I played a P-Bass special 4 string in the guitar shop at lunch, it played lovely but it was sunburst.
Shouldn't that be "it played lovely AND it was sunburst"?
It'll be touch and go - I've just measured one of mine at 47mm on the nail. There's a little bit of give in the foam, so you'll probably be OK, but you didn't get that from me
Thanks for that. It sounds tight. Looks like I'll have to measure my actual beast tonight, to see if it's up to proper spec. Anybody got any suggestions for a wider hanger if it won't fit?

With another baby Endian on the way, space is getting tight in the house. I'm thinking I might need to hang my basses on the wall to free up some floor. So I've been looking at the Hercules GSP38WB hanger, which seems to be well respected. Trouble is, I've got this beast of a 5-stringer with a wide neck: 47 mm at the nut. Can someone with a GSP38WB hanger please measure the maximum neck width you can fit in it? Or if someone knows of a better hanger option, let me know. Ta!
Just tried out a Squier Standard P-Bass Special V and was hugely impressed for the price. Obviously the pickups could be upgraded, but the string spacing and neck were really nice. Have been on the lookout for a fiver but have been changing my mind over whether to splash out on a higher end bass (Thumb 5, most likely). However, it now looks like I might actually buy a Fender-style bass! Anyone else tried one of these? Cheers-
Didn't even know it existed! It's not on Squier's website, so I guess it's a discontinued model. If you liked it for the price, snap it up -- it probably won't be there much longer!
I have a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass and its an amazing bass for the money. It feels like it should cost double what it does, the quality is amazing imo
I concur wholeheartedly. I've had my VMJ fretless for two days, and it's fast becoming my go-to bass. Just lovely.
I wouldn't worry about it... original Zemaitis guitars (not the Greco licenced copies that only cost a thousand quid or so) are far out of reach for most of us mortals... we're talking tens of thousands of pounds.
Ah, right. They're "hang on the wall, don't dare to play" jobs. Doesn't matter what they sound like! -
150? your very lucky then is the vintage modidfied better than the classic? do both come in pbass and jazz?
Behold! The VM range: http://www.squierguitars.com/products/sear...emodifiedseries And the Classic Vibe series: http://www.squierguitars.com/products/sear...assicvibeseries P and J in each range, but they're just... different. No "better" or "worse". If you're coming from guitar, you might be more comfortable with the Jazz neck: slimmer all round than the P, with a tighter string spacing down by the nut.
Bump - excellent price compared to ebay Almost worth buying to try a defret
Ta for the early bumperoo! I forgot to say in the OP... it plays really quite nicely. The neck's nice and chunky, kind of like a 5-string P, with a satiny finish to the back of the neck. And I thought about a defret myself, but I decided to test my fretless legs on a 4-string.

I've got a VMJ fretless incoming and I haven't played this for... well, it must be about nine months. The Ibanez has usurped it completely, so it's time to let it go. Maple neck, rosewood fretboard, 24 frets, 34" scale. The body's... wood. I can tell you that much. Most of Wesley's basses are alder, but I can't guarantee that this one is. The finish is an absolute swine to photograph, but it's really quite lovely in the flesh. A sort of metallic-y deep blue, with a high-gloss finish. Only one tiny scratch I can find (see pic) just behind the bridge. Passive pups, passive volume / volume / tone as usual. No crackles or pops from the pots when I gave it a quick blast just now. It'd benefit from a new set of strings. I'm not sure what brand or gauge the current set are, it's been so long since I used this bass. I hesitate to say it sounds like any particular type of bass, but the pup placement leads it to sound a bit Jazz-ish. Neck pup = thud. Bridge pup = thwad. No real problems with this bass. The neck's nice and straight, and I've never had a problem with intonation. The action's not particularly low at the moment, but I've always played this hard with a pick, and there's no reason you couldn't get the action down a fair way if you play lighter. It's got a few rough fret edges, but nothing actively sharp. The nut seems to have been fitted by a blind, crack-addled ape with no hands, so it's wider than the neck, but it does the job. Just don't slide down to the nut, or you'll be kissing bits of flesh goodbye. Again, it's nothing a little attention with a file couldn't sort out. See the pics for the full glory of the nut. This could be a useful beginner's 5-string (it was for me!), or a handy beater for someone already used to a 5. I'm looking for £50, plus delivery at cost (I use Fastway, so that's £4.54 locally, £7.99 if you live in a Fastway area, or £10.29 for everyone else in UK mainland), or you can pick it up from Hexham/Corbridge in Northumberland. Alternatively, I'm always on the lookout for interesting pedals, so if you've got one to trade, let me know. Any kind of pedal -- I'm not fussy. Sorry, no case, but it'll be well packaged for whatever journey it makes.
I think you are wrong about the custard: they'd only use that if it was Bird's Eye Maple....
Zing! No need to get your coat. I've already set fire to it and poured custard through the sleeves. It's worth twice as much now. -
Stick a precision neck on it and you could have the best of both worlds...Jazz sound, Precision feel.
This is definitely an idea worth toying with. In fact, I've got a fretless Mighty Mite P neck that was destined for my Hondo. Might wait and see now...

Well, I pulled the trigger on a VMJ fretless from Reverb. £197 to my door. If you see it up on here in a week or two, you'll know the Jazz neck experiment didn't work for me... Just hope it's not a complete dog of a bass. That's the problem with these cheap internet offers.
Actually now you mention it the 'n' did look a bit sideways. I was told the bass had 'apparently' been the one that recorded the song 'Bercadette' by the Fower Terps.
Might it also have been used on their 1969 song, "What is a Mac"?
Ageed - it just looks like graffitti to me and if people think it makes the bass worth more I take the opposite view. Having said that, I always kind of regret turning down a pre-CBS Precision offered by a bloke in a pub in Benwell for 150 quid on the basis some twit had carved the word 'Funk' in the heel of the neck.
Benwell? You sure that was an "n" in Funk?

Hats off to him for at least owning up to the fact it's a Squier, after he's gone to the effort of replacing the decals. The custard seems to have crept into the neck joint too. Do you think it might improve sustain? -
Ladies and gentlement, I submit to you the worst relic job I've ever seen. Custard appears to have been involved in the process.

All interesting so far. Thanks, guys. One of the Jazzes I've noodled on and had problems with is the Aerodyne. Anyone know if the Aerodyne's unusually narrow or strangely profiled? I can't find any helpful info on the Fender site -- it just says it's a "C" shape, as opposed to the "Modern C" shape of the American Standard or the "Thin C" shape of the Geddy.
