bespectacled, quiet, slightly socially awkward guys without tattoos. Even though I'm sure it'd help us get gigs if we got tattooed to the hilt and grew our hair down to our navels (and I mean sure, because I've seen us get overlooked before in favour of the lairy, hairy metal guys), I have no desire to do so. I mean... I'd look like a tit. Still, it's nice to see the reaction we get when we do play. A sort of, "Well, I'd never have guessed that these guys who look like accountants could make such an awesome, heavy noise." Always lots of appreciative noise at the end of the set. Lots of, "I really liked that song with the screaming."
 10.
Ah, yay! I'll look forward to it.
If you're really lucky, I'll include some of my speciality combinations: arsebiscuits, arseflaps, c*ckarse, arsep*ss... that sort of thing.
 11.
Random aside - when did 'ass' replace 'arse'? No-one says 'arse' anymore, and it makes me sad.
I say "arse". A lot. Next time I see you, I'll make sure to slip in an arse here and there. As it were.
 12.
Does that mean you're not interested in my offer of bass groovage?
Sorry, I'm just used to jumping on offers of drummers like a dog on grilled liver. Everything else is just peripheral. We've got BTGAndy coming along for a jam on Friday, so that'll give us an idea as to whether it's an avenue worth pursuing... or whether I need to carry on the old dog -> liver thing. If the avenue looks sensible, then expect a PM, Mr Conan sir!
 13.
Ironically, I know a drummer who would be able to fill your slot....
Ooooh, it's a while since I've had an offer like that. Well, we're keeping options open (never say no to a good drummer!), so if he/she would be genuinely interested in making some colossal noise with a couple of shambolic gentlemen around the age of 30, PM me and I'll give you my contact details to pass on.
 14.
I's like to pop along for a jam, it sounds interesting. Where do you practice?
PMd!
 15.
An earlier commenter said very few players that he had come across could read , clearly He'd not come across any of the session men who produce a good deal of what we actually listen to these days.
Looking back, I can't find anyone who's said that, so I'm wondering if you've misunderstood my comment (which would be completely understandable, given that I didn't phrase it very clearly ):
Do these people really exist? Serious question. I've never come across anyone in the rock/pop/jazz world who needed to read to play something.
Just to clarify... I meant that I've never come across anyone in the rock/pop/jazz world who was lost without a chart. They can all busk/play by ear, but the ones that can read can also read. Personally, I find it hard to play with people who don't have at least a basic grasp of rhythmic notation; it takes much longer to get complex rhythmic patterns across to them. If they can sight-read well, then I can stick a chart of fly-s**t down in front of them and we can get grooving straight away. Love it.
 16.
anyone that needs to read to play
Do these people really exist? Serious question. I've never come across anyone in the rock/pop/jazz world who needed to read to play something.
 17.
Well, there's a certain Mr Jackson taking up a large proportion of the cover...
BTW, his Fodera must be absolutely massive! I mean, it looks big on him, and he's a biiiig guy. And no, "Fodera" isn't a euphemism. Not in this case, anyway.
 18.
The first thing?
Well, there's a certain Mr Jackson taking up a large proportion of the cover... but yeah. The first thing. My eye's drawn to oddness and errors, and that was like a magnet.
And somehow the mag feels like a Warwick Brochure.
This I would agree with. Their "sound of wood" is becoming deafening in print.
 19.
Sounds like fun hahah. Im pretty busy with 2 bands at the moment but ill have a think.
If it works as a sweetener, I can throw in the offer of bringing my Barefaced Vintage along so you can hear it in action. And my SUB, in case you don't have a bass sitting around tuned to drop-C.
 20. Haven't had a chance for a good look through yet (although I've had a good look at Melissa Auf der Maur, and I'm not usually one for ogling women... ), but it looks like there's plenty in there. Hooray! One niggle (it's becoming a monthly tradition for me ): I know Ms Auf der Maur has a lower-case "d" on "der"... but when it's set all-caps? Really? MELISSA AUF dER MAUR looks really, really odd on the cover. OK, that's major, major nit-picking, but it's the first thing I saw.
 21.
Good story. Maybe you should put that on the Wiki page.
The first rule of Wikipedia is that you do not talk about Wikip... No wait, it's that you don't edit pages about yourself. You'll be hounded out, stripped and beaten.
 22. I love this bit:
Preferring to concentrate on substance over style, the band members were also renowned for wearing their glasses on stage.
Personally, I wear my glasses on stage so I can see what the f*** I'm doing. I'm not renowned for it, though. Nor am I renowned for knowing what the f*** I'm doing, so maybe I should just chuck the specs and look cool.
 23. And we're off! The body blank, all glued up and ready for cutting: And cut:
 24. My guitarist and I are slowly coming to the realisation that all the good drummers in the North East are fully occupied at the moment. Last time we got a new drummer, it took nearly 18 months to find one who could cope with the irregular time signatures... and even then he never really got the "feel" or the chunkiness. But the thing is, I can drum reasonably well, with the right feel, and time signatures don't bother me one iota. So, possibly as nothing more than an abortive experiment, I'll be moving behind the kit... so we're looking for a bassist. If there's anyone who'd like to come along and have a bash, let me know. This is from the advert we've been running while looking for a drummer, but obviously it all still applies:
Detuned, loud, fuzzy, multi-rhythmic, riff-orientated heaviness with whatever else we feel like throwing in. Influences include: Melvins, Eyehategod, Acid King, Tool, Zappa, Meshuggah, Led Zeppelin, Kyuss, Sleep, Helmet, King Crimson, Jeff Beck. MUST be able to groove in odd time signatures.
IMO, it's a lot easier for a bassist to hit the groove in a weird time signature if the drummer's got the backbone bashing out there. So don't get too put off by the last sentence in that quote. Even if you just want to come along for a single super-heavy down-tuned jam -- no commitment, no strings attached -- it'd help us decide if this is even a good idea.
