1. Patience, grasshoppers. I'm sure Alex will clear everything up when he gets back from his jaunt around Eastern Europe.
 2. Dig out a pick, turn up the grind and blast through "Red" by King Crimson. The triple-stopped chords at the start should clear out the shop so you can do what you want in privacy.
 3. Breakfast bump for pics added!
 4.
That's what's been wrong with my basses for all these years - incorrectly calibrated sound, because I can't find the holes! I wonder what on earth they mean? Couldn't possibly be making stuff up just to sound clever, could they? I might message them and ask for more details about these "sound calibration holes", how they work, and if the bass is supplied with all the necessary tools & calibration charts to, er, calibrate it.
Are they talking about the pickguard screw-holes? If it originally had an EB-2 style guard, there'd be "ONE TO THE FRONT AND ONE TO THE SIDE". I suppose (if you knew nowt about anything) you might think they were designed to have the stem of a tuning fork stuck in them to "calibrate" your sound.
 5.
Now that is a bargain rig!
Why aye, man. And it's huge. All stacked up, it's about the same height as me.
 6. Oh yeah, should have said: feel free to approach me with offers of trades. Don't get me wrong -- I'd prefer to sell, but I'm always interested in odd bits and bobs. Especially preamps, lightweight power amps, heads and pedals.
 7. Following the acquisition of a Barefaced Vintage, the old Peavey rig's gotta go. So, up for sale we have the following: Peavey Max 700 head: [s]£200 ono[/s] SOLD Peavey 410 TVX cab with variable tweeter @ 4 ohms: [s]£100 ono[/s] SOLD Peavey 115 BVX BW (that stands for Black Widow, BTW) cab @ 4 ohms: [s]£80 ono[/s] SOLD That's a whole lotta loudness for not much wonga. With both cabs running off the head, it's a huge black monolith of bottom end. It's got a really straight-forward, uncoloured sound, with punishing volume levels. All in well-used nick, 5 or 6 years old. Scuffed and scraped Tolex from a good few years of rehearsal and gigging, but no actual damage to head or cabs, and everything works perfectly. Any questions, fire away. Preferably collection from the Tyneside area, but I may be able to meet halfway over sensible distances, especially down Yorkshire way. Now for the shoddy pictures. The head: The 1x15: The 4x10: And the whole shebang: Here's the standard manufacturer spiel. I know the stuff about the head is bang on, but the specs of the cabs have changed a bit over the last decade or so, so they might be for a slightly different version. Either way, they're close to reality : Max 700 Head Punishingly loud top box design cranks out 700W @ 2 ohms, 475W @ 4 ohms, or 275W @ 8 ohms. Features a 3-band active EQ with shiftable midrange control, lively contour control, and -10dB pad switch. Has an active crossover with variable frequency and balanced controls; a buffered tuner send jack; footswitchable post-EQ effects loop; transformer balanced XLR jack with pre-/post-EQ send switch and ground lift; DDT power amp compression with defeat switch; and preamp out/power amp in jacks. Dimensions 23.5" W x 8.5" H x 13" D. Weight 52.5 lbs. 410 TVX cab 4 ohms. 350 Watts RMS continuous / 700 Watts program. Four 10" Sheffield® bass speakers. Front-ported enclosure. Horn-loaded tweeter w/ L-pad attenuator for tweeter and protection circuitry. Frequency response: 30 Hz to 15 kHz. One 1/4" phone jack input connection. Dimensions: 24.75" W x 19.25" D x 28.25" H. Weight: 97.5 lb. Rubber feet. 115 BVX BW cab 4 ohms. 400 Watts RMS continuous / 800 Watts program. One 15" Black Widow® 1502 speaker. Specially-ported enclosure. Frequency response: 30 Hz to 3.5 kHz. One 1/4" phone jack input connection. Dimensions: 22.75" W x 20.00" D x 27.50" H. Weight: 86 lbs. Metal feet.
 8.
Now BEFORE the usual suspects say "Use your ears", I'll quickly point out that I can't be on-stage next to my rig and standing at the back of the pub at the same time. What to do, what to do ...
Looper pedal. Get the band to jam out a little section they can loop, and then you can set the pedal looping your line with them while you wander around and tweak your sound for the best compromise between on-stage and back-of-the-pub awesomeness. Hell, with a looper pedal you can soundcheck everyone from the back of the room.
 9. It's all quite Joey Lawrence. As everyone's been saying, they're OK, but they don't speak to me about what it is you do. What irks me, especially in the last one, is the way he's Photoshopped you into a fairly dark outdoor setting, where the natural light appears to be trying to break through the clouds behind you. But then you see the obvious reflections/highlights from what look like whacking great studio softboxes either side of your singer and pretty much head-on to your bass, coming from behind the camera. The light just feels so wrong. You'd sit much better in a brighter setting. I'm being tremendously sexist, of course, in assuming that the girl at the front is the singer. She could be the thereminist for all I know.
 10. OK, here's another bit of startling info. Sorry it's all coming in fits and starts. I'm just posting stuff here when it comes to mind. Weighed the Vintage today (on the bathroom scales, so not completely accurate, but good enough): 56 lb. That's 25.4 kg. About the same weight as a Bergantino HS210 or a Schroeder 1212. Only a shade heavier than my Peavey Max 700 head.
