Need some help please Spectorites - What do you guys do for d-tuners on the newer (2021+) Spector Euro’s? I’ve recently bought an RST and was thinking about the Hipshot GB7 detuner/xtender but I think the peg (shaft bit), is thicker on my Spector tuner, and also the tuner heads are different patterns - are they interchangeable as again they look different? The tuners are Gotoh’s on my RST. TIA.

I may stand corrected but to my knowledge the tuners are interchangeable. The shaft on the GB7 has 11mm diameter but comes with a bushing that has 14mm diameter, in theory that should be a drop in replacement but probably the only way to be 100% sure is to nuke the site from orbit  to take of the peg and measure the hole diameter in the headstock.

Quick Q, is the RST 4 string the lightest Spector? I see Bass Bros have one at 6.4lbs and that weight is very appealing. Thing is i think i prefer the P/J configuration...i'm likely to be shopping for something ideally under 7.5lbs over the coming weeks post holidays.

To my knowledge, yes, they are. There might have been a few US Spectors in the past labelled as "Helium" with light woods and hardware but they are few and far between so for the Euro line the RSTs are the lightest.

Rare, but due to retailers and manufacturers finding green the hardest colour to shift. Sad, as I think it can look great, as it does for these two, but guitarists (of all string numbers) are a very conservative lot, with black, white and sunburst outselling everything else.

Yes l seem to remember this period was the only one when emerald green was offered in the Euro line, and maybe slower sales were the reason not ever bringing it back apart from some artist one offs.

  5. The one that got away….. and finally back. A 2000 pre LX Euro 5 in rare emerald green color that I had imported from the USA in 2006 and sold ohh so foolishly in 2009. I was quitting playing bass but soon realized I’d better off mentally if I keep playing music anyways. Having kept a good correspondence with the owner and then one after him I was able to finally buy her back last weekend. (With both previous owners being present and happy as things coming full circle- both of them play Spectors btw 😀

A surreal experience indeed to say the least and it’s as great a bass as I remembered and even more so.

But enough of this rambling let’s have some pics. The one with the dragons I took in 2008ish and the others are current.

A happy fellow I am for sure

  6. In the mid 2010s I had been long dreaming about a US Spector NS-5XL, using Specor Euro5s for a good ten years at that point. There was a particular one was put up for sale by its original owner in 2015 or so but was sold to someone else in Germany.
The original owner is also a german gent and before the bass was sold to him the shop selling it had it featured in a german magazine, hence the great quality pics. Some of these were the locking picture on my phone for years already, so I was looking at it daily. I pretty much played Euro 5s exclusively both live and studio so I knew the design and the sound worked for me like nothing else and during the years a NS-5XL became my holy grail. After all the opportunity came as the second owner put it up for sale making me jumping in the car…I made a 2 days round trip to Germany and bought it in 2017. My main recording bass ever since, I use it a lot for practice, live not so much, only now and then as my other Spectors do the job just as fine but they are lighter.

All in all it’s my dream bass and not only that but managed to remain my No.1 long after the honeymoon period was over (or rather, it is still going on 🥰 )

  8. I personally would go for a clear plate that is the exact replica of the existing pickguard ( I have a jazz with clear pg and love it the way it is, pic below for reference)

Then I would choose an inverse self adhesive tape / paper/ whatever it is called  (where the color / design / motif is on the adhesive side) that I would cut to a shape that looks cool and covers the cavity and put that to the underside of the guard facing outward so it blocks the view of the cavity.

    Very nice!

Euro ltd order runs are possible with a minimum order of approx 25 pieces. That's how I organised the Euro X basses last year...

Started to think what could I do with 25 Spector Euros. Some colour selection is permitted within the order, right? 😄 😄

Anyway, here are videos of these limited editions for what it's worth. As much as I haven't really liked the RST's sound with the Aguilars these are quite great sounding with the Spector DNA intact.

The RST I had which was the lightest bass ever had no neck dive.

Thank you for the information, they then were able to strike a balance between light body and light neck, something that wasn’t quite as successful with the weight relived Classic 5 I have (which I love nevertheless)

edit: yours was a four or five string model?

  11. I have to love how the Japaneese always getting some extra limited run / one off Czech Spectors like this one

     Bought 3 for myself too!

I'm also getting at least one set from him once I get around ordering, the Aguilar OBP will be replaced by it in the white Euro 435.

