Because I play a lot of massive, chunky, stonery, doomy, riffy stuff, about 95% of the time I'm just doubling the guitar riffs. Anything else can sound really... silly, to be honest. Occasionally, I'll add harmonies to the guitar line -- cheesy, but nice. That said, when I throw in a little fill or a solo section, there's always a little grin from the guitarist. Whether it's a "that was awesome" smile or a "you stupid tw*t" smile... it's hard to tell. With the slower, more ambient stuff I do, I've got free rein to do what the hell I want, and I love it.

Never heard it before this thread started. Looked on Youtube. Lost 3 minutes of my life to a pile of turgid arsewater.

What notes can I play over a B7 Chord
BottomEndian replied to Linus27's topic in Theory and Technique
I am doing a walking bass line over a Bb7 chord.
Hold on a minute. I don't want to sound patronising, and I certainly don't mean it as such, but... you don't mean B7 or Bm7 do you? The flat symbol in Bb7 refers to the B, not the 7. From the sequence of root notes you've posted, it looks like you're in the key of G, in which case Bm7 fits nicely -- it's chord III in G. If the chord's actually Bm7 (notes: B, D, F#, A), then your walking notes will fit OK. If it's B7 (notes: B, D#, F#, A), then it'll still sound OKish, but the flattened 3rd (D) in the bass might cause a few winces on a strong beat. I guess we'll find out when you post the recording. EDIT: Paul beat me to it while I was posting! Great minds... -
Yeah, I just realised that after I posted. If I was to play just the root notes then they are, G, F#, E, B, E (plus one other chord at end but can't remember) Not sure if that helps
I think we're probably more confused now! Best bet: post up that rough recording. -
OK let's just try to find the very essence of jazz (in all its forms):...[snip]
Major, that's the best explanation I've ever seen of what jazz actually is. Thank you! -
...which is basically B [s]harmonic[/s] natural minor without a 2nd...
And I could have added B Phrygian or B Aeolian as alternative names (again, both without the 2nd degree of the scale/mode). -
I am doing a walking bass line over a Bb7 chord. At the moment I am playing B, D, E, F#, G, A, B, D
Good lord. That's quite a... fruity choice. Bb7 contains Bb, D, F and Ab. So if you're playing your notes there (which is basically B [s]harmonic[/s] natural minor without a 2nd), you'll have clashes on the B, F# and A, and the E might sound a little fruity as well (as the sharpened 4th over the Bb7), although it will probably fit. As for what notes you "should" play, well... if it sounds good, don't worry. A lot of it's about context -- what's before and what comes next? I'm sure a few of the jazzers will be along to suggest some options. EDIT: to get the damn scale name right -
Is it still cool upstairs, you used to be able to get away with a cheeky smoke in there.
Haven't been in years, but I doubt it. But you might enjoy the nostalgia before the wrecking ball arrives... (three weeks, I think) Anyway, bit of a thread derail there. My bad. Less OT (On the Toon) and more OT (On Topic).
He would probably get barred for putting up some weird installation art in the beer garden.
It's a shame you've moved back to Newcastle just as the Musical Restaurant has ceased to be. You might have enjoyed it. That's exactly the sort of thing that happened there -- always a strange mixture of performance art, industrial noise, turgid singer-songwriters and jam sessions. Hopefully they'll get a new venue sorted out and be up and running again soon.

I read Skank's comment as a continuation of yours, YouMa:
it would be nice to have oblique strategy cards at jam nights where the next band can for instance only play reggae, the next funk, folk, or maybe even some Brian Eno
Hence my suggestion. Anyhoo, semantics aside, as an Eno fan myself, I heartily applaud the idea of an Oblique Jam Night. Let's do it!
Owain, I don't know why your handles appear to be in a different place to Merton's! However they shouldn't be in the same place as 'thestick's. Alex
Ah, right. I'll just tell Roqsolid where to put the holes anyway. Just doing a bit of pointless research!
Recieved my cover today, very good fit but the side handle slots do not line up, as you say but you can still use them as its not by much.
Is that for a Vintage? EDIT: Looked back up the thread and saw that it is indeed for a Vintage. Can you measure the distance from the top of the cab to the top of the side handles?

Bought Pete's Hipshot Xtender. Smooth, fast and well packaged for the journey. The kitchen roll gave me a little insight into Pete's domestic life... Top fella. Would buy again... if I had any money.
The guy selling this (Dave Wilson) is a great luthier so this will be set-up fantastically well. I've seen this in the flesh but never got the chance to play it.
I've seen the name Dave Wilson many, many times, but I never realised he was so nearby! I've got one or two bits of work I might throw Haltwhistle-way. Superb! -
So what we're saying is: rename "General Bass Discussion" to "General Music Discussion" (which is pretty much what it is anyway), and keep "Off Topic" non-musical? Works for me. And like Skank said, it might help push some stuff into a more appropriate forum ("Bass Guitars" or "Repairs & Technical").
-
Maybe rename General Bass Discussion to General Discussion. (or something with a snappier title )

That's a good idea and a good compromise. It's not as if general music discussion is currently being inhibited by the sub-forum title. Might also push some of the gear and technique related stuff into the appropriate dedicated sub-forums. OT could then be re-specified as being for non-musical discussion. Might tidy up some of the cross-over stuff that slides into OT, e.g. band problems.
Yep. This could work too, and be less complicated than an extra forum.
-
I have a deep, deep yearning within my soul (...well, I may have overstated that, but you get the gist...) for a sub-forum that falls somewhere between "General Bass Discussion" and "Off Topic", called something like "General Music Discussion". A lot of what's in "General Bass Discussion" isn't anything to do with bass, but a lot to do with music. Couldn't "Off Topic" be reserved for stuff that's genuinely off-topic (completely non-music), and "General Bass Discussion" be reserved for stuff that's genuinely bass? Or does nobody care but me? Wouldn't be the first time in my life, I assure you.

Finding the key of a song you are covering?
BottomEndian replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
As someone with just enough musical theory knowledge to be dangerous, why does knowing the key matter?
It usually doesn't, but that never stops me doing it. I quite often transcribe new stuff I play, even though I know full well what's going on. It's good practice, and it gives me a strange, fuzzy, warm feeling inside. I'm quite visual when it comes to music, so all this stuff helps me get my head round new songs, chord progressions and basslines. It means I can think up stuff to play that I might not have done had I not figured out the key or transcribed it or whatever. -
Does he really think the words "spray can job" are going to help him sell this monstrosity?