 11.
I think there's a lot of mwah to be had with flats if the bass has 'it'.. whatever that is.
Could "it" be fingerboard material? My VMJ with TIs has a fair bit of mwah down the bottom, and that's an ebonol board. Maybe something softer like rosewood might damp down the mwah. Pure conjecture, y'knaa. I'm pretty clueless on this.
 12.
Actually, he did mention something back here about a trip round Europe, so that might be it. In which case he might not be back for another week yet. S.P.
Ah, of course. But I can't see Alex staying away from BC, even if he is staring at boobs and firing automatic weapons in Eastern Europe.
 13.
Alex, how come the speakers aren't dead centre?
From two months back (!):
They're in a straight line but offset to smooth the response out front.
Not sure how it does that, but it probably is something to do with internal resonances, although it might also be to offset the drivers against the ports. Dunno. Hope Alex is OK -- he'll surely be along soon to explain all in his own inimitable, tech-heavy way!
 14.
Good to see it 'naked' though I feel it looks vunerable like that. Personally, I'm not a fan of cloth grills except for original vintage gear. More for practical protection than cosmetics. Maybe Alex will offer a non-vintage metal grill as an option ...or am I completely missing the point and should stick to knitting and looking after kittens?
I originally approached Alex about a Vintage with a metal grill. He said it was certainly possible as a custom option, and I think he's repeated that somewhere on BC, but it changes the basic construction of the cab so it would have been an even longer wait and even more money that I shouldn't be spending anyway. FWIW, the cloth seems really strong. You'd have to put some serious effort into it to break through and knack the cones. Thing is, if you did tear the cloth, you could just get new cloth put on the frame. Just to be on the safe side though, I'm going to get a padded cover made.
 15. Pictures, anyone? It's so big I had to use a wide-angle lens to get it all in shot, so apologies for the distortion. Here's the Vintage with my VMJ for scale (we all know how big a Jazz is, right?): Here it is unclothed (and by 'eck, I had to work to get that grill off): And this is how big it sounds:
 16.
I pretty much do the same. I find singing the bass line in your head does not give you the restriction that working one out on the bass does. Its easy to fall into the trap of following the same patterns or routes when writing on a bass. Singing it in your head is a lot more free flowing. It just means it might be a bit harder to transpose when you do try it on the bass but its worth it in the end.
+1. I'm a much better singer than I am a bassist, so I can make life really difficult for myself sometimes. Not quite the same thing... at all... but it's kind of related: I've read somewhere that Johnny Marr used to come up with the complex, swirling guitar lines for The Smiths by tracking a basic rhythm guitar part with the bass and drums, and then listening to it on headphones really, really, REALLY loud so it was all distorted. At that volume, he heard all sorts of bizarre overtones that created little melodies over the top of the music, and those are the lines he played on guitar. Bonkers. And I bet he had an absolute swine of a time transferring them onto guitar.
 17.
Maybe I'm being dumb, but why is that a typo? There's only one of her.
The article was about Christian McBride, with no other mention of Duffy, or anyone called Duffy.
 18.
FWIW BGM is still the best all round bass mag available to us IMO. (How many abbreviations?)
I think you mean: FWIW BGM FTW IMO
 19.
Tech 21 now do a "Classic Relic" version of the original SansAmp, complete with battle-scarred, stomped-on-with-hobnail-boots appearance. Now I can understand relic'ed basses - the audience sees you playing what appears to be a vintage instrument - but has an audience ever stared at your pedals? Absolutely ludicrous. Where will it end? Relic'ed plectrums (sorry plectra) and guitar straps, relic'ed cables ..... Oh, and its a cool £275 to buy at Thomann http://www.thomann.de/gb/tech_21_sansamp_classic.htm
This is surely going to lead to a flood of original, f***ed-up SansAmps cropping up on eBay, masquerading as brand-new relics, commanding stupid prices. Silly, silly, silly.
 20. Isn't it against eBay T&Cs to demand that the buyer cover PayPal fees? Can't see the listing lasting if eBay see it.
 21.
Any folks here use Avatar cabs? I see theres a dealer in the netherlands, but can't find any info about shipping over here. The 4x10 neo looks lovely with the different colours
Don't have one myself, but I looked into it a few months back, and a mate's got one of their 2x12s. Lovely cabs, and reasonably light, but the Dutch dealer is the closest to the UK. With exchange rates as they are (or at least were back in January), it's a seriously expensive option -- literally more than double the US list prices, although I notice the Dutch website seems to have removed their prices at the moment. If you're set on an Avatar, it might be an idea to sit tight until the world economy settles down a touch. So, er... 2015? [plug] Alternatively, get a Barefaced. [/plug]
 22.
Hell aye!
+1
 23.
1) BGM don't pay me for writing for the magazine
Then I, for one, doubly thank you for your series of articles. To share your musical insight for free is only to be applauded. I only wish you wouldn't "shed". It makes you sound like a reptile sloughing off a layer of skin. And that's merely friendly banter, not a personal dig.

Insane, but very useful, and only just down the road from me (Corbridge). How come I've never heard of this place before?
 25.
Jake's in High Spen is one of the few in the UK to stock Trabens.