  13. @kjfitzy I own and use a SR5006 for about 10 years, which is the six string version of the 5005. It is the most comfortable and ergonomic six string bass I ever had and sounds great, too. It weights in between 9 and 10 lbs which was never an issue for me as it is so ideally shaped to match my preference in ergonomics both playing stand up or seated. (I tend to "wear" the bass in the same position stand up as seated, meaning relaitvely high and it balances perfectly without needing either hand to hold it in place) I also have an earlier iteration of it from the SR Prestige line, called SR3006 which is basically the same model without the wengé top and back and I think the 5 version of it, the SR3005 could be what @thebrig referred to as these were produced in the 2000's and are quite a bit lighter than the SR5000/5/6 basses in my experience.

These are not chambered to my knowledge.

edit: I know your are looking at the 5005, all the above is my experience with the six string version and based on that, the 5005 is very highly recommended, you'll get a bass that is extremely well made, sounds great and very well designed.

Here's the two sixers in question

  14. FWIW:

Mayones produced Fame basses for at least one (or more) German retailers (Music Store in Köln / Cologne). The neck joint is basically the same as in the OP, just google Fame bass.

I'm by no means very up to date with the Mayones offerings or what they produced in the past under the Mayones brand name  but by that similarity I assume that this bass was made in the same workshop and might be an one off bearing the M logo. (just because I can't recall seeing a Mayones branded product that was so much similar to a Spector but then again I can be wrong 🙂

I personally think that it is a legit Mayones, maybe a one-off but for that kind of price it certainly worths a try.

Aesthetically I feel that the red one should be in the middle flanked by the two white ones, moving the 3rd from the right one space further to the right.

    Like so?

  16. I have been thinking a while to install a set of wall hangers and keep my basses there instead of the rack stands.
Not that I thought they are better or such but I have a suitable ( = empty) wall in my home office and this way I can see them in their full beauty.

Ordered a dozen or so hangers from Th, put them on a board that was lying around since the last garden remodelling and installed them on the wall.

There's going to be another on the wall facing this, albeit only for 4 basses.

I'll paint it as I just kept the wood as it is since I wasn't sure if I get every measurements and placements right (both the hangers and on the wall) so I can cover extra holes and such later with the stain+ clear coat.

But seems like first time is the charm and everything fits and placed just the way it's logiacal and comfortable.

Anyway, I put my Spectors there and also realized I never took a group shot of them so here they are 😉 🙂

  17. I don't seem to remember trying a 4 string Sadowsky but I owned and used a 5 string Metro and a NY5.

The Metro was an early MV5, under  M1000 serial. It had some of the best feeling neck I ever tried on a 5 string bass, I could play for hours both thru gigs or practice.

19mm spacing at the bridge. It sounded great with the Sadowksy hum cancelling pickups and was very light, too.

I let it go because my other basses at the time were (and still are) Spector 5 string NS basses with a much tighter specing and they fit sound and playing -wise better to my preferences. Still think about getting a Japaneese Metro 5 string PJ from time to time though as they had a great impression on me.

  18. Does going from 5 to 4 but with BEAD tuning count? 🙂

Normally I use 5 string basses for practice, gigs and recording, too,  but in one of the originals band I play in I switched to this wonderful Spector 35" 4 string PJ.

The reason was partially so I could justify buying it. No, it was just I fancied a change, never used the G string in that gig and the 35" is great for drop A tuning, too.

35" Spector Euro 4 strings are very rare, having one in the classic 80's white is impossible almost (never seen a white apart from mine which was a custom order of Bass Direct )

Whenever I'm traveling around the fretboard I have always seem to use the B string as a reference point (and it makes a great thumb rest, too 🙂 )so it was a perfect switch without problems. It needs to be said however that I haven't made a permament switch to 4 string basses or even it wasn't a switch really at all as I keep using by 5 string basses for other gigs and mainly pratice and record with those still.

Other than that I got to use a regular 4 string bass last year when I was subbing for an Iron Maiden tribute band. That was a good excuse to use one of my other Spector, a 1977 limited edition which otherwise sadly hasn't seen that much use for the reasons above.

That colour looks incredible with the gold hardware. What colour is it?

This bass orginially had a natural finish (see below) , the pink / magenta color is the result of a refinish that I had done. It is a pre-LX Euro5, made in the early 2000's with full maple wings.
